«Another Day», from Images and Words - my favorite album of all time. Of course, I’m not COMPLETELY sure John Petrucci had a pedal steel guitar in mind for this solo - but you know… I suppose there’s that chance! 🤔 If spending an entire weekend with this is wrong - well - then I don't wanna be right!
Gear:
Dekley S10 pedal steel guitar
Goodrich L120 volume pedal
Peterson Strobostomp HD
Durham Sexdrive booster pedal
Nux Cerberus pedal board (Distortion + Drive engaged)
Fender Tone Master Twin Reverb
Sennheiser 609 microphone
Focusrite Scarlett 2i2
DAW: Cockos Reaper
By the way - feel free to check out my single, November Rain. It's on Spotify and all the other streaming platforms. Or just listen to it here on youtube: • November Rain

Honestly this is incredibly impressive. This is a challenging solo to play, and especially convey the same emotional context. You did a fantastic job of doing both, especially with the inherent limitations of pedal steel!

Thanks so much - very happy to hear you liked it! Ever since falling head over heels in love with this album in the early/mid nineties, I've spent countless hours jamming along to Dream Theater on regular electric guitar, which has been my main instrument. So I think I got a decent grasp on John Petruccis's "mannerisms" and sound. But I was never a real shredder on the guitar though. It's probably a combination of just not having the knack for it, and also some mobility problems with my pinky fingers. So I'm a bit "handicapped" on a regular guitar. And reading tabs doesn't feel very inspiring to me. On the steel guitar though, I don't have any sort of physical impairment, and that's quite a motivating thing. I suppose that's part of the reason why I dive head first into experiments like these! The main reason is the fact that I think this is a good way of exploring the neck and discovering something I hadn't thought of before. The steel works surprisingly well for many, many genres. :)
