I know folks keep harping about the lack of stereo, but try to keep in mind that you can create some really interesting stereo effects just by overdubbing, hardpanning L + R and adjusting timings on things like decay, release, and reverb tail or room shapes. Even having a slightly faster timing on one side of a decay on a filter envelope nets you some really fantastic sounds that you wouldn't otherwise get. Think about this more like an electric guitar where you're not likely to have stereo in real life in the first place. Most of your interesting results are going to come from overdubs and subtle differences between tracks.

Having just scored one of these, it was nice to have a deep, but well-explained breakdown of its menu and mod system, as they will definitely take a little getting used to! Having sold all of my clunky / huge analog polys recently, this thing is gonna be great for injecting some of that analog warmth back into my music. I love the sounds already!
@valdir74263 жыл бұрын
well I find the menu system quite elegant and it's cool you can go without a display. The hardest to access menu options are also those you are less likely to tweak often so it works. I have the neutron and there menu options that are really more obtuse than this; I think it's the same for the 0 coast. Maybe encoders with a light would have been easier because it's true having to reset faders is annoying; but I'm not sure it was the aesthetic they wanted to go to. the lack of stereo with a reverb is also not great; but you can always add your own. Honestly these days I'm more into virtual analog soft synths for poly synths because it's simply more convenient in the context of a full composition (and I like a bit of stereo) but I really like the features and format of this synth; if I ever feel I need a poly analog I'd pick this without hesitation. The form factor; preset and midi implementation also means it can work as a "deluxe plugin" without the trouble of having a full fledged synth with a five octave midi keyboard in your studio.

Either way, I'm excited to throw this in the mix with my circuit tracks / keystep / Typhon setup

Since you can plug in reverb or chorus pedal and always have many ways to convert it to stereo; there don't seem to be many cons except the menu :) And also for the people who really not like to add reverb just behind, I think it might be a better option to not have one on board :) Reverb is another instrument, especially the spring. In short, in my humble opinion there is no better synth on the market right now in this budget range. Although they completely different, it sounds more like old Juno's than 06A. I guess well-made synths know how to fill gaps in the industry and stand out from the rest. This is obviously one of them.

Well, it sounds great. An important thing to know about it is that it does not respond well to velocity changes: the envelopes will pop and click. Roland's response to me: "I think this is due to the original system-1 being built with a fixed velocity keyboard and the 1m running the same system program. As it stands now it may be best to use it without velocity for patches where you find the clicks very noticeable." So be aware. Other than that it's a pretty interesting weird thing, get it used for cheap.

Dreadbox made the Typhon. They know screens are helpful. The deal here is the pandemic and supply chain issues and prices. If car companies can get the chips, synth companies are going to have limitations too. Within those constraints, this is what was possible, and I think it’s wonderful. I hope to own one when it’s time to buy a new synth next year. This year it’s Typhon for me, but I strongly considered this instead.
@XanderEwald3 жыл бұрын
I am not sure if people realize we are still in the middle of a severe global chip and electronic parts shortage due to the pandemic. The design of this and various other recent instruments has clearly been adapted to make them happen despite many usually common parts being low or out of stock. Notice how this is already shipping while some of the large, feature-rich synths that were announced shortly before the pandemic are still stuck in pre-order limbo? There’s a reason for that.
@Xul3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how this is any reason for (potential) customers to ignore that clumsy UI. It's not like the synth world was in deperate need for some affordable 6 voice polysynth. We had already very good options and the other dreadbox mono synths were great. So why release such a lackluster thing that probably won't stay for long in most studios/setups once the honeymoon phase is over?

I have a question about not being able to add negative modulation. With the way this is designed is it not possible to have, for example, the modulation wheel close the filter? A small display, say, a 128x32 OLED.. which in wholesale costs a few pence, would make the UI so much nicer to use, keep the 3 buttons and encoder, but have them control on-screen parameters. One of the fundamental basics of HCI and UI design is providing clear feedback to the user, the interface on this IS NOT CLEAR. Development time to implement a display, say over SPI or I2C (common protocols on microcontrollers, in fact you don't even need a hardware implementation) is not a lot of programming work, or even development time using a display with a well known driver, say SSD1306. Its definitely a capable synth, and nice sounding, but for £450, there are better options out there that will do everything it does, with a much nicer interface, and ultimately that's going to be its downfall. For realistically a £50 increase in cost to the user (development time, components etc...) its an addition that really should have been considered.

"but for £450, there are better options out there that will do everything it does" sorry but no there aren't; not analog; not poly; not in this form factor.
@lewisd563 жыл бұрын
@@valdir7426 the beringer 12d is about £50, more similar form factor, and a much nicer interface, and significantly more capable, with double the voices. The minilogue XD module is the same price as this, ok, you only get 4 voices (but this is solved with the digital osc), but you get once again a far more capable synth with a better interface. You've got pretty much all of roland's boutique series, which, while not analogue, are a very similar form factor and offer a very good recreation of analogue sounds despite being digital. among other options. I just question the UI design choices in this, if i was in the market for a compact analogue synth, I still care about what its like to use, and how easily I can make use of its capabilities, the UI on this feels like it was designed for the needs of the engineer who put it together, who knows how it all works, NOT for the customer. As a programmer, This is exactly the sort of thing i try to avoid doing software UIs, even hardware stuff. What baffles me is, as i mentioned the increase in cost and development time isn't significant enough to warrant the lack of a display, especially since there is clearly a capable MC in the synth anyway to do the digital reverb, surely its got the spare clock cycles and 3 extra pins to drive a display.

@@lewisd56 well ok you make good points; although both other option you mention (Behringer and minilogue) are more expensive (at least in europe) and way bulkier than this. I never tried the behringer so I can comment on its quality. And comparing this to virtual analog is not really fair; analog will always be a lot more expensive to manufacture. I'm not an analog purist; far from that; but I have a myriad of virtual analog plugins so if I buy an analog style synth I prefer it to be really analog. I find this interface elegant; the most accessible parameters are those you're gonna mostly use; the rest is for programming your synth so it's okay they're a bit hidden. Maybe having both envellopes stacked on the same control is gonna be a problem but the rest seems really ok. I think it's cool you can directly program the second LFO; modhweel; etc by setting the amount with the fader of the thing it controls; it beats diving in a tiny screen menu all the time. I don't like tiny screens with endless menu diving; so I prefer this. From watching the video I know exactly how this synth works and what each menu does; I can't say this for most synths featured on this channel. And the form factor is really unique for this much function; for me that's really important; having a full-fledge synth is out of the question due to space constraint; and you can toss it in a bag. And it's sexy and it sounds great (...and having said all that I'm still not gonna buy it because I don't need this right now but well)

You're making this out to be much worse than it is. I've had mine for 2 days, after half an hour I was flying on it and now I can confidently put the manual back in the box. It's not a difficult synth to use, and the UI is very well thought-out within the limitations.

That trick with the aftertouch (or modwheel, not sure about velocity) to chord mode is wild... I can see quite a few musical uses for that... This sounds really great. I may have missed it, but could someone say how the MIDI channel is set? A dive into the menu? Does it retain it between power downs?

@@loopop Thanks for the fast answer! It's great that is retained. I know a few synths where the channel isn't retained (mostly older synths), which makes for a longer, more complicated set-up.

Great review and tips as usual mr loopop, kudos! - This synth is really fat sounding and has some really cool features - especially the LFO with its oneshot mode is cool! And why don't all synths have two filters (hpf and lpf as a minimum)? Really great design decision of dreadbox! Suggestion for the LFO mode would be to have a high and low speed in one. This would be more convenient in our opinion. Then use shift (after moving the LFO speed fader instead of before) or another button to have fine control f.e. - since the size of the sliderrange is limited they probably implemented lo and hi speed. Sound wise, if it was stereo and with all the extra features (lfo-destinations rock!) and a chorus instead of reverb (dsp - so should be doable) it could be a Alpha Juno 3 in our opinion. For studio use the menu system is doable an no issue. Especially if there will be an editor or vst editor this is sorted for studio usage. For live, this is another story. It seems to be complicated and very easy to make mistakes. To sum up, its sounds really good for a great price, so thanks again for this very, very in-depth review!

I went to check this out at the local synth shop. Brought my linnstrument for the new mpe mode. Have you tried mpe mode? I like it but I wasn't able to modulate oscillator amplitude with velocity in mpe mode. So all notes were the same volume. it works nice for pitch bends and filter cut changes on a per note basis. But just curious if you had tried it and if its possible to do amplitude with pressure or velocity. thanks!
