That's not auto-tuning. It's just an oscillating gate where it's just rapidly cutting the sound and bringing it back at a defined rhythm.

Gotcha! Thank you for clarifying!

Thanks for checking out Justice! This is one of my favorite DC title tracks and one of their best comebacks. The vocal effect used in the first and second chorus is not auto-tuning, its vocal gating done to illustrate the struggle of the battle, it's a stylistic choice. After Jiu breaks the ropes during the last belt in the 2nd chorus, that affect isn't used again. During the final 3rd chorus the vocals ring through loud and clear because they've overcome the struggles they were facing. If you want to hear it without the effect the Its Live performance has them doing the full belts without any vocal affects and the DancEAR performance has them doing full choreo with the belts, though the first belt is shortened to accommodate the breathing requirements while dancing. You should definitely check out the rest of the album, it's fantastic. There's also a live showcase for Justice and 2 Rings.

Thank you for that clarification. And it makes perfect sense that it is used as a storytelling device, given the amazing stories that Dreamcatcher weaves. Many viewers have recommended the DancEAR performance, so we're excited to check that out!!

dreamcatcher \:D/ justice is the conclusion of a two part series that started with ootd. there's a lot to unpack but I'll just bring up two imo main points to the series. the first is how greed and excess negatively impact today's society. ootd showed the extreme pursuit of superficial goals which is symbolized by the crown. here in justice, you see the apple which is symbolic for temptation being stabbed and the mv ends with the crown being destroyed. the justice mv itself is also very simple compared to ootd. most of the scenes take place in the same set and without much special effects whereas ootd took place in many extravagant sets all post edited to make everything seem perfect. because dreamcatcher often makes social commentary on current day topics, I interpret an underlying theme targeting the entertainment industry, more specifically music, and even perhaps kpop. there's been a lot of recent controversy about how certain big companies are debuting groups who seemingly can't sing so the emphasis is more on appearance. in essence, big companies are selling high budget videos with over-produced music to make up for any lack of singing ability - glitz and glamour over substance. this is why ootd had a more 'typical' kpop sound and concept. ootd's vocals for the entire song was also post edited to give a distorted and autotune feel. if you know dreamcatcher's discography, they never do this and rarely have any vocal effects in their songs. in justice, the first two chorus also have effects placed but in the final chorus it was removed. the mv also ends with a cassette tape being played, perhaps to suggest going back to early more simple times predating autotune, when music was just that, music and not all the excesses placed over it. if you haven't seen 1thek's dancear justice performance, maybe consider reacting to it. dreamcatcher is singing live without backing and any vocal filters. there's no reverb, no post edit compressing, just raw. you almost never see this in kpop. in fact I can't think of another performance like this. for comparison if you watch the dancear performances by other groups, you should be able to easily tell input reverb being placed on the vocals and even autotune for some of the performances.

Thank you so much for sharing that information with us! We definitely felt that "Justice" seemed like it belonged with another video (as a series), so that makes perfect sense. And thank you for the recommendation of the 1thek performance - we'll definitely take a look!

Yay, more Dreamcatcher 🥳 was looking forward to this. My initial reaction was more or less the same. Amazing song, but not too sure about that stuttering in the belting. But 1. They don't do that in live performances 😊 2. I'm getting used to it and actually think it's a cool effect. Besides part 8, insomnicsy also recently released a short music film: it basically shows Dreamcatcher through the years on the song "Fireflies". So, if you're gonna do an album reaction, you might consider that video instead of a lyric video or something.

Wow, thank you for sharing! Interesting that they don't do the stuttering/reverb in the live performances. Another viewer recommended the 1thek performance, so we're going to check that out! And thank you for the short music film recommendation. We'll definitely check that out!

I guess they were trying to make it sound like an echo with the vocal effect? It's gone on the last chorus right after Jiu breaks off the rope. I remember a b-side called “Break the Wall" where they used vocal effect to kind of imitate the voice of a person locked behind a wall. When the chorus hits, the vocal effect is also gone

Not sure we noticed that the effect is gone on the last chorus the first time through, but we definitely noticed in upon further views and we love it! It's very cool that it is used as a storytelling piece, given what you have said. Dreamcatcher weaves such beautiful stories through their music and MVs 😍

So, on very last chorus, that stuttering effect isn't there, and Siyeon sings it out. That's how it sounds live all the way through. No effect. Just high belting out and live vocals.

Yes! We noticed that on subsequent watches and that has become our favorite part! Other viewers have mentioned that they do not do it during live performances, so we're excited to take a look at one of those 🤗
