I just tried installing se dreads on my hair about a week ago and also did your method of hiding the rubberband with synthetic hair as well. I had to take them out very early cause my head became nonstop itchy and I realized that the teased hair and dreads were tangled together easily. I can’t tell if the sectioned plaits I had on my hair were too tight (I crocheted my dreads through my hair) or if the synthetic hair tagging caused my head to itch so bad!!! I’m giving it another try soon and this time I don’t care if people see the rubberbands xD
@doctoredlocks4 жыл бұрын
Its usually because they were installed too tightly and the bumps are caused by tiny irritations at the hair follicles on the edges of each section - super common. For the first few days you can take some benedryl and ibuprofen - it usually calms down after day 3. Do watch for hairs being pulled out - then the individual dreads that are doing that need to be loosened a bit. You can tell because the hairs that are sticking out will have white colored root bulbs on one end. Don't worry, you'll get this. Once you get your system down, its going to look and feel amazing!

I do not recommend dreads on hair shorter than 3''. You are experiencing tension bumps from the hair pulling on the hair follicle which can lead to hair loss.

All synth dread installations last as long as the grow out looks good - which they usually need to be redone at about a month and a half. You can wash them everyday, but make sure that they are completely dry. It's more important to maintain the oils from your scalp which you can do with witch hazel and cotton rounds.

Attempted this on my short hair (it's the same length as the model in this video) but they were too tight I think. I needed to take them out because it was causing massive headaches. Could this be the weight of the dreads vs how short my hair is? Would you recommend a certain width\weight for the dreads for the short hair? Maybe a thinker amount of hair per dread?
@doctoredlocks2 жыл бұрын
It is possible that they were too tight or that your dread was too much weight for your section. Everyone is going to have a different scalp tolerance. I would suggest trying a larger section and going a little looser your next round.

This will depend on the thickness of the dreads and your desired completed style. You will need sections that will support the weight of each dread and create a secure braid.

Hello! I got my synthetic extensions in because of your video, even bought my dreads from Doctored Locks and I love them so much I made the investment in human hair extensions! So, my request is for a video showing how to permanently attach them to short hair, and how short is too short? Thanks for all y’all do!
@doctoredlocks6 жыл бұрын
Sweeeet! :) Check out the video for permanently installing human hair dreadlocks. There really isn't a way to do them on "short" hair - as to get a good grip and blend, you do need a few inches. BUT while you are waiting for those few inches to come in, just keep doing this style of install. :) If some places have length and others don't, you can even transition into permanent section by section over time. :)
@ashleyshaulis84996 жыл бұрын
Does it matter how you spilt each section into two? Cause i do mine opposite than you. For SE i do vertical and DE i do horizontal. Makes the dreads lay better in my opinion.
@doctoredlocks6 жыл бұрын
It just depends on how you want your dreads to sit - as you said, the DE's would go side to side rather than stacked. I think it kind of depends on the dreads and if they have a good kink at the center section - but I prefer the unbraided part to cover the braided side. Honestly, its all preference - there really isn't any right or wrong with this. If I ever redo these, I will add what each install looks like - the up and down vs side to side so anyone installing can see what it looks like. :) I think that will be helpful. :) Thanks for the inspiration!!
@ashleyshaulis84996 жыл бұрын
Doctored Locks Awesome. Just prefer to do it that way cause i do bigger sections of hair and theres not as much space between dreads that way.

I own two sets of DE dreads and have not been able to install them easily, but they are not the best quality. i finally got the synth hair and am looking to make se dreada any tips?? I have a grown out messy pixie
@doctoredlocks3 жыл бұрын
Its easier to install SE on short hair because the sections can be smaller - but that only really applies to normal thickness. For example, I made a full DE set that was perfect for short hair because they were thinner than pencil width (there were 105 dreads). If you want to make DE, just do them thin. If you want them normal thickness, then SE is easier. :)

I noticed someone mentioned hair loss. Is this permanent or does that solely depend on the individual? I've been using dreads for about a year now and my hair is somewhat thin but never noticed hair loss (aside from after having them in for 3-4 months then taking them out). But for the first day or two I do get redness in some areas
@doctoredlocks3 жыл бұрын
Hair loss can occur if the dreads are installed too tightly, they are at improper angles or you are adding too much weight to a section of hair. You will see the shed of your hair come out when removing the extensions since all the hairs your would have lost are bound up in that braid. If you see the hair pulling from the scalp with the hair follicle attached, then you will want to adjust the tension, angle or weight.

The age old question! It depends. SE you are going to see the braid more. DE you are going to see two tails. For me, I always prefer DE because they go in faster and I always put the unbraided side to the top to hide the braids more. Everyone has an opinion though - and no one is wrong. :) I just like the speed and coverage from DE. :) If your hair is really really short though, you can use much smaller sections with SE and have it look most natural.

I had my friend use elastic matrix thread for my second install (also only her second time installing). I like it because it doesn't pull as hard as the rubber bands and gives me more freedom to style the dreads without the discomfort. However, I am on day 3 and the thread isn't holding very well. Some of the dreads are falling out. I don't know if it's because my friend didn't put them in tight enough or because the thread isn't gripping on to my short, fine hair. Is this normal or do they usually stay in without a problem?
@doctoredlocks7 жыл бұрын
I use this stuff for all my dread installs and they should stay for a couple of months with no problem. If you email me some pics, I may be able to help troubleshoot what is going wrong specifically. A lot of times its the angle of the braid on the dread. We have a video called "why are my dreads slipping" (at least I think that's what we named it lol) and that might give you some ideas too. You can send pics to doc@doctoredlocks.com :)

I did this to my short hair and it caused immense pressure and damage to my hair, as in ripping out the hair near the parts, because of how tight it has to be with hair that short in order to prevent the dread falling off. Everyone, NOT recommended.
@doctoredlocks5 жыл бұрын
You need to guage this for yourself. I just did my partner's hair with this method last night.. If you are ripping out hair, then yes, they are too tight. This is a great method when your hair is too short for a braid - but you do need to have enough hair to do the method properly. You'll know very quickly if they are too tight. You can usually tug a bit at the base to loosen the fit without having to do a full take down. As with any method, use your own discretion.
