It's hard to believe that we've lived in our house for 6 years. The front entry and closet haven't been touched since we've been here, so we think it's time to give them a functional makeover!

Declutter Your Home in 15 Minutes a Day Course: cli.re/Course
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO COURSES:
Take Your House Back is hosted with three of us, myself, Dana from A Slob Comes Clean and Cas from Clutterbug. We talk big picture about how to declutter and focus a lot of attention on working through obstacles like sentimental items, unsupportive family members and other hang-ups. This course is FUN, there is a lot of involvement from all three of us and the ideas are specific to those who haven't been successful in the past.
Ideal for those who have been decluttering for a long time with little success and those looking for more community and support.
In the Declutter Your Home in 15 Minutes a Day course we go through the workbook, breaking down specific areas of your home in detail to be able to declutter faster and with more confidence. If you want to know specifics (like how many of each thing to keep) this course is for you.

Our main shoe/boot/jacket space for our children was at our back door. Every so often, we’d tweak the hooks or buy new shoe racks to reflect the number and size of our children. Now that we’re down to only three at home, I have the most beautiful wood set up, thanks to my son, the handyman. My biggest regret is not being able to have such a gorgeous setup when we had all the children living here.

Why is this so much better than other videos? So many home decor, etc videos are from these gynormous, millionaire houses. But this is just a normal house. So thank you! Totally relatable and I can implement so many of these things in my home. And that 3-step advice is genius. Declutter, organize, maintain
@lisapoulsen5452
@lisapoulsen5452 2 жыл бұрын
You’re so right, maintenance is the most important part. Because, if something isn’t working, you can’t maintain it. If it IS working, maintenance doesn’t take that long. And each new season of life, we have different needs. Once the boys can reach the higher hooks, you can can revisit the system🥰

... If only there was some magic word I could say to get my husband to do the DIY! 🤣 I usually just snap and end up making a bodge job of everything myself - instead of waiting months for him to do it - after watching a youtube tutorial, naturally! 😂 I have surprised myself a couple of times though, maintaining our vacuum (filters etc) and the washer (draining the pump & emptying the coin trap). I know it's basic stuff, but it was new to me. I can already decorate, garden, cook, clean and then some, but Hubby has actual qualifications for various trades. I'm like c'mon! I don't make you wait a month for dinner / sew up a rip / spellcheck or translate something - maybe that's where I'm going wrong 😂
@NBush-nz8ph

@@HannahRainbow88 "I don't make you wait a month for dinner" 😂. Thing is, you all want to keep up with Tom, and it's not possible. Tom's unconscious is like the new Harry Potter game that's coming out. A depth of wisdom, and then some. Even the camera angles are good on his channel, too! Good for you for doing your family DIY though; maybe unplug the oven and see how fast hubby stands 😂. Light and love.

@@NBush-nz8ph nope, I literally want my Hubby to fix simple things like replace a tap washer when the dripping STARTS to drive me crazy, coz he is a qualified plumber. ... @@HannahRainbow88 I'm not able to do either, but am not qualified in anything so fantastic. With that said, I don't understand people who don't take care of theirs homes - it is an extension of them. This looks so good! I'm wanting to organize our entry closet but I think we're just going to completely remove it, instead. Our entry way is really small and while I know it's nice to hide things, I think we will like having the bigger space, especially when moving furniture and having guests coming in the front door. They won't have to finagle their way around the door and the stairs just to get in.😆

SUGGESTION, if I may: Instead of everyone's hat being in the same bin, everyone's gloves in the same bin - why not buy 4 more of the clear bins and assign one to each kid. They can keep all their stuff in their bin instead of rummaging through multiple bins to locate a hat, mittens, etc. I would all label a hook for each kid for their jackets. On the other narrow wall, shelves could be installed for more bins for more organization. Just a thought.

I love seeing you make the updates to the house! We bought a 90's home so it was all golden oak, including the doors, cabinets, trim, and crown molding. It is all white now and we love it! I feel like it really never ends with a house, but it's fun to see the refreshing changes! Speaking of refreshing changes, I want to brag on my hubs for a minute! I came home yesterday and he was cleaning out the downstairs the garage! He was on a roll, and he filled a flatbed trailer! WHAT?! He said "I have dad's letterman jacket. (his dad passed away quite suddenly a couple of years ago) He never lettered in sports or anything. Do you think he would be mad if I got rid of it? You know what, I love you dad, it's gone." I was so proud of him for letting go of something that he could have attached his emotions to and made it a sentimental thing. He even got totes organized so all of his hunting stuff is no longer crowding up the upstairs garage and scattered everywhere. And I will say that I think a big motivator has been that we are staying in our camper a lot recently, and we have found that we don't need a lot of stuff there. It's not overrun with inventory, and we don't need a lot of extra gadgets. We make do with what we have and it works great and it so freeing!

So nice and fresh, and what I love so much is that it inspires you to fall in love all over again with the space you currently have. The future will tell, the house move is its own big adventure, but it is such an affirmation of love for your current life that you make things work better right on site. That is the cure for acquisitiveness - the feeling of sufficiency and that is a giant stride towards happiness. So great to see it in action!

Looks great! I can't wait to see it when it's done! I wish we had a closet in our entryway (our laundry/mudroom), but there's not room for one. We just have hooks and a freestanding shoe rack - not my cricket preference! I like the hat hooks you guys put in, so maybe we'll add that to our mudroom/laundry room. Hubby wears hats all the time, and I do when kayaking or working outside in the summer. Today (Sunday) we are resting after getting back from our son's high school graduation in Hershey yesterday. We are having a party for him next weekend, so I'm hoping to do a quick tidy and make some decorations with my best friend using my cricut. The good news is that all of the stuff from our trip is washed and put away! Thanks to the TYHB course it was easy! That course has made a world of difference in our home! 😍

I love the changes you’re making to your closet, it seems that it’s going to be so much more functional for you. And it looks nice! This weekend I am getting started on deep cleaning the woodwork in our upstairs and downstairs hallways to get them prepared for repainting next month. We have a lot of woodwork in the hallways (15 doorways and doors, 2 railings with 60 spindles, stairs, and trim) so I know it’s going to take me a while to get to all of it so that’s why I’m starting a month early. Wish me luck! Lol

I see you have a garden stuff bin I just saw a video from MIGardener (here on YT) and he said put a mailbox in your garden for small hand tools, gloves, string etc. and when you take items out put the flag up so when your done if the flag is up you know you left tools somewhere..... I thought it was a great idea and wanted to share. Have a great weekend (putting up the pool)!!!!!!

Bifold doors could be a happy compromise between French doors or sliding doors. Alternatively, curtains could be used to close off the closet when people arrive. It looks great as it is. I'm sure all those extra hooks will be put to good use! :)

Bifold doors tend to come off the tracks as well...or at least can. Curtains to me (only my opinion) seem to be less permanent and feel more like a renter hack or just not as finished as doors. The great thing is we can all use what solutions we like and can afford at the time and everything can be changed.

I love love how you talked through your process. We took our front hall with no closet open hooks ( butterfly) as empty nesters made a ladybug closet in the space. So it turned into a Monica closet it’s the black hole space in the house….but resale on house will be better…🙃 seemed like a good idea til we did it. Somehow brooms and randomness crawled in there!

I’m in the U.K. We have a long narrow hallway with two doors on one side that lead into the lounge/dining room. But have no cupboards or storage space in the hall and no room to even have a shoe rack. 😭 So we have to put all the coats and shoes in the downstairs toilet which means we can’t use it as a bathroom. You did a great job with yours.

I wish my hubby was motivated to do projects like Tom is. He prefers fishing! 😄 Not able to clean house or declutter as I had a neck fusion surgery 10 days ago. 🙃 I'm going to try to hitch a ride with my son and his family to watch my granddaughter play softball! She has 2 games today. It's too soon to drive yet. Good luck with the French doors. They'll look beautiful! Love your videos!

Our 1956 small ranch had 4 closets with original sliding doors, a requirement for us was to replace ALL with (solid) French doors. It took our handyman a few months to get them in, but during that time the easy access was nice to determine true functionality. Love LOVE opening both doors and being able to see and access ALL the closet areas at once.

I appreciate that you style your storage based on your lifestyle and life stage. Example: kid stuff on the right so as not to interfere w front door. Or lower hooks for smaller kids. Reality is that your new closet can be easily adjusted while everyone grows and you won’t break the bank! Great approach, well done!

I think it’s actually better to live in a space and learn what works and what doesn’t and how it functions. In my previous home we remodeled the kitchen after living there 10 years so I knew exactly how I wanted the space to work! I wasn’t able to do that in my current home and needed the kitchen totally remodeled and boy do I wish I could go back and make different decisions!

I'd love to see a garage organizing video since Tom is a handyman! I feel like everyone who has a nice organized garage does not have a husband who does it all..so they dont have a million tools for home projects, car maintenance, etc....

Instead of french doors, you could hang drapes with metal rings (hidden from the inside) that could easily be pulled aside and back - won't interfere with your front door, and a lot cheaper :D. Love all the hooks, perfect for kids.

We do have quita a big entry way. We have many closets with french doors but then we built a wardrobe with hooks just on the wall for the kids where they can put their everyday jackets and hats since they never put them back in the closet. Sometime you have to ajust your system 🤷🏻‍♀️

Aw you guys are so cute tackling projects together. This week we put up a used trampoline and used swingset for our kids. I waited and waited to find the one I wanted and kept reminding myself about the kids only need swings and a slide so you said get a cheap used one. I'm so happy I did because although this was a pricer used swingset it's perfect for us. So this weekend they can enjoy them while I try to finish getting garden planted the first time.
