It seems to be a trend that if a band has been around for 30+ years, literally ANYTHING they put out after that will be nitpicked and criticized for every minor detail. The fans will dribble on about how they'll never get to their glory days again and how the band is over. I wouldn't doubt that if Dream Theater had released Scenes From a Memory now instead of in 1999, the fans would have nitpicked and gone on about how it's lame and Dream Theater is over. It doesn't matter how good Dream Theater's new music is, the fans will tear it apart. That's just a theory though.

+KingdomofSmileys Rush doesn';t have that problem, Devin Townsend neither. What they (DT) really had to do, was just to stay creative.
@KingdomofSmileys8 жыл бұрын
onimusha13 GamesinaBit Rush is my favorite band, and I am an active member on their fan forums. Maybe it's just the forums, but the general consensus is that the last 3 Rush albums are bad, and anything new Rush does is instantly nitpicked and criticized to shreds. Clockwork Angels is hated by MANY of the fans, especially those who followed them in the 70s. I don't share that opinion, but Rush does have that problem unfortunately.
@TheBushwooky8 жыл бұрын
+KingdomofSmileys It happens with every band. It's also one thing to not like there new stuff, but the people that piss me off the most are the ones that accuse the band of "selling out"....like, if they listened to the fans for every album THAT would be selling out. Writing what they want despite what the fans think of their music is the opposite of selling out. Hell just look at Opeth....I'm sure the fans would have loved them to keep releasing more Blackwater Parks but no...the band did what IT wanted. Not what the fans wanted.

@23-infinitymusic468 жыл бұрын
+CodeStation I see you trying to adopt this edgy, philosophical kind of thinking. Yes, I understand it's impossible to objectively say 'absolutely with no doubt' but come on mate, listen to this shit. Really listen to it. Compare and contrast to earlier works. There is nothing new here. In the past, each album was different in sound to the next. I&W > Awake > FII etc etc. Now, since ADTOE, it's just the same sound from disc to disc. Not very progressive!

23-Infinity There is no try. (j/k, wanking philosophically) Here's the thing: I miss the fuck out of Mike Portnoy. When he was in the band every album had a magic that I do not hear any longer. Is that my own confirmation bias? How could I tell? But there is something else. I don't hear ADTOE in this, and the self-titled album was - in my experience - a departure of its own. I would like to hear someone try something in this genre with electric guitar not double-tracked and panned wide; something maybe with no cymbals and vocals with only three note choices (octaves allowed) while riding a unicycle wearing nothing but condoms and flaming bikini tops. I think that would be quite progressive. But then someone could attack what I like and say, "oh it's just a gimmick, it's not *real* music" (or the equivalent). Music has zero practical value. You can't build anything with it. Trying to apply objective standards to it is useless; and measurement of its value in any sense can only come from creating arbitrary systems (12 TET, or Japanese Kumoi, etc.). It appears one *can* build community with music; happy experiences, convey a sense of wonder and tell stories. We music fans, you and I; I think we like these things in music. TL;DR in what way is it rehashed? What specifically sounds just like ADTOE? And if they changed it, would it then no longer be Dream Theater? I'm with you in the sense I'd love to hear them do something ridiculously obtuse and, frankly, non-publishable. I'd like them to give the record company something that makes the executives cry in terror.

@@DanielGonzalezC Cool. To me, it's the only DT album I can see myself selling or give away (but I like to have the complete discography). Because, nah, I like DT mostly for their progressive side. This album had progressive elements few and far between. They used the same cheesy melodies over and over again - which ofcourse made sense, storywise. And it's just that - the story was cheesy as hell imo. Cringeworthy. And I really wanted to like this album. But it made a huge dent in the DT ride I'd enjoyed for so long. Thankfully they rose to greatness again afterwards ("must be fun for them to create and play progressive rock again", I thought to myself after hearing the Distance Over Time album). Everything is forgiven. :) But hey, I'm cool with you loving it it. Ofcourse. To each his own. :)

There are a lot of Portnoy’s widows and I don't understand them. I miss him too, but Mangini is amazing. And James LaBrie is phenomenal, he had an unique and recognizable voice. His voice made the characteristic DT sound. I don't understand the critics against him, there is no living vocalist better him, but only maestro Jeff Lynne (and he creates a different kind of music). The entire band is astonishing and they have nothing to prove! Enjoy their music!

People should not judge the whole album on this one song alone. Its all right to hate on this, that's your opinion after all, but let's not give prejudice to the album and instead talk after we heard all the songs. DT probably release singles based on accessibility or being a stand-alone type of piece, but keep in mind, this is concept album so songs depend on each other to bring context to the listener. Hope you all consider hearing the album from start to finish before hating on it.

***** Ditto. When I saw the link on reddit from the Eddie Trunk Show, I honestly thought this would be like The Enemy Inside where I forced myself to like it to condition my mind that the self-titled album was great(I only liked Illumination Theory). But when I first heard this for the very first time, chills ran down not just my spine but my whole body. It was love at first listen. I felt this would be an instant classic and it just felt right. It is just a taste, an appetizer on their most ambitious album to date. I feel The Astonishing would prove naysayers wrong and will shut up those who tell that they've lost the 'magic'. This is Dream Theater in their best form yet and we're here to witness it.

In my opinion, the point on the last DT albums is that they don't just write some music and then record it. It's all written with a purpose. BCASL was written with dark melodies so you could imagine yourself in hell as listening to A Nightmare to Remember. ADTOE was the complete opposite, with This is the Life or Breaking all illusions you could picture yourself in a dream in the sky or something. This one is written with huge orchestral arrangements, powerful war-drums because they want to write something epic. That's why I think this is just right for this album

people here got nerve to complain :'D DT pushes out an album, shares it for free and you complain? I know internet has no decensy of using brains, but even a total dim wit realises (Or I sincerely hope so) how INCREDIBLE AMOUNT OF SPENT TIME AND EFFORT the band has used, to provide YOU music. Besides, you have the option not to listen to it if you don't like it, but to disrespect it, is only something that scum would say. Some people really should try making music and undersanding how incredibly laboursome it is to come up with nice songs, and further yet, get disrespected out of it. For me this is a great piece of art, and I will support the band with what ever way am capable of.

Holy freaking shit! Listening to this with my earphones. Petrucci's riff at :50 is so cool, and then Mangini comes over the top with those double kick drums. I've been a Dream Theater fan since 1991, have seen them nine times, and have every album they've ever done. To those of you complaining, give this a chance. There's a lot to listen to here, but it will grow on you. I liken this to Fates Warning's A Pleasant Shade of Gray. On my first few listens, nothing really jumped out at me as being "the track". But the more I listen to this new album, the more I like it. It's refreshing. There's a really wide range of music here. When a band has been around as long as Dream Theater, they have to evolve, or they will collapse unto themselves. And this is evolution. It's beautiful. It's just a lot to absorb, and that's ok.
