Wow you are right! For me Oscar was not only the best brazilian player ever, Oscar was the best international player of all times. Oscar is the all time scoring leader with over more the 45,000 points thats more than the Jabbar scoring record. I am from Puerto Rico and i loved watching Oscar scoring 40 points to our team when we played against Brazil. Also Marcel De Souza was great to. I remember the 1987 team with Oscar, Souza , Andrade, Vitalino and Pipoca Vianna. Was a great team.

I wish Oscar would've accepted 1 of the nba's offers. Would've like to see him compete for the scoring title w/MJ. I remember watching Pippen try to check him in the 92 olympics. Schmidt was impossible to guard but the Dream Team was too talented from top to bottom.
@sctmprn5 жыл бұрын
Yeh; Oscar was one of the most incredible pure scorers/shooters in the history of the game. No defensive phase, but when he was in the mood (practically always) and could see the rim, there was nothing that could stop him. He was just shooting and scoring, from every position and in all the possible/needed ways.

Oscar avaraged 34,6 pts in 11 seasons in Italy. He's the all time scoring leader in Olympics, with a 28.8 pts average in 5 olympics. In Seoul, 88, he scored 42.3 pts per game. Nobody scored more points than him in the history of the game: 49,703 pts. You can even say that Petrovic was better, but not by the numbers. Oscar never played in the NBA cause if he did he he would not be able to play for Brazil national team.

I was in my sophomore year in high school and I remember I was pissed off because I was in the afternoon shift (2pm - 7pm) so I was unable to watch the game on TV (at 6pm). And while I was taking the bus home after school, someone told me Drazen had scored 47 points in regulation. I rushed home to see the overtime (x2 if I recall correctly) and I watched him make history. Gentile also scored 31 I think.
@joevald3214 жыл бұрын
you are right friend. If you see the european players they play the old school basketball style. They have the teams spirit making the game more colectible. In the 80 when Magic, Bird and Jordan era use to played like euro players using the logic of the game with fundamentals. I think todays NBA is more marketing than real basketballl fundamentals. But you are right in every thing.

For your information Krešimir Čosić in April 1972 at the 1972 NBA Draft he was picked by Portland Trail Blazers as the number 1 pick in the 10th round.The following year at the 1973 NBA Draft he was picked by Los Angeles Lakers as the pick number 15 in the 5th.He was the first foreign player to earn All-American honors from the United Press International, garnering them in 1972 and 1973. Just Google...
@andylilla12 жыл бұрын
@bluzercic True, Sabonis arrived in the NBA at age 32, but he wasn't allowed to go earlier because of USSR's policy of not letting their best players go play abroad, @NBAfan096 I'm pretty sure Fernando Martin was drafted in 1985, one year before Sabonis, and if I'm not wrong also Dino Meneghin was chosen by the Hawks in the early 70s, so Sabonis was not the first European player to be drafted.
@andylilla12 жыл бұрын
Just checked on Hoopedia to be sure: Meneghin was drafted by the hawks in 1970 (11th round). Also, I don't know if Cosic counts since he went to BYU which obviously gave him a better chance of being scouted and drafted by an NBA team, but anyway Meneghin came 2 years earlier so I guess it doesn't matter

Oscar Schmidt was unstoppable against the great USA teams. Even though they'd lose by like 1000 points, they still couldn't stop him, his jumper was wet. Drazen was unconscious from way down town when he got his shine on in the L. He played for the garbage Nets with their ugly uniforms though. Both are legendary in my book as a basketball fan

Daniel, I don´t know who's better. Maybe you are right and Petrovic was better, but wasn't because Schmidt never played in NBA. Oscar was drafted once and refused to play. On 80's NBA players were forbidden to play on international level.

HAHA, I'm actually glad you had the audacity to insult me and start an argument because you have absolutely nothing on me. No-one in their right mind would say either of these players hold a candle to current or past nba greats. That's why kobe and lebron are internationally renowned as the best in the world where as Michael jordan is without question the greatest player to ever play the game. Shaq was also the most dominant center ever, and his free throw shooting wasn't much worse than them

That's way harsh! You come off as racist to me. Besides, the Europeans get plenty of playing time nowadays. Nowitzki just won the MVP award last year. Kukoc wasn't as great as you think, I'd say. If he had played better defense, he might have gotten more playing time. As for Schmidt, it's impossible to know how he would've played if he had joined the NBA. All we can do is speculate.
@yowassupimben16 жыл бұрын
To be honest, watching this, the defense was pathetic, they're so unathletic, they have no handles, heck, they can't even shoot as well as half the nba players. I mean look at all the Free Throws they missed. They would have gotten murdered in the nba. These guys should not be mentioned with any of the current or past nba Greats. Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Michael Jordan, Shaq, any of those guys could have scored 100 points if they wanted to in a weak-ass game like this.
@swissdragon1516 жыл бұрын
so have you ever heard of a man called larry bird? well he was the slowest, most unathletic guy...but oddly he played in the NBA aaand was very sucessful from what i heard, isnt he top 50 players of all time? hmmm he kinda reminds me of oscar, but im sure oscar was to slow and too unathletic to play in the NBA...my point is that you dont know how he wouldve turned out, neither do i, but let me tell you, a guy that scored 49703 career points in the FIBA league is pretty good.. have a good day sir
