Wow thank you so much for such a rare find. It is so cool to hear their demos and how they evolved into the final version of the songs. I really liked this version as well as many other demos that have different parts to the recorded album one. It has more of an early 90's feel, which I really like and brings memories as a kid when we got a Yamaha Keyboard at home around 91. This really brings so much nostalgia. Thanks :)

In a recent Drumeo video Mike Portnoy mention this demo. He says that the drum machine part was written by Moore and Mike eventually took the basic beat to create drum intro and other parts of the song.

This is probably the rarest thing DT related thing I've ever saw/listened. Also, where did you find all those pictures?! Some of them seem quite rare!
@DTArchive Жыл бұрын
A surprising number of the pics are actually just out of the Score Documentary. The "Gorilla Session" on my channel is also pretty rare. I don't know of too many people who have the full version of that. The most commonly circulating version is incomplete.

I'll also say that I've been building up an arsenal of magazine articles about Dream Theater. Those often prove to have rare photos in them.

I wonder if this is the version MP was referring to in the drumeo vid

The bass part sounds like MIDI/VST instead of an actual bass played by Myung.
@acidrums4Күн бұрын
I don't think this is the very same demo Portnoy talked about at Drumeo. Either he heard it only after Myung laid the bass track or this is out from some jam with Moore and Myung after they socialized it. There are several Portnoy-isms in the drum track already; either this was at a stage where they were adding their own swing to the general structure or Moore knew Portnoy's stye too damn well - and he might be a great drummer himself too.

Thanks for sharing this. There used to be a clinic with Petrucci from Helsinki in 1998 on KZbin, but it's gone. I don't suppose you have it?

@@DTArchive oh no. Ive seen that one. At the start of the 1998 Helsinki clinic John shreds as a warm up and then says to turn down the light cause it's bright. Cause of the camera it looks like he might be wearing a dark red or black t shirt and earth brown jeans with the P4 Ibanez

LOL CAN U IMAGINE IF MIKE PLAYED THIS UNDERWHELMING ASS VERSION OF THE BEAT INSTEAD OF THE ICONIC DRUMBEAT IN THE BEGINNING OF THIS SONG
@rogerpollard Жыл бұрын
In my opinion, the biggest reasons to suspect this is fake are: (1) The music is harmonically, melodically, and rhythmically exactly the same as the final version we know now. If this was some early demo without guitar or vocals added, surely it would have had some changes from normal creative development as they worked on the song. (2) It’s all MIDI with zero dynamic variation. The bass is clearly MIDI, and all MIDI notes are of equal velocity, implying that this was created on a computer, not played by performers. I’m not saying it’s impossible that it’s real, but I think someone made this on their computer using cheap MIDIs. If it is a demo they used back in the day, it was probably still made on a computer using cheap MIDIs.
@DTArchive Жыл бұрын
I agree there's a possibility of it being fake, but I don't agree that there are no harmonic, melodic, or rhythmic differences from the final version. For example, the iconic opening drum fill is missing, and solo section at 2:42 is different from the final version. I thought it sounded MIDI-like at first too, but the bass sounds a little too nuanced to my ears to be MIDI. For example, slides like you hear around 2:32 tend not to work well with MIDI.

You might be right about the bass. There are some places that sound like it could be real.

Portnoy basically confirmed that this is real in the Drumeo video he did for 6:00. He mentioned a Kevin Moore demo of the song with a similar drum beat to the finalized song.
@vinniewannabe1 Жыл бұрын
So, you are trying to say Kevin Moore wrote the drum parts more or less? Did Mike P make it a habit of copying the drum parts from the demo's? I'm asking. It is almost note for note.

Yes Mike admit it, it was Kevin piece, and Mike just perfected it
