Can you imagine you are at the concert and Mike Portnoy is maybe less than 10 meters away ? So it happened to me in 2003 ... and now he's back. I'm so happy and can't wait to see them in October. And being at the concert to the Train of Thought album we stood right in front of John Petrucci and his speakers tower. Couldn't stand it for more than 30 minutes as I didn't have no ear protection and didn't want to have a heavy tinitus next day 😆🤘

2:06 The "static" in the begining of The Glass Prision is the same of the last song of Scenes from a Memory (Finally Frewe), because they conected the albums from Scenes to Octavarium.

@julianortiz4151 3 ай бұрын
Starting with this album all the way through Octavarium, each album opens where the previous album left off. Metropolis 2: Scenes From a Memory leads into Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence which leads into Train of Thought which leads into Octavarium. Also, interesting to point out, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence was Dream Theater’s sixth album and has six tracks officially, since disc two is really one song. Train of Thought being the seventh album only has seven tracks, and Octavarium being the eighth album with 8 tracks. 😉

For me my third 4th album. Images, Awake, Metropolis part 2 and then Six Degrees. Got into Falling and Dreams and day after. Please check out Symphony X. I would say it's the closest to DT without sounding like a DT clone. It's original and is on the same level as DT. Symphony X might be a a bit heavier and more neoclassical but in a good way. Check out songs like The Devine wings of Tragedy or The Odyssey. Hope you enjoy!

Yeah, so I don’t know if you know Nick, but The Glass Prison is actually the first part of a 12 step suite might Portnoy wrote about the full struggle behind alcoholism I believe it has five songs actually six songs and each one does two steps per song. Glass prison is the first one and then I can’t remember what the second song is called, but I do know it’s track two on train of thought in the third one and fourth on Octavarium and then there’s one on systematic chaos and then the last one is on a nightmare to remember, but thankfully there has been someone that has put the entire suite together online and I would highly recommend giving it a listen all the way through because it is a masterpiece just as scenes from the memory is. But it is an absolute relief that Mike Portnoy is back in the band because Mike Mangini was nothing more than a hired gun. He didn’t actually contribute to any of the songwriting other than figuring out things to play.

The Glass Prison has a special place in my heart, it really defines me not in terms of the addiction itself, but in terms of the struggle within and how to make it through the day..... Putting that aside, the musicality, the way the song is constructed is pure power and adrenaline throughout the 13 minutes...... As you say, it's the definition of progressive metal at maximum speed...... Can't wait to see them live once again with Portnoy here in Argentina on December 19th 🇦🇷🇦🇷✨✨🔥🔥🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼 Huge hugs to you guys!!!!!!

22:35 It's funny, but actually the song starts with the bass only: You might think that there is also a guitar, but in fact, before the drums come in, all that sounds (except hissing) is John Myung's 6-string bass.

This song is a bit more rock heavy versus the music on the album Images and Words(My favorite DT album) which is IMO more progressive. I'll go back and listen to this song as I have nearly all of Dream Theatre's studio albums. It's been a while since I've listened to this album. It's a really good album and this song is really good.

Dream Theater was my very first video I saw of you more than 3 years ago and even though I'm not around too often anymore, DT is a reason for returning. I bought this album on the day it came out, being excited about the follow up of Scenes from a memory. Glass prison is an awesome song, maybe the best on this album and the scratching at the beginning is the same with which Scenes had ended, so some kind of connection between the 2 albums. This song has more power than for example the whole Astonishing album and I don't understand when people say DT of the MM era is better - We saw them on this tour, they opened with Glass Prison, we stood right in front of Mike Portnoy ... it blew us away. Even though they had Pain of Salvation opening they played for more than 2 and a half hours and we felt like, this concert's never gonna end. We are so happy, that Mike Portnoy is back and we already have our tickets for Cologne in October 🤘 PS: loved your headbanging 😆 ... and James is LaBrie's middlename 🤣

So let me try this again . . . I was working at Tower Records in Santa Monica at the time, and this is around when I went from stock clerk to Display Artist. We had gotten some cool promotional art for it (I kept 2 of everything, which I still have in storage), so without being asked, I created a display for it. The Elektra reps were soo happy I took time to make them, they specifically gave me promos or official CD's from the music I enjoyed, including the RARE "Live Scenes from NY" with the original cover on the day of "9/11". I was also able to see the Tour (seen them since "Awake" with Derek on the keys) and LaBrie's voice was strong that night in LA. Lets see if I can add the "Display" I made for Six Degrees & Live Scenes, in a reply comment . . .

The scratching sound in the intro is the ending of the previous album "Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a memory"... the concept album that ended w/ the main character's record player skipping to the end and u hear the player's needle scratching on a loop. That was the link between album #5 and album #6 ('Six degrees of inner turbulence') which begins w/ 'The Glass Prison' opening w/ the same record player scratching loop. The song 'The Glass Prison' was drummer Mike Portnoy writing Part 1 of the '12 step suite'... depicting his own experience w/ recovery from alcoholism and the 12-step program from Alcoholics Anonymous. Part 2 was on the next album 'Train of Thought'(7th album w/ 7 tracks) ... track #2 - 'This dying soul'. Part 3 was track #1 again on the 'Octavarium' ('Octa' means 8, as in 8th album w/ 8 tracks) - 'The root of all evil'. Part 4 was the track 'Repentance' on their 9th album 'Systematic chaos'. Part 5 was the final part - 'The shattered fortress'... from the album 'Black clouds & silver linings'.

Glass Prison is part 1 of Mike Portnoy's 12 step suite, 5 songs on 5 consecutive albums. After Mike had left the band he finally realized to play the whole suite on his 2017 tour under the name of Mike Portnoy's Shattered Fortress - the band consisting of Mike plus the members of Haken plus Eric Gillette of Neal Morse Band. We saw it at Night of the Prog in 2017 at the wonderful Loreley Open Air Amphitheatre 🤘 The Twelve-Step Suite, also referred to as The AA Saga, is a group of five songs spread across five albums, from Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence to Black Clouds & Silver Linings. The lyrics were all written by Mike Portnoy, and each one deals with his recovery from alcoholism. Each of the song contains two or three movements, which represent the Twelve Step program used by Alcoholics Anonymous. Each song is dedicated "to Bill W. and his friends," which is a reference to Bill Wilson, the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous.

*So as I see from the thumbnail, Myung has her finger pickin' da' Bass! :D . . .* The "end of the record noise" comes from the _surprise_ "ending" of the _previous_ album "Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory" 😉. That's also Mike Portnoy at the beginning dueling with LaBrie's distorted voice (and background vocals). And you're reacting to that "Gang Vocals" that yes, Thrash bands used to do a lot. All the lyrics are pretty intense on both CD's, and Portnoy has been sober since 2000. About dat Bass . . . . Myung usually follows the double-bass line from Portnoy and will add his fills or go off in a counter direction, so maybe that's why Lexi can't focus on Myung. But I can usually hear him, myself, you would notice if he wasn't there. Myung is the most soft-spoken of the band, and doesn't talk much, but when he does . . . he can be deep :). kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3aWeXyjm61gY6csi=QXvDYQddzuzUhQ1A 🤣 I think you ought to do MORE from "Awake", LaBrie's voice on most songs are rougher, and those particular tracks I think are just as heavy as Glass Prison, where others are more ethereal because of Kevin Moore's writing. I remember Portnoy and Petrucci saying in an interview back then that Pantera, Meshuggah & Metallica were big inspirations for the album. According to Portnoy's blog (about "Six Degree's"): _"Influences for the album's writing and recording, include; Metallica's Master of Puppets, Radiohead's OK Computer (and also a Radiohead bootleg Portnoy brought in), Pantera's Far Beyond Driven and the song "Mouth for War", Megadeth's Rust in Peace, U2's Achtung Baby, Tool's Ænima, Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral, Soundgarden's Superunknown, Alice in Chains' Dirt, Kevin Gilbert's Thud, King's X's Faith Hope Love and Galactic Cowboys' Space in Your Face, Béla Bartók, Rage Against the Machine's The Battle of Los Angeles, and Maria Tipo's Chopin Nocturnes."_ Lastly, #nicknlexrequest Lexi brought up "This is like the definition of Progressive Metal" . . . If she could sit through the length, I would LOVE to hear you both listen to these 2 *Fates Warning* tracks: 1st - "The Ivory Gate of Dreams" from the album "No Exit" (1988). No one had done anything like this, and solidified FW as the Fathers of Prog Metal (with Queensrÿche). This was the debut album (their 4th) for the new vocalist "Ray Alder", after John Arch left (or fired). 2nd - "The Long Shadows of the Day" from their last album in 2020. The intro to this track is insane! (but listen to the above track 1st). These are incredible pieces that I KNOW (again :P) that will blow you guys away 🤯. - So glad Lexi enjOyed this, WOO HOO!!!! \m/
