In celebration of the 9th anniversary of the anime, I decided to sub the show with my friend Zedopp. We weren't too sure about some of the names, so they may not be entirely correct, but everything else should be fairly close to the original.
The material presented in the video belongs to Ashi Productions and TV Tokyo. We make no claims to anything. This is a fansub by fans for fans. 13 years ago (2009) I recorded the Final Falcon Punch on a cheap digital camera and would play for my friends at school. Since that time I became very familiar with that scene and the song "Meaning of Truth" that plays in the background... It wouldn't be until now, over a decade later I finally understand the context behind all the imagery in that iconic moment. The F-Zero anime turned out to be a wild-high ride, much better than I was expecting and filled with a cast of so many likable characters (Super Arrow and Octoman are such lovable standouts) and expansive world building but most importantly, it was fun. Thank you so much for the subtitles. The Japanese version actually has the Nintendo game music (and Norio Wakamoto's delightfully hammy Black Shadow performance) so it's really the only way to watch it IMO. The fact still remains, if I had a choice on how I could "go", it would be like Captain Falcon here. F-Zero may be a dormant series at Nintendo, but at least there's always this series to come back to and enjoy again. But with that "To Be Continued....?" We can always hope.

AAAAAHHHH this episode got me crying. that scene where andy performed the falcon punch and his helmet came off of his head REALLY got me going. though, as much as i miss andy, i am happy that ryu got to be with haruka, clank gets to drive the dragon bird, and everyone is happy. what a fantastic show with such an emotional ending that will stay in the back of my head forever. the writers were so good at making these characters more than one-dimensional characters with few priorities, like in gx. these characters had goals, they had desires, feelings, personality. the writers did a fantastic job at fleshing them out and i don't think i've ever held such a strong attachment to a bunch of fictional racers. this is the first time a cartoon has made me actually burst into real life tears. whelp, TIME TO WATCH IT AGAIN!!

I couldn't avoid shedding a couple tears. *Manly F-Zero racer tears!* It's an awesome watch, I'd definitely reccomend to any and all F-Zero fans, if only to see your favorite characters in animated glory. Kids these days don't know it, but the whole FALCON PUNCH THROUGH THE GALAXY thing was such a HUGE Nintendo meme between the releases of SSB Melee and Brawl, and I was very happy that it was actually lampooned in the Subspace Emissary mode of Brawl. I have never felt what I am feeling from an anime, maybe because the actual protagonist does pass away on this that gives me this mixed feelings. For one it was awesome to see Falcon use his punch, but sadness knowing he dies. Yeah Ryu is the new captain but he can never be as cool as the original. There is only one Falcon.

I had the benefit of watching this anime without rose-tinted glasses for it or F-Zero in general. So here are my thoughts. I really, really liked this anime. It does such a great job fleshing out characters that were otherwise pretty one-dimensional. The animation noticeably gets better throughout the series, and this episode felt like it had a slightly bigger budget than all the other episodes. In fact, some of the CGI, imo, holds up til today. Even if most of them were for only one episode, every pilot from F-Zero X had a chance in the spotlight, with interesting ways of characterizing them. The original characters (Ryu, Haruka, Lucy, Clank, etc.) actually had some charm to them, and I would very much like to see them in future F-Zero games. Hell, if they ever reboot the series (which is honestly the only way they could make a new entry at this point, let's be honest), they could slightly alter their roles to better fit the main universe (like Ryu could keep the time traveller thing, but make it so Falcon takes Ryu under his wing to help him through his new life and become an F-Zero racer.). Ryu Suzaku. He's not the best protagonist I've seen, but he's still really high up. While it's kinda dissappointing that an F-Zero anime didn't focus mostly on Captain Falcon, it makes up for it with the ending, of how one man became the new Captain Falcon. I like how he struggles with his new life even near the end, since it creates a personal sense of friction since no one really understands him. But he learns that he was never alone, and that is what helps him realize his true power (as seen in episode 47). His devotion to Haruka is sweet and, once he finally confirms that Haruka is Miss Killer, his never-give-up attitude in trying to rescue her just shows how much he truly loves her. Also, his name, how he looks with his hair down, and especially the beginning of episode 50, all of those leave me to wonder if Ryu from Street Fighter was a source of inspiration for his design. While a bit repetitive at times, the (Japanese) soundtrack is super good. I especially love the Mute City and Big Blue remixes. Now for the cons. The anime starts off a bit slowly, hell it gets kinda boring after episode 2, but it starts picking up again after episode 10. Episode 39 could've been over in 7 minutes if the writers remembered that the MTF (Mobile Task Force) never really treated Clank like a child. They could've made it so Blood Falcon was blackmailing him to keep him quiet (like threatening to destroy his father's brain) and that way the stakes would've been higher. This episode in particular could've stood to be 2 or 3 minutes longer, cause imo it has a little bit of an issue with the pacing. And my biggest gripe (but not really all that big) is that they could've focused a bit more on the actual racing. Overall, a really good anime that people really should give at least one chance. Personally, it's a 10/10 (but not on like my Top 10. Maybe Top 15.). And thank you guys for subbing it in full. Also, I find it cool that the ending scene is a recreation of the non-flashback parts of episode 1. Edit from about 2 years later, upon revisits, I drop the anime down to about an 8/10. In my original rating, I rated it as the absolute bare minimum for a 10/10, but now I feel like the cons kinda hamper the experience. But still, if F-Zero 99 paves the way to an F-Zero renaissance of sorts, I say we petition Nintendo to let this anime have a full, uncut dub of this series. And when I said the final episode should’ve been longer, I now realize that a two-parter would’ve really helped, especially if the allocated most of the budget for the second half, which would be the second half of this episode.
