Sighting, Measuring, Mapping: MCAD Drawing 101

I've made still lives before and used a piece of paper to help me imagine how the objects will look, but I've never tried to quickly draft and map while drawing a still life. The whole process is so cool and the outcome is outstanding!

Yeah this is way too much effort for the result, plus the paper ends up way too dirty. I can get a way better result from eyeballing than all this stuff. Anyone who has to go through all of this is quite an inefficient artist.

It seems very unnatural too? I've heard quite a few instructors say that it's best to learn with your eyes and what you see, rather than using excessive tools. You might not get the best results, but you learn more from doing so. Can't speak from everyone, but that's what I've learned personally. This method just seems too technical.

@@ke9n it’s for practice not final drawings :^) working like this just builds one’s visual library to eventually be able to create these shapes and forms without as many guidelines. It as a portfolio piece applies mostly to fine arts and college applications where they like to look at what the artist is looking for when drawing and how they learn how to draw the objects. The cleanliness of a final piece is arbitrary as long as there’s enough definition in the lines. Certain papers also rub charcoal away better than others. Plus, this is a video from an art school?? Where the artists are learning???? Lastly, different artists have different processes. Saying that someone who works like this is “inefficient” is ridiculous. Did you know that a lot of Renaissance artists worked with sighting and measuring? I recommend you look at some Renaissance sketches. They’re quite messy as well. I can’t imagine how just eyeballing would work well if you haven’t done any sort of sighting and measuring in the past..
