Winchester Model 70 Accuracy Part 2

Beautiful pre 64 Winchester 70.....the saga continues!
Lightened the trigger pull.
Replaced the scope.
Replaced the rings.
Scrubbed the bore.
Set action screw torque to factory specifications.
I’d say we just about did it all short of glass bedding the stock or pillar bedding the action screws. We will look at some initial results today. I would say it was well worth the effort.

The old saying, "you can't hit what you can't see" is still valid today. Better optics always mean tighter groups. I shoot nothing less than 12x on all my scopes and most are 14-16x. I think you have done a wonderful job on the old Mod 70. What a treasure you have there..

Excellent closing statement 1st cold bore shot in a hunting trip is most important, I torqued my supergrade to 45lbs psi and now they lay 3 shots dime size @100yards. Great video keep m coming

You did everything right. Copper fouling is/was something the average shooter didn't/doesn't understand. Referring to the average hunter who just runs an oiled patch down the bore and thinks it's "clean." Your idea even torquing being more important than going to a specific number also 100% spot on. The middle screw messed with a lot of Model 70 owners (myself included until I learned). You got that exactly right. Just snug enough to be flush. No more. May be why the new ones went to one piece bottom metal with no middle screw at all. You have a very nice rifle and even better after your TLC. The only thing different with my experience is that Remington Core-Lokt which used to shoot very well for me has in the last several years been consistently the worst shooting ammo for me. Not sure what changed.

I’ve had dozens of M70’s. That does not make me an expert on M70 accuracy. What makes me an expert is winning in long range shooting competition where an understanding of how to get the best results from the rifle is paramount. Getting the best from an M70 sporting rifle is called match conditioning and this usually consists of unitizing the barreled action to the rifle stock, trigger adjustment for smooth trigger control, and application of marksmanship. Thing is even having addressed all these concerns if the barrel is not exactingly uniform from chamber to muzzle accuracy will suffer and thus shooters should not have expectations that any factory barreled M70 will yield a good zero even when the shooter has a consistent relationship with the gun and ground. At any rate, I had a post 64 M70 in .264 Winchester Magnum which was sub MOA from a particular lot of 140 grain Winchester Power-Point Ammunition and this helped me get a good hit on a Pronghorn at 488 yards flat ground distance back in the late 80’s. These days I mostly shoot a match conditioned AR in competitions and do very little hunting but if I did I might go for another M70, since they’re now made mostly in State of the Art facilities operated by FN in South Carolina and Portugal so the newest M70’s are really well put together.

While this is an older video , I must say i have to agree Dave. That first cold bore shot is the money. If you are stacking the first 2 close unless you are do a prairie dog hunt out west or something , those matter. Also if your high volume hunting you probably are going to have a heavier barrel anyhow. I think the tiny groups help us have confidence of consistency but cold bore is most important. Nice work on getting that model 70 shooting.

That rifle's a beauty, nothing like a classic old M70 in original wood and blue. The Weaver K-6 looked perfect also. I was happy to see your improvements were simply making sure the rifle was clean and adjusted to spec. Yeah, I'd be proud to carry that M70 to the woods. Your cold-shot advice at the end of the video was gold. Every new hunter should think long and hard about the last few minutes of this video because the cold-shot idea holds true for every hunting rifle. Great video, subscribed!

DR Drake 63 Great looking Rifle . I like your concept on a cold bore shot. We all tend to sight our rifles from the bench . Taking shots in the normal hunting positions if there is such a thing lol. My Whatever rifle is a Remington 760/7600 great for follow up shots. See this on 9/10/23

What a beautiful gun. My dad had the same gun in the same caliber. Traded it for a Remington 700 in .270 caliber which I own and use now. I love it but the model 70 is legendary. Great video as well sir.

My savage 110 stacks core lokts under an inch at 100. Good ammo. I always do clean bore cold bore shots. Then I do fouled bore cold bore shots. Almost always fouled bore cold bore shot is more consistent. Good shooting

I think groups will open up at 100 yards warm or cold barrel. Love to see a group at 100 yards. Beautiful pre 64.

I like the rifle and you are right about the mechanics. With that being said, the thing that is going to help that rifle shoot to its full potential is doing a good pillar bedding job on it. Or at minimum a proper glass bedding job. Also shooting it at 50 yards is not really doing that rifle any justice. I've had/have many pre 64's that shoot sub moa 5 shot groups. The minimum range I shoot to test accuracy is 100 yards and then stretch them out to verify how accurate they are at the maximum range I will be shooting deer or elk at. This tells me what the rifle is capable of and like you say, you aren't going to be shooting off of a bench when hunting, but at least I know what my rifle is capable of. The rest is up to me and how much I practice to know whether I can ethically make the shot. Good video and informative. Glad to see you are using that old model 70. Those old rifles were made to last a few lifetimes and can be passed down from generation to generation. The stock is not original to that rifle, but has some nice lines/ergonomics. Kudo's for keeping the scope as period correct as well. Those old steel tubed weavers are great old scopes.

I also notice that the barrel screw is not there. That helps a little with free floating.

Yes light weight barrels can cause a group to open up, But not always, depends on the load and caliber as well. the lighter rifle is easy to carry into the woods or mountain area for hunting. Now about that 100 or 200 yard shooting , I would like to see that.

You mention replacing the scope mount and rings for the Weaver k4/K6 - 60-B scope. On my 1956, .30-06 model 70 Featherweight, I have the Redfield one piece mount (PAT.NO 1,837,290) and rings holding the K4 60-B Weaver. What did you replace the old mount/rings with?

FYI be careful setting a wood gun on a surface like that. Some guns will show small denting in the wood afterwords. I towel will save you. I have a rifle with many small dents from a buddy setting it on some 22 shells, just trying to save you the disappoint. Beauty of a gun!
