I just attended a sketching class last night and the instructor was trying to describe what you just demonstrated. Thank you for providing this detailed walk-through. This helps a great deal.

I think I sort of understand this now!! I used to be so confused by measuring & stuff, but seeing it in first person and how you also measure your drawing makes a lot more sense to me. Thank you!

I'm always sharing this with my beginner HS drawing student but this is the first video I have found that helps them see first person. Thanks for taking the time to make and post this!

I started Drawing and Comp 2 this week. It's been years since I took 1. The teacher said something along the lines of everyone remembering how to draw by sighting from Drawing and Comp 1. I was like, Uuuuuhhhh. So, thank you for posting this! It's pretty common sense once I see it. I've been drawing for years and never used this technique. I'm sure my teacher will expect to see me using it so this is helpful! P.S. I could swear I was listening to Ryan Reynolds here. Deadpool.

have you made a video on more complex measuring, like measuring things that sit backwards and have angles ?... something that would make you measure more than just straight across
@Hyukfied7 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I just learned this in drawing class but I couldn't get what the professor mean. His teaching method is not compatible with the way I learn. I thought we just measure with the pencil and draw exactly that on the paper but it seems I was wrong. hahaa I get it now! Thank you again!

You should have mentioned that you need to close one eye while you are holding your arm out to measure but other than that this is a helpful video
@BluemazeWesley4 жыл бұрын
Great video. I do think that it’s easier to measure across the vertical access of the gourd and not parallel to the ground. It would emphasize the angle of the gourd based on the vertical access and what would be a perpendicular reference.

Should a beginner always take a vertical as well as horizontal sighting?
@artwhat..2 жыл бұрын
I liked the way you explain that, so the key I guess is to just sketch a shape first,thanks.. I also realized if I multiply my measurements, I can make a ghord as big as a house..ha..

I'm self-taught on drawing and learned sighting way after I started drawing. Although I did learn of the technique, I never really incorporated it into my technique and now that I'm taking an actual drawing course, I had some questions about sighting that your video helped clarify. Thank you so much!

@ CHRIS TRINER Yes sighting with a pencil is easy when the measurements are either 1/2, 1/3, 1/4. But what about if its a different fraction. How do you work this out accurately on pencil? it’s so hard. Any tips?

This makes no sense to me. I have to make a proportion box using ratios and I have no idea how people come up with the numbers to get that ratio.
