This may sound like a cop-out, but I think a lot of the King tropes are linked due to the fact the book themselves are linked. So, the psychics all have ‘the shining’, Maine is where all the evil lies. I might have gotten some of that wrong, and the re use of certain things like the bullies etc don’t add up, but a lot of it is due to the shared universe I think.

Yeah. King movies tend to be too short to really give the context needed to get scenes like the one where the kids find the Scooby-Doo lunch box. I think Kings work has to be read and imagined to really get "the whole picture". But all in all it's nice to have the movies, because they're funny as fuck. EDIT: Holy fuck i died right after "two albino caterpillars with Morgan Freemans face attached"
@karenamyx22052 жыл бұрын
You must be write.. because every Stephen king book I've read was at least worth reading, if not great. Even the ones with bad movies.. He is long winded though, but it pays off. I suspect the problem with Stephen King is that, while a very good author, he is so famous that nobody tells him when he is clearly putting stupid stuff into his stories. Other authors have dumb ideas as well, but they are usually eliminated after a few drafts. Basically, King needs a less forgiving editor.

He even said in an interview that he brought Stephen Spielberg in for a while to help out with ROTS, and would claim that some of his decisions were from Spielberg since he knew they wouldn't be questioned that way. Which is pretty damn sneaky, and shows how well he understood this phenomenon. See, the problem was that Lucas actually wanted Star Wars to be kinda stupid, which I imagine complicated the matter a whole lot.

At 7:35 when you reffer to them singing to him as a wierd thing... Maybe I am wierd too, but I did the same thing once. When I was in first grade, we had a a special needs kids in our class. He was sad over something, and the teacher had issues cheering him up again. Me, being just a silly kid, decided to walk up to the two of them and start singing and play "If you're happy and you know it clap your hands", with the him. And... it worked! He started to smile and he laughed a little, and all around seemed to be back in good mood. It is a cherished memory of mine. So, that is why I think it is a little wierd to call that moment of them singing as wierd. Now, obvously, my classmate was not a alien in disguise like in this movie... atleast not as far as I know! :P

it was originally called 'Cancer', apparently because of when people find out they have cancer by seeing blood in their shit. Makes more sense than 'Dreamcatcher'
@johntumahab3237 жыл бұрын
Well...you have to be kind of a Stephen King junkie to possibly see the connection, but...the short answer is it makes a bit more sense in the book version. The idea was that the psychic power that Duddits had, connected to the other boys, gave the ability to translate thoughts and desires into reality, i.e. a "real life dreamcatcher". The problem is it was totally involuntary on Duddits' part, and the boys could involuntarily make things happen against his will (such as Stephen King Trope #11, when they psychically killed their bully in the book in an involuntary action). "Mr. Gray" isn't a gray-skinned alien in the book; he's a noncorpeal manifestation into physical reality courtesy of Gary's connection to Duddits. The question the book leaves uncertain is WHAT he was before that. There's a lot of evidence that he was nothing more than a split personality that Gary evoked when got in his accident, but...there's also a lot of evidence that Mr. Gray is, in fact, another malevolent entity like Pennywise was or possibly IS Pennywise from "IT". (The movie barely touched on the fact the climax occurs in Derry, the same locale as "IT", but in the book there's a monument to the flood that destroyed Derry's sewer system in the climax of the book...as well as grafitti on it that reads: "PENNYWISE LIVES".) In fact, in the original book, the two remaining main characters kill Mr. Gray in a "battle of wills" as well rather than Duddits turning into an alien and such. In that case, it would be a metaphorical example of "a nightmare getting caught in the dreamcatcher".

If Wikipedia's plot summary is accurate, when the aliens confront at the end, they explode and the resulting fireworks look like a dreamcatcher.

Well in the book, dreamcatchers are used pretty heavily for symbolism. The web of relationships between people memories and places form a dreamcatcher that the aliens, actually a species of sapient psychic mold that is symbiotic and harmless to most species but interacts with the bacteria of human digestive systems in a Very Bad Way, can actually perceive.

@@suckypuckle9292 so it's a matter of 'choose your cop out ending'.
@suckypuckle92926 жыл бұрын
@@kenisu-of-dragons5766 Well, not so much. I was amidst a re-read of the book when I came here and the ending is quite a lot clearer now. Mr. Gray isn't real. That is to say: Some fuckin' alien thing is in Jonesy's head, being all fuckin' alien. But everything we see of it, the speaking through Jonesy's mouth and all of that, is not real. The alien's words words translate through his mouth only to make some sense for him of the inhuman "thoughts" it's filling his head with. It calls itself Mr. Gray because IT (the clown), who is either an active terror or just a boogeyman tale depending on whether you're in town during IT's hibernation or not, uses the name Robert Gray - so his memory's basically snatched a name from a spooky campfire story, more or less, to create some grounded identity for this thing in his head. And its 'voice' has a British accent because Jonesy and his pals are all major TV dorks and the bad guys always have cartoonish British accents. So the aliens are real, the thing in Jonesy is real - but everything tangible about it, the name and voice and all is just his brain striving to make sense of the incomprehensible thing that's taken up residence in his head, because otherwise his brain would break. It's a similar matter to IT, actually: IT isn't a giant spider --- but that's the closest fragile human minds can get to what IT really is without imploding, so that's what they all see at the end. Both very much in the Lovecraft camp of 'This shit will drive you mad if you comprehend its true form -- so just settle for something nicer.'

It's a little late, and noone else gave you a decent answer. In the book the dreamcatcher is a symbol for Duddits (who isn't an alien) that with his mental abilities connects the other four, giving them abilities. Just like a dreamcatcher has strings/yarn connecting different points along the circle, Duddits' abilities connect the five boys. In the book, Duddits actually dies on the way to intercept Jonesie, and after the aliens are defeated and Duddits has died, Henry and Jonesie no longer possess any mental abilities.
