Dreads for Short Hair - Partial Dreads

How to make dreads in short hair. This video is an easy to follow tutorial on how to put dreadlocks in short hair. I suggest using this technique to dread your hair when it is short because it's easy to maintain and doesn't shorten your hair much more than it already is. This deadlocking method is calling the twist and rip and will create thinner longer dreads from the beginning than the teasing method will. Twist and rip works best on dry hair as opposed to greasy or silky hair because the drier the hair is, the better it is at locking up and holding the dreads in. My hair is quite dry from being bleached blonde so my dreadlocks hold very well but I still choose to put products on them to keep the fly aways in place and hold the dreads together while they are forming. Dreads take quite some time to mature and settle into themselves so you want to make sure you put them in proper from the beginning.
I like and choose partial dreads for my short hair because they give me great volume while still allowing me to maintain a cool short haircut. I get the best of both worlds! I love having short hair but while being on the road travelling I don't have a way of washing and styling my hair every day for volume, so I choose dreads as a natural way of getting what I want. Dreadlocks add so much texture to my short hair, more volume, and give it the looks I've always wanted. I love that with partial dreads I can colour each dread differently if I want it and even simply add wraps or beads or feathers for something special. Having dreads in my short hair is my favourite addition yet, and I'm sure I'm sure I'm have them for years to come.

Please, please, please if you are planning on keeping the dreadlocks in your hair for more than a week, do not put any hair products in them!! The products get stuck in the dreads and the knots don't allow for proper drainage, causing buildup and molding. This is why when you have dreads, you should only use residue-free items to wash ONLY, no styling products or wax needed.

Hey this is an awesome video! Just so you guys know you really shouldn't use wax or anything sticky in dreads it will work it's way into the middle and is pretty much impossible to get it out of the center! When things like that get in there it can hold moister in and cause mildew/mold! Instead of using products use salt water spray and as they mature the little hairs that stick out will get pulled in on their own! You can also use pure aloe vera on them instead because it washes away easily! :)

Hey! Depends on how you feel about short hair dreads as a whole head. I prefer a full head on long hair but you could always do it and see how you like it. If you don't, then remove some :)

Julie McQuade please please don’t add product and use residue free shampoos. That is the healthiest way to grow beautiful thick locks, mine are 4 months in now and they are getting past my ears (starting at a shorter length than hers). Just watching out for my fellow dread heads. Also dreadhead hq has some really good products for straight and curly hair locking process.

If you leave them they will eventually shrink up with washing into themselves (but they will be messy!) Dreads take a lot of time to come into their own and look 'right' so try not to let it get to you in the earliest stage :) xx
