Sorry but the only thing good about James is that he was a staple. Bands who constantly change their vocalists never do well. Other than that, I despise his voice. He had to scream to get to the high notes, could only really hit them in studio. And when he’s screaming, you can’t understand wtf he’s saying.

Holy mother of god Labrie is INCREDIBLE here. Seriously, 1992 Labrie is the greatest metal vocalist of ALL TIME. I would give my left nut to go back in time and see this concert. Imagine discovering DT in 1992 at this show... My mind was blown in 2005, so I can only imagine how it would have felt a decade earlier when prog metal was truly new and Labrie was in god mode... amazing

I saw DT for the first time when I was 17 about a week after this show in MN. First time seeing them and knew nothing about them. It was as incredible as you might imagine. My doors were blown WIDE open. James sounded this good and it was the first time I’d ever seen musicians at this level live. Absolute insanity.

@@spudfella4937 LaBrie is one of my favorite vocalists. I would say that he had some good contemporaries. The singer from Steelheart and Sebastian Bach are definitely two. I’m excited for Portnoy’s return. I’ve been a big fan of Mangini since the late 90s, so I hardly got into the whole “Mike vs. Mike” controversy. I love both drummers for different reasons. Mangini’s work with DT was absolutely incredible, but Portnoy brought a sauce to the music that cannot be denied.

Wrong. He got food poisoning and ruptured his vocal cords from throwing up. He's still had great performances since then. It's just a hit or miss thing, these days.

@@VHDT10 I say this as a longtime Dream Theater fan. While I of course accept that the food poisoning incident happened and that it messed him up, I think it's not as relevant as people think it is to the topic of his performance. I think the issues people have with his performance were present years prior. You can see it in the Live in Tokyo video and other recordings from this same tour. He's always been inconsistent live with the high notes, and when he tries to sound gritty/screamy it doesn't sound that appealing. He has a great voice and a great range (his audition tape for the band is insane) but I think it's best when he just sings clean and doesn't try to put on a lot of attitude or melodrama. I'm sure the food poisoning didn't help but I don't think it's the cause of a lot of the criticism.

I saw them on this tour when I was 16 in Grand Rapids. This is why people fell in love with Dream Theater just as grunge was taking over (unfortunately). They sounded every bit this good. LaBrie was on point. He had the exact range and most importantly tone quality that they needed and none of the other singers had. Plus, who can forget Kevin Moore and his cool Jacket with the chains on the arms that he wore on the images and words album photo. Great Job Dream Theater, nobody can take this performance and the ones we saw just like it back then away from you!

Thanks for reminding me of the name :) There were so many cool clubs/bars back then - Sparks, Spit, CPI, a place in Deer Park I forgot the name of (played a lot of industrial), and a place in Nassau by the beach haha. And of course, Limelight in the city. 90's were the best.

Saw them some days later in Montreal 8 Oct. 92 and 9.Oct.92 in Toronto . The Montreal Gig was in a small venue called „Club Soda“. During the set I must leave the concert to get the greyhound bus to toronto for the second gig !The next day I was lucky enough to talk to Mike Portnoy and get autographs from the band. The funny thing was that he noticed that someone has left the concert before the ending .😂

All the singers love aeee haha its the best belting vowel, in the learning to live high note he also goes with aaeee. As time went by, he used more and more aeee, i guess because he couldnt handle more difficult vowels anymore.

Definitely... I&W and Awake era had the best guitar tones for DT I'd say. Heavier stuff like Train of Thought and Systematic Chaos was great on the rhythm tone too in a different way. But this era had that classic "Black Album" Metallica Mesa Boogie tone that is purring like a V8 engine haha...

Love it but you can tell that even then Labrie was pushing beyond his comfort zone in hitting those higher notes and that shredded his vocal chords for years ahead.... Maybe different technique/training would've helped but I think it was probably just trying to out-do Dominici who had a naturally higher pitched voice (a bit like a Jon Anderson type sound thinking about it). Glad Labrie is sounding great again nowadays as far as I know.

I think you are spot on here. The food poisoning incident definitely accelerated what was already starting to show by shows in ‘93 and ‘94. They needed more breaks but being relatively underground then meant tour and release albums or die. Maybe finding a vocal coach around this time could have staved it off. It will definitely be a big what if. That said, holy shit what an insane range he had at this time.
