Hey,
Here's my Surly project. I always wanted a gravel/commute/travel bike, that reflects the funny side of life. So I chose a Surly cross-check, because you can build it how the hell you want. Then I found those huge Velo Orange Klunker bars - they made me remember of my BMX childhood. Add a Brooks saddle for the confort, the new Shimano GRX transmission, Dura Ace downtube shifters, DT Swiss wheels, Panaracer Paselas... and here we are: my new bike, that I mounted all by myself :)
So funny to ride.
Enjoy!

About 30 seconds in: I wish I had this person's tools. 60 seconds in: Ah but then I'd need his knowledge. 90 seconds in: Alas I'd also need his skill. 120 seconds in: In time, maybe I'll get there. Beeeautiful build and excellent vid - all killer no filler. Peaceful + right music, and quiet enough that we could hear the satisfying sounds of the build coming together. Agree that the sage + honey is just about perfection. Thanks for posting.

Oh wow... just wow I have an "Urban Degrey" Cross Check, set up single speed: nice and easy gearing for cruising around and climbing the double track around town. This build is so nice, and the video is so well done! I am totally on the 1X bandwagon and have to say that 2X10 looks great, especially considering its pragmatism. The downtube shifters are such a nice touch. I love rim brakes: I ride year round and have no issue. Sure the pads wear a bit quicker, but it's no bother, v-brakes are so easy! Oh yeah, my Cross Check also has the klunkers on it: so nice to ride it this way!

This bike was really easy to assemble kzbin.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

Buy a cheap bike off facebook marketplace or ebay. Have fun experimenting with 2nd hand parts that if you mess up while you learn, you're not out a lot of money. Chances are, you probably won't make too many mistakes, and the ones you do will be correctable. And you'll probably end up with a pretty fun bike.

I just bought a used Surly Cross Check. Its 10 years old. Currently it has drop bars, but I want to install the Velo Orange Klunker bars then move the shifter to the down tube. The shifter is in the ends on the drop bars. Hate them there. How do you like the bars? what would you have done different on this build?
@GuidolineMinivan
@GuidolineMinivan 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I changed a few things over the years. First, the shifters: I swapped for friction (dia compe). Then the bars. I opted for wide drop bars. The Klunker ones felt too harsh for me, and the swipe was too much for me too. The rest is still there 😉

Beautiful bike, I love the idea of using an MX- handlebar. I have an similar project in progress with a Schwinn-style frame and BMX stem and an old MX handlebar. But I will choose thumbies on my handlebar, I think downtube shifters are not the best choice for a Klunker.
@GuidolineMinivan
@GuidolineMinivan 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I can understand your point. I have an old "demi-course" Cilo bike. I could put some 35mm tires and transform it in a old-school gravel bike - with downtube shifters. I wanted the same thing with a modern bike. And: big difference, if you put a basket on your fork: you'll have less cables in the way with downtube shifters!
@OldschoolDT
@OldschoolDT 4 жыл бұрын
@@GuidolineMinivan I have a similar Projekt in Mind, I want a hand soldered Enik Frame to transform into a Gravel bike. But there are two reasons, why I would not use brifters, first it has Cantilever/V-brake sockets, but I want to use V-brakes and there for Tektro RL-520 brake levers. Second, brifters and handlebarrolls didn't work well together. So downtube shifters or bar end shifters are the solution.
@GuidolineMinivan
@GuidolineMinivan 4 жыл бұрын
@@OldschoolDT Enik frame? that's looking good ;) bar-end shifters are also very stylish, but then you have to find a route for the cable... and therefore I prefer downtube shifters

@@GuidolineMinivan - And you didn't have trouble with the shifting? The 10-speed derailleurs are more picky about which shifters should work with those. Good question...! It could be a good option too. No particular reason to choose GRX; only the fancy newness of it. I like thumbies too. My build is my build (personal views inside). Wanted also downtube shifters to change the bars from time to time.

Thanks for sharing your build, I'm digging it! Doing a similar build with my Cross Check. I'd love to try the GRX600 11-speed crank in combination with M8000 SGS XT derailleur and the 10-42 cassete for max range. Since the GRX crank is designed for a wider chainline, did you have any trouble getting your shifting to work 100%? No excess chain noise? No gears slipping when backpedalling? I'm worried that the 130mm rear hub in combination with the wider spaced GRX chainline will cause havoc.
@GuidolineMinivan
@GuidolineMinivan 4 жыл бұрын
Hello, I changed the dura-ace shifters for some friction ones. Dia-Compe ene. That worked better than the dura ace indexed ones (that was difficult to set precisely). No particular chain noise, no gears slipping. Just difficulties to index the dura-ace shifters. But since I put the friction ones (old technology IS better) it's a perfect randonneur ;)
@maximee
@maximee 4 жыл бұрын
@@GuidolineMinivan Thanks, good to hear you've got no apparent chainline issues even with the narrower 130mm hub. I've decided to use a 135mm rear hub to give me the correct 47mm chainline I need for the GRX 2x11 crankset (46.9mm chainline). If anybody else is reading this in the future, the shimano XT 10-42 cassette measures in at 41mm, making it a 47mm chainline on a 135mm hub.

@GuidolineMinivan
@GuidolineMinivan 4 жыл бұрын
Well, the Surly is for "fatties"... big comfortable tires - maybe a bit too big and slow for what you want. The All-City Mr. Pink for instance is more a road bike with enough space for 32mm - which is enough to go gravel sometimes. Personally for this type of rides, I ride a fairlight faran first generation.

Thanks! No problem at all... I find that the rim brakes are far more better and lighter than the disc brakes... the rubbing issue on disc brakes is annoying. The bleeding process is a pain in the a**. With rim brakes, ok, you have to do some fine tuning, but it's straightforward. And change the pads is way easyer. I'll never buy any disc brake bike.

Well... that’s sometimes a mystery. But to solve that, I spend a lot of time looking on the specs of each component, online. You have to watch particularly the sizes of the tubes (seat tube, stem, handlebar, fork, etc.). You begin with the frame. The builder specifies for example what bottom bracket size you should use, what seat tube diameter, etc. Let me know if you have a doubt!

@@baksi07 thanks again Philip! For my size - 184cm, I ride bikes with a 56 or 58 cm size. This time, I wanted something compact, so I chose the 56cm, but with a longer stem... I'm not a geek about sizing and fitting, but in this case, it's just right for me (since I did only small rides til now). But you can always adapt the bike with the fitting/choice of the components (length of the stem, positioning of the saddle, height of the bars). The straggler was in my short list, but I wanted a bike as simple as possible, no hydro disc brakes, only cables, and cables as short as possible (so I chose the downtube levers).

Dream build? A dream build to me, and I'm sure many would agree, is a bike with the best, or close to the best, bicycle parts. No disc brakes, no tubeless system, no fast actuation shifters; why?!?!?!?! Those are the basics for a gravel bike yet you call this a dream bike. Maybe change the title to commuter bike because that's what that bike is. I'll show you a dream gravel bike once my frame has been custom painted. The only thing I like about this video is the color of the frame.
@GuidolineMinivan
@GuidolineMinivan 4 жыл бұрын
Hey man: if we had all the same fantasies, wouldn't the life be boring? Some dream of custom paint, and hydro disc brakes with ice technology, tubeless shit and so on. Others - like me for instance - want a durable, confortable bike, capable of being abused on rough terrain. I chose every component with that in mind. You think your di2 rig will hold on kyrgiz terrain ? In fact, your dream is a nightmare to me: too much technology! This is killing the diy scene. Remember to have your own dreams - not the (expensive) ones of the (carbon) bike industry. But ok - send me a picture of your dream bike - with the same color as mine ;)
