EAST STAFFORDSHIRE PARISH #4: DRAYCOTT IN THE CLAY
For the second time on the channel we hit a place with the name Draycott. Last time out we were in Derbyshire for Draycott and Church Wilne. This time, it’s Draycott in the Clay
In much the same way as the former though, Draycott means “Dry cote” or dry land, in what would otherwise have been a wet, marshy area once upon a time
Commonly known just as Draycott, The village is located midway between Uttoxeter, which is 7 and a half miles to the West, and Burton Upon Trent which is 7 and half to the East.
The nearest railway station is at Uttoxeter, however Draycott used to have a station within its parish boundaries. That was Sudbury station, and although its now gone, the signal box is still in use
The village is dominated by the A515 which runs through the village. To the south of the village is The National Forest and to the North is a traction engine park
It’s a small village, and it doesn’t have much, but it can still boast two churches, a village shop and post office, two pubs, one of which stands next to a farm shop, a school and a play area
It also has a massive village hall which was an old school, and on the A515 there’s a lovely old drinking fountain, with an inscription. Not bad for a village which most people just drive through
