Roasted maple neck with Stainless frets is my new obsession. I got my first one on my ibanez az bocote 2402 and im never going back to nickle frets ever again. FYI im doing a partscaster build but Im using a nitro sprayed body off reverb - that way you can get some of your own relic mojo - im building on right now same body color, but nitro finish and HSS in daphene blue :) gonna be so sick... planning on bareknuckle jugg in the bridge, and bareknuckle singles, gotoh 510 bridge with gotoh magnum lock - and a custom fender waterslide logo, with my own waterslide on the back :). Im having bareknuckle prebuild the whole pickguard with elec. and aging - all together im at like $1500.00 but im going premium everything, pickups alone were $450. BEtter than any fender Custom shop build hopefully... i got inspired by seeing misha's jackson blue strat dj0nt machine.

The chances of getting a neck with no fret sprout and leveled properly from warmoth are slim to none. They obviously knew it was being reviewed. I have ordered seven warmoth necks and every single one needed fretwork, four of them needed major work. I’m not bashing them it is just something they don’t generally do. To be fair they don’t claim to either.
@cristianosmiranda4 жыл бұрын
So, you had all those issues but did not speak to them at all about it? You should return the first neck and all of them right away explaining the reason and I believe they would do something about it, because it is one of their main business. Did you not think about out?

I don’t understand people who go out of their way to say the neck, the wood, and other changes other than pickups don’t influence the tone. If that were true then you could take Fender pickups, put them in a Gibson, and it would sound the same. Ridiculous. Even the Fender Custom Shop folks say the neck changes the tone. I changed the nut, bridge saddles, and string trees on mine and that had a very significant effect on the tone. Thank you for demonstrating the very clear difference here. I bought a Squier Bullet in a thrift shop two years ago, and I totally agree with you about it being a good place to start on modifying a guitar to better than you could get for $1000 or more. The only original parts left on mine are the neck, body, and tremolo minus the bridge saddles. I’m planning on replacing the neck in the next month or two and then I think I’m done making changes to this guitar. Thanks again for demonstrating that the neck replacement isn’t just eye candy.
@ccchicken88894 жыл бұрын
Looks, tone, and I'm sure feel...that's a big win all around! I think of the neck as the heart of the instrument, so mods like this are fun to see. I'd recommend the Hot Rails neck pickup to top it all off. It's great paired with the bridge model. It has a fuller, juicier tone that splits well. You would possibly do a 4 pole 5 way switch (or called dual wafer) upgrade at the same time. Thn you could wire it in so many different ways for the ultimate in tone choices.
@shredhed5724 жыл бұрын
I too think the neck plays at least 50% of the tone. That estimate is prolly a low one. I have even found that (IMO) the size/mass of the headstock plays a big part as well. My fave strat w/70s hs and home made 1984 guitar with the huge phallic headstock both give them a super lively tone. If that makes sense. On the roasted M N: I just got my first one on a charvel, and I have to say, at first, when I got it home I thought the tone of the guitar was glassy. But with playing it in the tone is improving. Or seems to be imo lol.

I love my Warmoth tele neck. Unfinished roasted maple with dark Indian rosewood fingerboard, SS 6105 frets. Highly recommend the 59 neck profile if you want a neck that is just a bit chunky. I will say though that the frets were not perfectly level (they were close though) and fingerboard edges were not super smooth when it arrived. I ended up doing a very slight fret level, just kissing the frets with leveling beam and then crowned and polished. I rolled the finger board edges and did a bit of fret dressing too. With a little love it now feels much more "broken in" and smooth to play.

i recently refretted a 250 euro Vintage brand telecaster with dunlop 6000 size frets which completely transformed the guitar, it sounded great before, one of my favourite guitars, but the frets were super used, the jumbo frets has made the guitar absolutely incredible while keeping the same sort of tone given the cost of refretting i considered buying a new neck, but i loved the shape of the neck and the sound of the guitar, so refret was the way to go, it sounds a bit crazy in terms of investment but if you have a great guitar that you love and can improve the playability, why not the neck change here definitely changed the tone, tbh i preferred the tone of the original neck, bit warmer, more midrange, subdued highs, you can probably make up a bit of that difference with pickup height/tone adjustments, depends what you're after changing the bridge/tremolo block makes a nice difference as well

I've never had a Warmoth neck that didn't need additional prep work on the frets but that's half the fun...spending time with the craft to get those frets hot dog'd just the way I like though I know some players prefer a more pronounced fret end. I also take the shank of a screwdriver and roll it over to bend the fingerboard edges for that "been played for 20 years" feel. Once that's done and all frets are leveled, dressed, etc....it will transform just about any guitar built with a parts bin neck. On a related note for some of the questions below, Warmoth will actually warranty their roasted necks with no finish. As a result, you can order one without adding a gloss or satin finish to it, keeping the price down a bit. Although gloss would really make the flame pop, for me, I loathe gloss neck finishes because it feels like my hand is moving across a pitcher's rosin bag. Play those roasted right out of the box as is, no finish required.

Hey soul henge ! Your videos yes YOUR videos mainly are way I happily pulled a trigger on a warmoth neck that honestly might be exactly like yours a few months ago, now that its complete I have some pressing questions about my neck (this is my first strat style build) and the neck is where the business end happens I think you can agree it has to be just right! Anyhow here goes why I chose the neck amd the Q's that follow : . I've always played some form of a shreddy or standard C shape and a BIT rounder/wider etc than further on the large side and it's too uncomfortable so with this one I went with *standard thin* . Heres where my string spacing may or may not come into play . I went with was the gibson esque one *1-3/4ths 44mm* because I can NOT *take* to any neck that has a string spacing where the low e and high e feel like they slip off the board! I've moved high end guitars in the past fast when I figured out they came that way sadly! . Now the big thing I found with the warmoth standard thin profile is that it's only *thin in terms of its depth* And *wide on the shoulders* definitely feels different from your average fender C shape. . Now this wide feeling may just feel exaggerated to me because of the nut I chose but I really researched this before hand and it seems any other option on that list had the risk to make the strings slip on the fretboard ends, so now that problem definitely cannot happen! But now I'd say my strat almost feels like a les paul or an acoustic. (I know you're thinking at this point where's the man's question already lol) . SO what's your experience with the neck like this ? Would you leave it as is, get used to it , for atleast a month? After all originally I got what I wanted which was no damn e string slippage🤙 . Or should I just go to a local custom luthier near me to shave down the shoulders on the roasted maple neck a bit ? Maybe cut a new nut that keeps the spacing close ish on every string but the high and low E? (none open now probably cause of Corona virus lockdown so I'll be waiting a while) . Or last but not least , should I just get used to it because well I finally got the custom option that I've always wanted in the past ?! Lol. . The guitar as a whole plays phenomenally and the flame roasted maple really came out flawlessly! . I'd be interested to hear back from you whenever you have the time to write! and I'm curious about *your neck specs that you would have going on to remedy this kind of problem where you want to keep the standard thin profile with a nut width that can keep the strings from feeling slightly farther apart* but *not too far where it starts to feel like an acoustic guitar* . I'll entertain any ideas and hope you get this msg soon. Stay safe and healthy in your part of the world and cheers from Niagara falls Canada 🙏😊🤟 - Adam

I definitely hear a difference, though I would speculate it's actually a combination of all the things discussed below; the roasted maple has a very different density/internal structure (for lack of a better term on my part), and it weighs a lot less. Then you have the stainless frets, again, they have some affect, how much is speculative, and finally new strings. He says the strings used on the 'original neck' recording are not that old or much played, but I've found even so they sound different from ones straight out of the pack. When put next to the obviously bright new strings on the Warmoth, I suspect there's a difference. Add it all up, and it makes (to me) a definite perceivable difference... Better? Always subjective, but to my ears, it sounds a little brittle & glassy; though once the strings break in and lose that new string sparkle, it might balance out... I recently tried a roasted maple/stainless frets neck on a solid spruce body (weird, right? Spruce?) which supposedly has a very inherent low frequency tone, akin to mahogany or perhaps basswood, and balanced with the baked maple and ss frets it was fantastic! Excellent balance of highs and lows, great sounding guitar. That's what I love about guitars; like girls, they each have a distinct and complex personality, and a unique beauty all their own...

I've done bunch of builds before and it's great when ti turns out that you do love the end product. But the negative when you do not is that you cannot easily recover your investment like you do with a second hand guitar. So for example, you buy say a used usa fender for a decent price. You can probably sell it for the same or maybe lose 10 to 15% if you're in a hurry to sell. But when you build you will likely lose upwards to 35%+. Just a word of caution on the financial side of things. I love my builds and just keep em forever.
