Have you ever heard about Keith Emerson? Richard Wright? Wakeman? Lord? I mean, I love the wizard Jordan, but in the 70's there was lots of keyboardists playing better than this, and on top of everything they were high on drugs. ps: I don't mean to sound rude, this just my opinion, and I respect yours. cheers.

EXACTLY! I've been saying that exact thing for so long except for the controller part, which is a great analogy. A clean(er) tone conveys so much more. You can go to the other extreme with B.B. King, who adds nothing but a bit of reverb. There's so much character and feel (not feelING) to the playing that he can make one note sound like lightning with a bit of vibrato. There are a few exceptions... like two-handed tapping, which sounds best with tons of gain... you get almost a wah effect.
