I hold the utmost respect for ken, the early days of UFC when men were just entering a ring to fight the toughest and most skilled fighters in the world not knowing what they were getting into. That and I met him in Marysville wa. When he came outside after a meet and greet at a dispensary to meet my friends son who was under age and couldn't get into the event. He hung out and talked old UFC days with us, he was fighting when we were Highschool and was definitely our favorite of the era. Very cool dude.

Ken Shamrock claims that Pancrase marked the beginning of MMA, while Rorion Gracie claims that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the precursor to today's MMA. They're both right, but for different reasons. Ken is correct that the World Pancrase Create Inc. (WPC) was established May 16, 1993, with the first WPC event being held on September 21, 1993. Rorion is right about the Gracie family's contribution to today's MMA in that Luta Livre/Vale Tudo tournaments were held in Brazil as far back as 1909. Essentially, neither Pancrase (submission fighting) nor Gracie Jiu-Jitsu are the lone antecedent to the MMA that we see today. Both systems (featured in the early UFC events) were integral in establishing what has become modern MMA.

I remember as a kid watching Ken Shamrock ☘️ for the first time (WWF) and all the submissions he had. I felt dangerous just knowing that I’d learned by watching the worlds most dangerous man. I felt like I could belly to belly suplex anybody if I got mad enough. So I learned to control my anger so that I never snapped like Shamrock. Sometimes I let people walk over me more than they should. But It taught me a form of discipline in a way. I’d look at how Shamrock handled all the referees when he snapped and told myself just to maintain peace or else that could happen 😂. He reminded me of Wolverine from the X-Men comics.

Damn. I had no idea Ken grew up the way he did. I recently saw a clip of Khabib Nurmagomedov saying that the UFC wasn't for soft people who had easy upbringings. He said that everyone in the UFC was incredibly tough and disciplined. Going on to explain that the reason for that was having a very hard life growing up. Saying that he believed you can't develop the type of toughness necessary to make it in high level professional MMA when you had a comfortable upbringing. Hearing about Ken's childhood really serves to reinforce Khabib's opinions.

Ken was one of my favs during the WWE attitude era. He was so badass. He was the reason I got into MMA early. This man is criminally underrated and underappreciated in both the worlds of pro-wrestling and MMA!

Kens body is so broken from the damage over the years. Looked like the typical adjustments were not on the menu. Hope the cte passes him by. Great interview by the way.

That's the biggest take away here..longevity. We all do it when we are young, pushing our bodies to the max in sport or training etc.., but to have the foresight to know that the biggest long term adversary you will ever have is you, makes you stop and think about how and what you train. If grappling and pounding weights leaves you unable to turn your neck into your late 50's or walk properly, maybe it isn't worth pursuing long term. You may never even have a fight again in your life yet you continue to destroy your body by the way you train. Gotta find that balance.

@XxSYNDROISxX No, his legal name is Shamrock. At the group home he was adopted by Bob Shamrock. He took the last name in honor of his new father. He wasn’t born as a Shamrock just like Frank Shamrock.
