Peter, it's the torque from turning the pencil in the sharpener, & not having the pencil straight in the sharpener that causes breakage like you had. Try holding the pencil firmly in your non dominant hand, and the sharpener in your dominant hand, & turning the sharpener, not the pencil.

Broken pencil leads fall into the same category as computers that one day just stop working. There are invisible aliens who are responsible for all of these. Their intent is to make humans frequently frustrated. One day, we will all go mad and then they will make their move and simply take from under our noses all of our most prized possession: the doughnuts.

Peter I forgot to complement you on your free-flowing organic style and you're absolutely right when you say the first mark is the hardest when you stare at a blank sheet for minute after minute. You're an inspiration to all & I too used to love doodling semi abstract stuff with the HB pencil which was our schools standard. We also loved creating mini flip animations on the corners of all our books by seeing the indent from the previous image. - just line drawings of cars jumping over ramps and colliding, heads bulging eyes and exploding etc . Wish I had those old school books now. The nostalgia. Anyways, keep creating.

Talking about doodling in school, it was getting towards the end of the school year and barely anyone brought anything but a pen and we'd sit around and just chat for a good few hours each day. One day I brought a notepad with me to doodle and my friends wanted to doodle too but I didn't want to tear out a page so we all sat around and shared one A4 space and drew our own things, every so often rotating the page and doing a little modifications of each others doodles and just having fun with it. I kept that one page, I still have it 3 years later, it's a great memory I have and I'm glad it's one I could keep.

I laughed so much at your efforts to sharpen a cheap pencil. When I was at school I gave up pencil sharpeners for life! My father could see my predicament. He sharpened all my pencils all the way through school using a pen knife or other very sharp blade. Half a century (actually longer) later I still use a knife on pencils to get a really long graphite you can lie on its side to shade with. Thanks for all your delightful videos - I am an avid fan!

Peter, I sent you an email some months ago, but I am not sure if you got it. So, I hope you read this comment. You always talk about not needing expensive or fancy art supplies to draw. I believe that is true, so i have a suggestion. A friend of mine and I like to draw. She is especially hood at watercolor, however i cannot afford great watercolor supplies. So, instead, I started painting/drawing with food coloring, or food dye. You know, that comes in the little drip squeeze bottles. A box will typically come with the primary colors. I mix them and dilute them in water. I would really enjoy watching you try this too.

In regards to the pencil lead breaking when it's sharpened. I prefer to sharpen all of my pencils with a knife, but obviously knives are not allowed in school. If you have to use a pencil sharpener, make sure to not over sharpen the pencil, especially at the start - just take it out when it's sharp "enough", you're not trying to stab a person. Pencil lead is very brittle since it is made of graphite and clay. Try not to drop the pencil or hit it against things, this may break the lead inside, and make sure to hold the pencil straight (horizontally) when sharpening. Sharpening with a small knife is still the best way to go if you need to use a non-mechanical pencil though. (College ruled paper is always superior. I've filled in a bunch of tests with a B pencil before and they worked fine, I guess there's a range for the scanner to detect them.)

Here in Argentina schools usually ask for a special kind of notebooks too, they are called "papel araña" (lit. spider paper) and they have a papel cover with nilon over it that forms a spiderweb texture (and some of them even have little spiders and flies too). I have absolutely no idea why they ask for those but everytime I see them I remember my days in elementary c': As always, your videos are super fun to watch and I love your voice lots!

Hi Peter. I eventually found out, during my Illustration course that HB is the middle meeting point between H=Hard & B=Black so the 2H, 3H etc has more graphite/lighter and 2B, 3B etc has more lead and, as you know, is darker and great for contrast. I personally use between 4H through to 9B even just every 2nd or 3rd pencil between that range is good. Watercolour pencils are great in the grey range and wet brushes to pull the dark 9B pigment away and use a water spray bottle on fine mist really close to some dark pigment again gives great results. Just to finish off I want to tell you about my favourite material, which you've probably heard of; scraper-board or scraper-card which comes in about A2 sheets and has a fine black semi-matt finish and you use hand held scalpels to etch away the surface to reveal the white underneath. I prefer number 11 scalpel blades and you can stipple, hatch and the best part is you can colour the white lines with a fine watercolour as it won't show up on the black if you go out of your etched edge. I hope I'm making sense. Its a fantastic medium and a bit pricey at AUS$20 a sheet but well worth the effects and experimental fun that it can yield. Hi from Australia.

A lot of times the lead within the pencil already begins to fracture from dropping or getting bumped around. When you sharpen it, it will eventually release the piece that is broken inside the pencil chamber(?) I'm not saying how it always happens, but I just recommend trying to keep care of your pencils :)

Just a few fun facts for anyone who didn't know and was curious; HB pencils are used specifically for standardized tests because anything harder (H, 2H, ...) would be too hard to erase (in case you needed to change an answer) and anything blacker (B, 2B, ...) would smudge very easily, which would may also end up showing as a wrong answer (HB is the happy middle); #2 and HB mean the same thing and are the same hardness (as he stated in the video), and just use a different labeling system (the Hs, Bs, HB, and F being one and #s being the other, which are equivalent and mean the same thing by a different name); and one reason the wooden pencils used in school break so easily is because the lead inside is already broken somewhere, the lead isn't centered in the wood casing, and/or the graphite isn't glued in properly, which means you'll probably sharpen the pencil until it's half gone just to be able to use it without the lead falling out. I would suggest using decent pencils (when you can) and TRY NOT TO DROP THEM (since graphite is super fragile and will break if you so much as look at the wrong way). The last part also applies to colored pencils, so take care of your pencils and hopefully they last a while. Hope this helped someone.

You can avoid the lead comming out by sharpening your penicil with a knife. Throw out the sharpener and use a box knife or a kraft knife. With just a little practice you can make it really sharp, of if you need (maybe for shading) a more shisseled point.

To help with the pencil sharpening issue, try to not drop them because when you do the lead inside breaks causing those little pieces when you’re sharpening

If you want the lead in your pencils not to break the trick is not to drop the pencil on a hard surface, like the floor.

Peter! I was told by an art teacher who had us make our own sketchbooks that the reason we couldn't use spiral bound sketchbooks was because when stacked, they get all messy and caught in each other sometimes. I assume that's the reason composition notebooks are preferred?

That's actually one of the first decent reasons I've heard. I don't like it because it doesn't effect me at all, the notebook stacking, but it makes sense.

Broken pencil leads is because of shipping, those things get tiny cracks and break off when you apply light pressure. Its the same if you drop a pencil, its gonna frustrate you with the loose leads. I recommend pure graphite pencils if you want to live with a tiny worry less.

I like pencils because they can easily shade just by pressing harder of softer

I had problems with focusing or caring in school my entire life. I would daydream and literally draw in the middle of every class. It got to the point where I got real good and when I would get caught my teacher would rip every drawing in my notebook and throw them in a garbage.
