In the fifth episode of season 1 of Dream of Italy (on PBS), travel to Piedmont - the land of truffles and wine. Host Kathy McCabe tries to get truffle hunters Natale and Giorgio Romagnolo to reveal their secret hunting grounds, then tastes the precious white truffles they find. Then it is time to attend the World Truffle Auction where the bidding gets frenzied for these rare tubers. We visit Cascina Bruciata vineyard to learn about the hearty Barolo, Barbaresco and Barbera wines that are produced in Piedmont. Piedmont is also home to hot springs and Kathy goes to Lago delle Sorgenti to find out about the unique medicinal qualities of these baths. We also visit Lake Iseo in the region of Lombardy to see fine Italian boat making - from masters big and small - at Riva yachts and a small fishing boat maker on Monte Isola. I was born 30minutes from Iseo and I have been guiding over there for the first part of my life as a guide. Thank you for the beautiful episode.

I like how one of the dogs hunting for truffles in the forest is named Diana: Roman goddess of forests and hunting. Very appropriate.

Thank you, Chris! I may or may not buy anything, but I am dreaming (albeit very slowly right now) and part of such a wonderfully positive group of people. Thank you for all you do and all your time. I appreciate every single moment of it! There is a place in heaven for you for taking such good care of all of us!

Alessandro Poeta I was lucky enough to have a lovely girl from the region live with me for a year as an exchange student. Once when we were visiting I commented to her, “You never told me how beautiful it is here.” She replied, “I didn’t think you would believe me!” I love the country and the people, and of course we’re going back in a few weeks. We are so lucky to have great friends in Italy.

Does anyone notice how people always smile in these videos? The chefs are friendly and so engaging. I traveled all over Italy, and found Italians to be some of the friendliest people in the world.

as an Italian, I was told by a professor that if you say something, you can say it with a smile to make the other person comfortable. I think it creates a loop effect as smiling actually make you relaxed and happy - the thing is is that all the smiles are real and not fake. I am living abroad, and it is quite odd to me how foreigner do not smile as much - like they are a bit closed off. It is a tiny collective effort that makes everybody's life better.

I like the programs in the series very much. But I'm confused by something in this episode: you said you had to stay behind because the truffle hunters didn't want you to see their secret spot for truffles . . .but the camera crew can go and film everything? That didn't make sense. Was there some other reason they wouldn't let you go?

Perhaps the lady knows the places and knows other Italian truffle hunters ... The fear is that you let escape a few words on the site where they find truffles, probably the cameramen do not know the places, the language, the people, or those films is friend of truffles hunters :) Ciao!

Documentaries do stuff like that all the time for dramatic effect. Throughout this series she randomly meets people on the street, but in reality they were probably scouted first by agents months in advance, and signed contracts giving PBS permission to film them. Like how in wildlife documentaries, the polar bears they show "giving birth under the ice" are actually different ones being filmed in a zoo.

Perdonami, but for the sake of all things sacred (truffles are very, very sacred), no one should be allowed to bid on these truffles unless they are actually in the room where the auction is being held. Beyond this, this was an ego acquisition for the ultimate buyers and nothing more. They were drawn to the auction because its global popularity and the badge of affluence it could gain for them. They utterly lack the capability of understanding the physical and mystical complexity - the full reality - of the truffle, not to mention that their palates are devoid of the sophistication to taste the full spectrum of its flavors and aromas. The people holding this auction should be embarrassed for so obviously prostituting themselves for the sake for money alone. Shame on them!

The West has such a trade deficit compared to Asia: if someone from China wants to give Italy €100,000 for a truffle, let them.

When will you understand that the mandolin has nothing to do with Northern Italy, for example with Piedmont? It's annoying and offensive, like hearing sirtaki during a documentary about Switzerland.
