Dream of Italy

6 жыл бұрын

Deep in the south of Italy, the region of Basilicata is timeless and otherworldly. It is home to one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, Matera, a city of caves. Hollywood Director Francis Ford Coppola introduces host Kathy McCabe to his ancestral hometown of Bernalda and talks about how he rediscovered his Italian roots and opened a hotel here. Kathy digs for clams on the coast, learns to make mozzarella with a very special treat inside and learns about the difficult past of this beautiful land. Plus much more… For more information, visit www.dreamofitaly.com

I have a lot of ancestors that came from this region. My great-grandparents came from this region (Potenza), my grandma spoke either Gallo-Italic or the Naples dialect. I intend on visiting my family that live in this region still. :)

My Fathers people are from Maratea on the coast, north west of here. Unfortunately because of the abject poverty of the area and times, he emigrated to Australia, and thankful for everything a lifetime of hard work she has given me and my family. As Mr Coppola shows, when I visit my extended family in Maratea there’s something magical in this region, it’s living history.....

The funny thing is anyone living in Basilicata today, lives a much more tranquil life compared to any offspring from those that left Basilicate many decades ago. Quality of life should not depend on one's riches and fortune, but rather their contribution to the society they live in. The butcher helps the mechanic, the baker helps butcher, the plumber helps the carpenter, the carpenter helps the wine maker. And together everyone lives in harmony. The tourists make up the difference in dividend !

If you need a reason for initiating an effort to begin or strengthen an academic program in Italian studies at a university here it is. At times it seemed that the commentator was talking to an audience of fifth graders so the content of her contribution needs to be improved greatly. The geography with maps holds the program together. More sections of the region should have been covered. Views of cities from street level were good. Tell us more about the content of cities other than bakeries. There was enough academic content to make the series go further and stand on its own cultural feet, but do not make the message be directed to fifth graders. I am not sure if the commentator is saying enough of serious content to sustain the attention of educated adult audience members. This series did bring to the attention of viewers a part of Italy often is hidden from sight or knowledge. For one thing this is authentic Italy and not Venice. It is important that aspects of contemporary Italy are on view here. References to episodes of earlier times are not inevitable. Reference to the book by Carlo Levi was important and necessary. Showing the animals was essential. Do not try to masquerade this part of Italy as an extension of Venice or Florence. Reference to earlier immigration from Basilicata would be necessary. Show a chronology time table for reference. Comments about current population trends and demographics would be educational. What are the local universities doing to promote this region? Economic growth in comparison to recent times? Are younger people staying or leaving? More content the better.

In fairness, almost all American television is written like the audience is about 12 years old, including the news. Books have been written in Europe about how the tendency of American media to assume the audience is stupid actually has the effect of reducing Americans' tendency to think critically.

'In fairness' - not sure about that statement. That doesn't justify the condescending tone of this video. Lucky I had interest enough in the area to hang in there. It looks like it was made in 1962 (before my father immigrated to Australia).

You think too much, Italy is and always has been for living in the moment, not to say that I do agree with some of your statement....

This is where my people hail from. We have landed in Pittsburgh Pa, but hail from the Basilicatta Region of Italia(Tthe Motherland). My dad's cousin Johnny when he was in the army visited "HOME". He said we were straight up mountain people. FYI my brother's kids names are ROCCO, GENO, and ENZO. LOL I don't give "dammi un cuzo"(give a fuck) in Italian what anyone says, our cuisine is far and away the best in the free world...

Just wish the narrator spoke even a little bit of Italian. She butchers everything she says and when her guests don't speak English, there's no sensible dialogue (like the guy with the pigs). At least learn how to say "Grazie" instead of "Graziaaayy". Yikes 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️🙄
