Appreciate everyone explaining that you don’t have to push the clutch in all the way when moving. I just started into the diesel tech world and my company requires me to drive the big rigs into the shop myself and cascadias are the only manual truck they have rn and to this day up until now I couldn’t shift and was too scared to work on these year model trucks for fear that I might damage the clutch and down a truck. Thank you. I am a CDL Class A Driver for almost 6 years but have been driving Automatic & 6 Speed manual which is completely different from 10 speed. Drivers talk of double clutching but never explained to me as simple as you did & even shifting the Gear without using the clutch which according to you will come after driving for quite some time. Now i know what double clutching is. Its engaging the clutch twice once to switch to the nuetral & the second to switch the higher or lower Gear. Thanks. Some of the viewers have commented to put on Pants but I dont care as long as its comfortable to you. Wearing a pant will not make a new driver know better but the way you make others understand better is more important. Thank you once again.

I watched another video and the guy said you shouldn't push the clutch down all the way when double clutching. You only have to press the clutch in slightly you''l feel the slop of the pedal go away and that's all you really need to push. The reason is if you press it too far you can possibly engage the clutch brake and destroy the transmission. You only bottom out the clutch at a complete stop going from neutral to a gear.
@trentcooper88948 жыл бұрын
Don't push it all the way to the floor rigs have a transmission brake and you won't be able to shift also when down shifting get your rig at 1100 rpm slightly hit the clutch put it in nutrual then punch to get it up 1600rpms then grab a gear

@Garrison6410 жыл бұрын
You don't push in the clutch to rev for your downshift. Having the clutch in at that point is a common mistake of students in trucking schools. Once the clutch is in revving the engine accomplishes nothing because you just created a disconnect between the engine and the transmission. The whole point is to bring up the speed of the entire assembly not just the engine. So the correct way is to Press the clutch and move the shift lever to neutral. Let out on the clutch and rev the engine to the correct RPM (aprox 300 RPM higher than when you took the truck out of gear), then hold that RPM steady while you depress the clutch and put the truck back into gear.
@vikingvic10 жыл бұрын
is there a real need to push the clutch to the floor all the time while doubleshifting...? Difference between older trucks and different transmissions right? i tend to prefer floating..
@Garrison6410 жыл бұрын
The clutch should never be pushed to the floor while double shifting as that would stop the transmission and screw up the shift. This is true on any truck with a clutch brake old or new. It is only used to stop the transmission to get the truck into gear if it is out for some reason usually when first starting the truck. Floating is a totally different topic.

#1 The accelerator (throttle)is released,the clutch pedal is pressed,and the gearbox is shifted into neutral.#2 The clutch pedal is then released,the driver matches the engine speed to the gear speed either using throttle (accelerator)(when changing to a lower gear )or waiting for engine speed to decrease (when changing gear to a higher gear)until they are at a level suitable for shifting into the next gear.#3 At the moment when the revs between engine and gear are closely matched,the driver then instantly presses the clutch again to shift into the next gear.The result should be a very smooth gear change. hopefully this helps cause I'm new comer to trucking.

I'm sorry but I noticed you explained by clutching all the way. This is incorrect. Trucks have a clutch brake that activated after a certain clutch depth has been achieved. To disengage the clutch without activating the clutch brake, you only need 2-3 inches of clutch travel. Constantly fully clutching will prematurely wear the clutch brake.

If you talked about driving a stick in the UK, people might think you were a witch in charge of a broomstick. When I drove big stuff years ago, they mostly had 6, 12, or 16 gears, and no-one taught me how to drive with anything more than 6 gears, so I had to figure the rest out for myself. I'd learned on crash boxes so I tended to double de-clutch out of habit, and that gave me time to estimate the next gear I needed whether I was changing up or down, and that seemed to work for me, because I knew immediately I let the clutch out if I was in the right rev range.

You can't just keep saying "it's that easy" because if it were than anyone could just jump in and do it. What you did do was gloss over the most important thing which is matching engine speed to road speed. Sitting in your underwear and socks moving a gearshift around doesn't explain what really needs to be understood which is matching engine speed to road speed and road conditions. It's all done by listening to the engine, knowing what gear the engine needs. It's all by feel and unfortunately the only way to learn it is by getting behind the wheel and fucking up until you learn it. It's only "that easy" once you've mastered it. That being said, it's not 'Rocket Science' and most will get the hang of it rather quickly. Furthermore I've never driven a big truck that would coast to a stoplight in 10th or 'top' gear.

APPRECIATE this man, I didn't know you "pre select" your range IN GEAR in 5th, I thought you did it in neutral when you bring it over to 6th!
@gustavoaguilera33778 жыл бұрын
this guy is doing it right I 2 saw a different video on double clutching where he doesn't put it all the way the first time to put it in neutral but I Google it the proper method and u do have to clutch it in all the way both times cause ur clutching in neutral as a gear so to speak.i to am going to cdl school but I like to research things also thank God for Google.

Who cares what Google says the truck drivers who do it for a living know the right way. That's the problem with the internet too many people read everything and think everything is fact. Pushing a clutch in to the floor engages the clutch brake. Go direct to the transmission manufacturers website Eaton and read where it says "never engage the clutch brake while upshifting or downshifting.

SkilledEddie yeah im in truck school and yeah i only go about 3 inches in with the clutch and when your down shifting its clutch to neutral rev clutch to gear
@swmtothemoon66607 жыл бұрын
wrong. pushing in the clutch all the way for every shift will make you grind your gears and will not go into the next gear. watch this video for an explanation: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGekfJR4mreBi5o

what's the point of double clutching?
@johnmcgilli10 жыл бұрын
Because the transmission is not synchronized like a car or small truck, the gears will grind if you don't double clutch. When you take the clutch back out while in neutral, it gets the gears spinning again and you can select the next gear with out a grind, although if you are at just the "right speed", a double clutch or even a single clutch isn't necessary as the "right speed" will let the gears slip from one to another (you can do this in your car/truck as well). You have to learn/feel what the "right speed" is.

EVERYBODY WATCHING THIS VIDEO... THIS GUY IS A STRAIGHT NEWBIE TRUCK DRIVER! FIRST MISTAKE- LETTING OFF IN FIRST IT IS NOT AT ALL THE SAME AS A CAR. YOU DONT LET OFF AND GIVE IT GAS AT THE SAME TIME. YOU SLOWLY LET OFF THEN THE TRUCK WILL START ROLLING. THEN WHEN YOU FOOT IS OFF COMPLETELY THEN GIVE IT GAS. WHEN SHIFTING ITS ALL BY THE EAR. YOU GO HALF WAY INTO NEUTRAL AND HALF WAY INTO SECOND!!! YOUR NOT SUPPOSE TO GO ALL THE WAY IN. ONCE YOU GET THE HANG OF OF YOU START TO LEARN HOW TO SHIFT WITHOUT THE CLUTCH. WHEN DOWN SHIFT AGAIN HALF WAY IN GEAR. AND DONT LISTEN TO HIM SAYING HOW TO REV IN A SPECIFIC RPM. YOU REV THAT BITCH. FLOOR IT. THE GEAR WILL FLOAT IN WITHOUT THE CLUTCH! PLEASE TAKE IT FROM ME IVE BEEN ONLY DRIVING FOR TWO YEARS BUT I WAS LEARNED BY THE BEST. NOT SOME TRUCKING SCHOOL THAT WILL TEACH YOU THE WRONG WAY TO DRIVE. AND THAT PERSON IS MY FATHER WHO HAS 40 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE. AND OWNS HIS OWN TRUCKING BUSSINESS.

Your adding the gears together was helpful.It is like golf you let the gear sink into place and what I mean by that is in the basement you want 1300 to 1400 you shift to the next gear regardless of load. Upstairs you want 1500 to 1800 to shift anymore than that your just burning fuel. You get your rpms up in 9th regardless of road speed your engine will tell you when it is ready. Shift out of 9th of 10th with a little pressure not grinding when the rpms are right it literally falls into gear.

Why don't transmission manufacturers put in synchronisers so you don't have to double clutch , it is 2016.
@Sberg948 жыл бұрын
+ace frehley They do in the rest of the world. Volvo and Scania for example had syncronised gearbox since late 1950's. But americans don't want to evole when it comes to certain things imo.
@calotcha1088 жыл бұрын
+Emil Sundberg True! LOL!I had been driving Volvos for a while, and really liked how the Volvo engineers look at even small things. Now i'm driving an Kenworth. You can't even compare them. The Volvo is a high class designed machine compared to American trucks.
@JohnMaxGriffin8 жыл бұрын
So right off, General Motors invented the synchronized transmission in the 1920s. Americans also invented the automatic transmission and the torque converter. So if we're being honest with ourselves, the rest of the world have historically been the ones resisting evolution on this topic. The fact that you go right to the silly nationalistic put-downs that were the reason Europe was constantly trying to kill itself up until about 25 years ago - is interesting. Next time consider that there might be reasons for why other people do things differently other than "[not wanting] to evolve". American trucks drive far farther both per dispatch and over their lifetimes than European trucks do. They also drive faster for much longer stretches, which puts huge strain on the top gears and their synchros. You literally can't make a cost-effective synchro that will assuredly last the expected lifetime of the transmission, so they're omitted. It's as simple as that. Even Porsche had difficulty for a long time in making synchronized gearboxes that would last a full 24 hours at Le Mans, and it's not like they were making compromises for cost or profit there. You know that even in the 1980s they put spool differentials in their C1 (old speak for LMP1) cars that won Le Mans? If ever there were an application demanding more modern power transmission it's that, so that really demonstrates what kind of metallurgical concerns have to be grappled with in these high torque, high endurance components. So sorry, this is not a matter of refusal to evolve but rather based on simple mechanical limitations.

using double clutching is not the best way to shift mostly if you are in a big city area. I drive trucks with 10-speed transmission everyday and I have never used that technique
@zainb22618 жыл бұрын

I started trucking in 1975 ...I learned on a 1965 B Model MACK triplex trans...2 shifters hi low box...I have driven every trans out there...5 speed to a 18 speed.I have never tore up a clutch or driveline
@mikefromspace9 жыл бұрын
Wow, stop right there! You didn't even cover the clutch brake first! You must first explain the operation of the clutch brake before any operation of shifting or using that clutch! You know why I hope. As a veteran trucker been in the seat of 50+ vehicles, best clutchless shifting comes from first watching rpm's and timing, but later you can do this just by feel and timing. A new or rebuilt piston ring set will drop rpm's a lot faster when cold, so knowing your rpm drop by testing it after warm up is critical, since shifting by feel(experience) could snap a u-joint. (I snapped one once w/a new engine). You know you're good when you can shift at any speed above 15 and nobody can feel it or even hear it in some trucks...but no grinding in any case. A slight grind only upon takeoff from a dead stop is all you should ever hear.
@Jamesoutdoors-jw6nz9 жыл бұрын
Brake cluching is only nessesary when on a hill. You should know this. Im 12 and I know this.
@mikefromspace9 жыл бұрын
Jamesoutdoors4453 I've known a few people who did not know what a clutch brake was and ended up wearing it out because they didn't know it was there. A little advice or a $750 clutch. I did notice that I wrote "clutch shifting" but I mean "clutchless shifting".
@mikefromspace9 жыл бұрын
***** So you're telling me that when you learned to drive, you did not watch rpm's. Even the D.O.T. handbook tells you to watch rpm's. You don't learn to listen or time shifts until you've learned the rpm method. Schools ALL teach you to watch rpms, so your statement is ludicrously stupid. According to you, everyone should go out and destroy transmissions until they can hear it or time it just right. Even then you'd still have a problem because in an engine with new rings the rpm's drop substantially faster on cold mornings and before it warms up. Had you considered bloodletting yourself?
