Therion is a Swedish band, Christofer Johnson is the guitarist and owner of the band, they use opera singers and a standard. They also have a singer who can sing opera but prefers musical theater. The compositions are written for opera arrangements and the main inspiration is Richard Wagner. Floor went to the Rock Academie in Tilburg in The Netherlands but alsoo did a year of Opera training and a year of Musical Theatre lessons during or after the Rock Academie. There may be some overlap. Alsoo there is an accoustic version of the song "Energize Me" with the string quartet "Red Limo" in a chapel or small church. Vilja Lied and O Mio Bambino Caro she had to learn in her Opera studies being a Soprano. Some say a Mezzo others classify her differently. Maybe she is just all and chooses precisely how she want's to sound in any song.

this was the first song in that season of the show. no one really knew Floor back then. Just that she sang "metal". You see the realisation in the faces of the others in the seats: ok, this woman can sing! in the reaction afterward Henk said he had tears in his eyes because she reminded him of his mother singing that very aria bringing his father to tears. Check out the rest of her performances in that show, best are the clips with the other talking about it before and after.

Yeah Nick! What you are feeling is what many many of us feel when we hear her and see her perform. She is a truly special talent and in my opinion the best singer I've ever heard. She can definitely do it all and that's why she is a Goddess. Her stage presence and face expressions were some of the first things I noticed in the beginning of my Nightwish and Floor journey. Also, no other singer can make me smile ear to ear in one song and the next song make me cry and I'm not a super emotional person. Long live Floor Jansen! Floor wasn't widely known in Holland, only one of the other singers have ever heard her before because they played the same festival in holland. This was the first song of the show season, Floor asked what song henk liked and he told floor that he has a soft spot for vilja lied because it was one of his mothers favorite song that she often sang aorund the house. Just the Orchestra backing her and Simone singing this classical duet in Latin with sheet music on stage. Floor sings Alto, Simone takes the soprano part. Metal audience silent in awe. Floor pays attention and proper respect to the conductor, and curtsies to him at the end. He then bows to her.

Floor Janssen has cured me from my aversion towards soprano opera singers. I just couldn't handle to hear the high notes. However, her voice sounds so smooth, relaxed in the high notes, that I totally changed my mind. Hearing her sing for example in this Vilja song has opened a space for me to be in of total beauty, relaxation. As a non-religious person I would call it heaven. Tears in my eyes. It is impossible to catch it with words. It also opened up my ears and mind for opera. What a gift she gave me.

This song is the first of the show. Nobody knew of Floor Jansen and her incredible voice (Metal music is not popular in the Netherlands). Floor has been a fan of Henk (she was very nervous about meeting him on the show, and acted very fan-girly, which was really funny to see) ever since she was taken to see "Phantom" in the Dutch production (and he is reputed to be Andrew Lloyd Webber's favourite of all the singers who have been cast as Erik [The Phantom] in the original national productions around the world.). Entirely unknown to her, Henk had been following her career ever since she had been studying. This was the opening song of the season of Beste Zangers, and as each singer had to ask one of the others to perform with them as a duet in the closing shows, she asked Henk to join her in the fantastic performance of "Phantom" that you have already heard. The producers wisely placed them last in the running order (because who could follow that?!) So Floor both opened and closed the season. This particular song was chosen because Henk had mentioned somewhere that his mother used to sing it around the house when Henk was a child, so it has special meaning for him. He held up well - some of the other participants were reduced to being openly in tears by Floor's selection for them! During the recordings, Henk became everyone's favourite "uncle". He learned to add distortion for the first time in his life for his choice of song (Disturbed's version of "The Sound Of Silence") for her. They are now firm friends (how could it be otherwise?). I think we all have a crush on Floor! It has been said that Floor can sing anything, so when she was guesting on a Dutch Radio show (NPO Radio 2), she was challenged to sing the 'phone book (actually the Yellow Pages as that was all they could find). The concept of the 'beste zangers' (best singers) show is that a group of singers gather and every week ine singer is singled out and all other singers perform songs that are meaningful to them. So here floor is performing for Henk and hence this stylistic choice. Conversely, when performing for Floor, Henk sings the sound of silence, but the version by Disturbed, to pick something in here genre. All other participants were very pleased with floor's performance in their style (as you can imagine)

I love this performance by Floor and this was the first song sung on that season on Beste Zangers and the first time the other singer, with the exception of Tim Akkerman, had heard Floor sing. Of course even Tim had never heard her do anything Opera style. I'm sure they were wondering after this performance how to match that. Turns out they were all really good singers...maybe not Floor level singers but great singers just the same. Now, you would love the Nightwish song, "Shoemaker" and I suggest for reaction purposes, the Official Video with lyrics and then afterward for the pure joy of it the live version from Hellfest 2022. I am German and I love how wonderfully I can understand her singing in German. It's quite common for Dutch people to be able to talk German but I still appreciate it when they do. I can't speak Dutch, so.... And I love it when people don't feel too 'urgh' towards our sometimes too precise but otherwise wonderful language. (I love words like 'gorgeous'. It has so many emotional flavours to it that german words mostly lack in my opinion.)

This affected me more than most reactions, perhaps because you're an opera singer? My dad loved _Vilja_ _Lied._ When I was going through my mum's things I found a newspaper clipping, which was a review of a performance of the operetta "The Vagabond King" by the Coventry Amateur Operatic Society in February 1936, when my dad was still not quite 21. He is listed by the reviewer as one of four people who are "so well known that one knows the pleasing performance they will offer", which feels like high praise because it's taking the quality for granted! The full show gives the background of the relation between the song and the person it is sung to. If I remember correctly Henk's mother used to sing it to him when he was young. Also, seeing the reaction of the singers after the song is really emotional.

So, a bit of context. Beste zangers format involves inviting some well known vocalists in a house and each of these provides organisers with a list of favourite songs they performed or songs that they love. Every episode one of them sits on the throne so to speak and the others choose and perform from his /her list for him/her. Henk Poort's mother was an opera singer too and used to sing him this song a lot when he young so he put on list. Floor sang it for him in the episode centered to him. Now about Henk's distortion. First time he showed it when in Floor's episode he sang one from her list. Sound of Silence (Disturbed version).

You need to understand the premise of this show where the best singers come together to take turns performing songs significant to one of them. This song is significant to Hank because his stepfather and his mother loved opera and he was weaned on this stuff. This song was a tribute to his mom who often sang it.

She was the first to sing in the very first episode. And no one really knew who she was, most singer on the show and most of the audience. We basically see Henk Port fall in love with her in real time during the song. 😊

I agree on the vivo per lei. Emma was "only" a you tube singer before this show and mostly singing covers of modern popsongs. Henk recognized her talent and song a duet with her and she excelled. Henk did not overpower her. I think she surprised herself. It enjoyed it so much to see her so happy with herself.

Interesting fact: this was the first episode of that season's "contest", with Henk Poort as the central figure- she opened that episode as the first singer to perform. The others did not really know her, or what she is about, and were totally, umm... floored.

We told you, she CAN do everything, in such an easy way. Even when she belts, you don’t see her changing her position, nor do you see her muscles in abdomen and chest a lot. She said in an interview that it is not about the amount of air you press threw to get a massive sound but to use your vowels and palet in a good way. Did you watch her sing arias of Puccini, on Dutch tv? It is on you tube. Shoemaker (live) Hellfest shows her versatility from Metal to full blown opera. Shoemaker was a famous geologist, who worked for NASA and researched crates on earth and the moon. He died in a car accident, very sad and NASA brought his ashes to the crate innige moon that was named after him. On the urn there is an engraved quote from Shakespeare, which you will hear in the sing. It’s an ode to Shoemakers important work and his life❤ Btw Floor has her master in Opera and theatre as well. She feels exactly how to sing a piece and that’s why she reaches so many hearts. Metalheads often love classical music and musicians are often classical trained. The Dutch female metal front women ALL are classical trained. Thank you sir!

As others already recommended: Shoemaker (the end of this song always brings me to tears because of its beauty). But read first who Eugene Shoemaker had been and what is so special about him, otherwise you will not understand the lyrics. Or "O mio babbino caro" for full opera mode. By the way, there are several metal singers (female and male) that are classically trained. I was astonished to learn that e.g. Rob Halford of Judas Priest was. And also the singers of Queensryche and Empyrium seem to have been classically trained (but I don't know this for sure, it is only my impression). Of course Simone Simons (Epica) is, also Dianne van Giersbergen etc. Although Floor Jansen only has one year of classical training (plus one year musical theatre and four years at the Rock Academy Tilburg) she is highly talented for this kind of music.
