Hold on... this is a big one... It's the surface level take that people are getting wrong and then they dip out without digging deeper... there's a lot going on in the MV and the lyrics. The moment people decide that it's just a flex song should have been the biggest hint if you missed other hints in the video or even the person falling over should have been a wait... what? moment. As you said this is not the type of lyrics that DC does, so people should have thought harder at that point on what exactly is the reason for the lyrics. DC makes social commentary in many of their songs. The album is them portraying VillainS when confidence gets pushed too far into Narcissism. It's a satire on some other groups brag songs (and a big reason why they lean into their version of those types of songs) getting their fans to want to be like them and spend money on things they can't afford in the attempts to do so. The person in the office is a fan (who was part of a whole alternate realty game on Twitter and elsewhere leading up to the release. People following that had an advantage in understanding that something much darker was going on here. Note all the Crowns in the MV as part of that. The crown is something people were following and trying to attain. This is used to recruit their "followers" which doesn't end well). The same fan is seen at the end of the video being knocked out / sacrificed / we don't fully know but she was lured in by them and the crown. An early line, "Gonna catch your attention then wait till you know" can be taken as a message to us. You'll get caught by the MV, but the more you watch and discuss with others, you'll begin to know what the song is really about and they'll wait for you to know. We're not seeing a DC MV. We're seeing an MV where they're playing parts as a typical Kpop group creating an MV. We see design, editing, visual effects, Handong fighting Yoohyeon, but cut and they're back to their real selves. Indicating that what you see in a finished product isn't necessarily reality. Looking closer at Handong in the beginning, her closeups being caught by the camera, look great but then it pulls out to show brusises all over her legs. JiU is in a box like she a doll / product. She calles herself Venus and Nephthys. Venus fits with it being a goddess of Beauty, but Nephthys is assocaited with Death and Decay. Dami "cursing and has the line "Don't you feel like a monster?" definitely indicates there's something darker going on here. The lyrics are purposefully like many pop songs where they just brag about how awesome they are, so priceless, so gorgeous, so flawless, so spotless... they're beyond your reach, showing off what fashion they have, products they own and won't you try and join them buy buying similar products. By they end you've been entranced and you're done for. DC is wearing their version of the more popularized music styles like they're showing off an Outfit of the Day. Putting out the same message with a traditional DC sound, just wouldn't have been nearly as effective becuase DC songs don't put out brag songs. The instrumentation itself even has dark foreboding progressions and as the lyrics clue us in as it goes on it becomes hypnotizing in the last parts. Some people, immediately dismissed as not a rock song and not a horror concept. As you mentioned it's still a rock vibe just with different instruments. This is still a horror concept, but more of a modern horror like something you'd see on an episode of Black Mirror dealing with horror concepts in a high tech world. So, if one just listed to the MV once, took it at face value and then didn't pay any more attention to it, then one completely missed out. "Gonna catch your attention then wait till you know"

@@ThatKpopGuitarist Thanks. It's an amalgamation of multiple comments I made over time on the original MV along with some bits from others and there's still some things I neglected to mention, simply because I didn't want to spend forever merging things together. One additional thing, If you're familiar with Sunmi's Noir, this MV is like DC's version of some of the same ideas.

I FEEL that "BIG stank face" on Dami's rap part! I absolutely love OOTD! And the lyrics of this song are clearly sarcastic, about narcissism in social media. Dreamcatcher is not the kind of group, that suddenly starts singing just about how gorgeous they are and "look at my black dress, look at my neckless"

I agree. It threw me off especially during my first listen. The classic formula that Dreamcatcher has been using is not at all present here but once I take a step back, reset my expectations, and listen to it again, I really do like it. Still has elements of familiarity, especially when Dami takes over with her rap, signaling a change in the music tempo/melody(?). It also screams of badass-ery, just like all the prior Dreamcatcher title tracks.

At first glance you could think this is about them being proud and happy with themselves, about confidence. I don't think that is it though. The album is called VersuS VillainS, which makes me think it is not this simple. So I believe this song is meant as a criticism of narcissism, vanity, materialism and also (maybe) the fast fashion industry. "OOTD" stands for "Outfit of the Day" after all, maybe it's about useless instagram influencers posting videos of their outfit of the day, which also promotes fast fashion. The fact that fashion is moving ever faster is the most destructive industry to the planet apart from the fossil fuel industry. The Aral lake has all but disappeared because of the cotton industry for example. It would fit to the Villain image, and you can see in the MV that they are acting. It is shown in the scene where Yoohyeon and Handong are fighting, but then the camera is off and Handong helps Yoohyeon up. The main reason why I don't think it is about confidence or their own success is the line "Driving on the highway, drunken everyday, do you feel like a monster?" and the album title. That just doesn't fit. And there was the ymenehcra account posting about touching a crown is dangerous and other cryptic messages before the comeback. It could also be a big and well-hidden F*U to the Kpop industry, like the Nightmare arc probably was. The narcissism and materialism is definitely criticized here, and Dreamcatcher have been criticized a lot themselves because of their rock/metal concept, while other groups have been celebrated for using a guitar riff once in a song. And Handong standing in front of the camera with bruises all over her legs seems to be a comment on the merciless industry as well. The music is highly interesting as well. The Rock is dirty and distorted. The song structure is not what you'd expect at all, for me it is punk rock meets K-Pop. Not their usual spiel, but a very good progression. It takes a couple of listens to really appreciate it.

Thanks for the reaction! I love the song so much. About the lyrics, here my opinion. It's 100% Dreamcatcher. Think about it. Kpop industry always not considered them for their concept, too much dark. Expecialy in Korea. Now they made a song with an exaggerated concept and a ironic lyric. Look, I am a goddess! But than Dami's rap come and she said at the end "Do you feel like a monster?". I love this song for the music, but the lyric omg, it's a middle finger to the industry.

We have the same ult groups. Imagine if ATEEZ/DC did a collab. I’ve heard several people say often that ATEEZ music is made for musicians that’s why the general public doesn’t understand/like them, and I feel DC is similar. They have the same production team after all. The music is very complex. 😜 At first listen, I was SLIGHTLY put off by the lyrics (mostly SuA’s verse) but the musicality of it pulled me in instantly and now I just sing the whole thing, no forks given. My understanding is that they’re not so much being serious about the lyrics but more so satirical about them. Dami’s “I’m so gorgeous”…. Yes, yes you all are. 🥰 And the choreo slays on this! The part where they do the pull move (where they slow the camera), they drop their heads ever so slightly on the beat/hit of it and it’s so satisfying. That outfit in itself is my favorite. Loved the album, love the girls, loved your reaction! Thanks Andrew! 🫰🏼

Ayy, you're so welcome! I would freaking LOVEEEEEEEE an Ateez/DC collab. I think that stylistically, they're the closest to each other in the industry and I think it would be NEXT LEVEL. Maybe it is made more for musicians, but it's that complexity that draws me in. That and the lore/themes they use. It's one of the things that draws me in. But yeah, I'm slowly learning more about the concept here in the comments and it's blowing my mind. 👀🤯

I'm so glad you caught that slight slow-motion in the choreo matching that part in the chorus. Its literally my favourite part that LIVES in my mind 24/7. When they do that part live, i know there's no slo-mo but it still FEELS like there is cause they hit it so cleanly😂 I was a little surprised people didn't feel like them, the second i heard that DIRTY low bass I knew it was them. As you said they have a signature, and i totally agree, to me this one was excrutiatingly clear. That's part of their iconic sound imo. I did see someone people saying it's more "pop" "money chasing era" I do think people have interpreted this concept as a more "shallow" "look at how hot and gorgerous I am" which I personally think is a slay. We love seeing confident women!! I think a good amount of people who think it's more shallow probably weren't following the ARG mystery code event, they built such a story around this release, and details like mentioning Nephthys I would assume they thought that's another goddess of beauty like Venus. I do agree, the right kind of fans will stay with them even if they dont love the song, I just hope they can someday appreciate the depth and commentary in this one too. This storyline looks sick as hell though. This kind of dark villain evil era is SERVING!!! I had to come back to mention, i too found it kinda funny they had to motion track the motion tracking. The produiction and CG in this video was excellent, which is so nice to see coming from the rougher older MVs. The polish on this one is phenomenal!

It's not that different. If you've been on the Dreamcatcher train since 2017, then you know this is exactly where they've been going. They've always been out in front of the mainstream, they never do the same thing twice, and yet it's always Dreamcatcher. OOTD (Outfit of the Day) is one of their most complex M/V so some further explanation might come handy. OOTD has at least three layers - Superficial, Satirical and Story layer. The first is the most obvious which is the self-empowering, confidence boosting "we are beautiful, successful, rich and famous" kind of message. JiU calls herself Venus, a goddess and being literally "drop dead gorgeous" at the end.. And it is just soo over the top :D But the thing is they deserve it and could actually do it, but it is just not them. On a satirical layer this song is a huge middlefinger to the music industry in general and the superficial beauty where everything is all about the looks, everything staged and edited. The soundscape and parts of the M/V mimic generic girl crush concept sounds (what we do not really hear in the other 70+ songs DreamCatcher has) and they redraw parts of other M/Vs (mostly YG and a big LOL to the bedazzled cheetah). Posing with cool Cars and Motorcycles (Siyeon - Sua), doing commercial and product placement (Gahyeon), just posing looking fabulous with high fashion (Handong and JiU wearing Dior), making fake drama for more views (Yoohyeon) etc. The rap section is told from the perspective of an idol how many of them act after getting some fame. Dami even calls out as her last line to the idols acting as such: How is it, do you feel like a monster? And for all the previous pictures they empathize that those are fake, and show how they actually look from behind the scene. Handong with the bruises, JiU like a boxed product, the Yoohyeon drama that ends right after the cut and the behind the scene footage and rendering shots for the other three. They also incorporate really short cuts to ensure we do not take them seriously, like the face Handong makes, Yoohyeon burst into a laughter throughout the final chorus, Siyeon laughing etc. Also the "Look at my necklace" (that she is not wearing), "look at my black dress" while wearing street fashion... Now for this satirical layer they had to adjust a bit their delivery and this is what makes this track different and this is why many who love the Dreamcatcher signature sound complain. First they wanted to not just look but to sound a bit like a traditional K-Pop girl crush song. And those filters and distortions and tuning that make a not so great singer sound good actually take a bit away from parts as we can hear their natural voice less as normally they do not use it since they are such great singers and do not need it... Also they deliberately used lifeless robotic delivery through the "OOTD this my fashion shut up no more question", like OOTD is the only thing that matters, they have no opinion about anything else, do not ask them about anything else as this is the robotic answer you get. In the final chorus they are almost laughing while singing to highlight the sarcasm. Also the overly playful mocking tone of the "I am only doing better". All in all ppl complaining about why the track is different most probably miss this layer. And finally there is the story layer where OOTD is the 1st part of a duology. Dreamcatcher members here are the villains who lure poor Shasha (the protagonist of the video, working as a video editor or graphical artist) into some kind of an augmented reality experience looking for the "crown" (aka fame, success whatever). The analogy I think is the follow the white rabbit from Matrix (along with many other Matrix style references throughout the M/V). And to appeal to Shasha they play the role of being great and rich and successful aligning with the narcissisms of the satirical layer. The story starts when Sasha searches for Dreamcatcher videos and stumbles upon the mysterious Dreamchat where Archenemy (spelled backwards, the 99th victim of Dreamcather) tells her about the power of the crown that she should be looking for luring her into this VR game. She follows the crown (drawn at the back of the truck) and at the end finds it but falls a victim of Dreamcatcher becoming the 100th sacrifice hence completing the crown. JiU even refers herself as Nephthys who is actually the goddess of death, decay, and darkness, mother of Anubis and Shasha falls when JiU "places the crown" on her head. This lore is not in the video, there were some external clues to put together this part.

thank u for saying that, it is Dreamcatcher's signature 100%, I can't understand people who are saying the opposite, the instrumental is their sound, and the concept also is clearly not about fashion, it is about how people will do anything to be famous, it describes the high level of Narcissism، Temptation and sacrifice, DC here are the villains who tempt people to sacrifice them to obtain the crown, it is about how people can do anything to get higher, even if they need to kill others “At the end of MV, they killed the girl ”, it is totally their concept and sound, they made it in a different way but it is still them

dreamcatcher \:D/ I'm sure lots of people already chimed in but here's another lol. it's satire on how society prioritizes beauty and perhaps poking at the entertainment/kpop industry itself because it's ironic the first time dc does girl crush flex, it's satire. how you feel about ootd depends on what you listen to. if you are with a group that listens to a lot of kpop, ootd will feel just like a normal song with a lot of elements from kpop incorporated. personally from the insomnia groups I have contact with, the majority do not like ootd and think it's their worse title track or even worse song. the general consensus from this group is it's a kpop song trying to imitate dreamcatcher instead of dreamcatcher being dreamcatcher. I can forgive the cringe lyrics knowing its satirical context, but obviously it could have been written better so most people wouldn't misinterpret it as a simple flex song. the instrumentals for the most part are pretty cool as well, but it lacks dreamcatcher's signature for title tracks, guitars front and center. here I feel it gets lost for a good part of the song, sitting in the background. even this I can forgive because I don't mind dreamcatcher always going out in different directions, with most if their songs actually being non-rock. what I cannot forgive is the vocal distortion on all their vocals for the entire of the song. listen to each part from the studio then compare to say the live radio. what makes dreamcatcher them are their vocals, the color of their vocals and how it brings dynamics into each verse, how they play off each other. in ootd it gets entire lost imo, because of the vocal distortion. any group including one with no vocal talent at all could have done this song the way it was presented and that's why to me it's not a dc song because it sounds like anyone else could have done it.

my controversial opinion as someone who has been with dreamcatcher since debut is that this is one of their best comebacks and it makes me sad that the message of it is lost on so many people. the message about consumerism, a lack of authenticity in the industry and even in people outside of the industry through social media, and the pain and danger that comes with trying to be perfect reminds me of noir by sunmi (another song that i see misconstrued a lot despite how heavy handed the symbolism is in the music video). these concepts from dreamcatcher go back to boca (though boca is more about harassment over the internet and the fact that people feel more comfortable attacking others when they feel anonymous) but the music video for OOTD is much more clear in my opinion

Yes, the song was not what I expected it to be. I really love 'Apocalyse: From Us'. Bon Voyage is literally my top listened song of 2023. And it took me a long, long time to understand the concept and direction they were going with OOTD. What I missed in OOTD were the melodic elements that Dreamcatcher normally has in their choruses. The song starts out with a good hook but when it reaches the chorus, it felt flat. For OOTD, what I thought the chorus was actually the prechorus [where they go 'rise'], so that kept throwing me off and I had to reset my brain for a while. I feel like some parts could be done better. On a positive note, that Dami rap and the breakdown I have to admit was, I think, was the highlight. Also that prechorus melody is so good tho, I can't get it out of my head.

The track is different and I think nobody expected "this" as the title track. Yes, there is still the Dreamcatcher in there. OOTD as well as Rising and Shatter could have been used as the title track....and Rising / Shatter might be more of we were all expecting (at least I was 😉). So far, Shatter is the track I've listened to the most...and I would have liked the less "harsh" ending (but it fit's the story).

Would you ever consider making a video about how you create covers? I think it would be very interesting to see the thought process behind the scenes :)

Let me put my two cents here. I must confess that, as a metal head, I was a little bit disappointed at first, since OOTD didn't sound as much "rocker" as Reason, Chase Me and other classic rock themes from DC. It even seemed that DC had finally fallen into temptation of being "just another normal kpop band" which could finaly be appreciated by korean audience. But after some time and some listens, I must say I was wrong. Yes, the song is not rock, but it's not superficial at all. It criticizes modern life narcisism (which is specially hard in Korea) in a very intelligent way. The complete story of the video, with the crown and the messages through social networks is awesome (if you are interested, you can find some deep analysis out there), and the song is good, Dami's part is nice and original, and the style changes are as awesome as we are used to with Leez and Ollounder compositions. Some may say, "ok, but where is rock and darkness?" Well, in other albums, not everything was rock. Yes, we had "Good night", but in the same single there was "Lullaby". Yes, we had "Scream", but in the same album there was "Jazz bar". And so on. In this case, rock is in "Rising" and dark concept is in "Shatter". Not the main song, yes, but if you see the whole picture, Dreamcatcher reamins being Dreamcatcher.

Yeah, after someone explained all that to me, it blew my mind and I couldn't look at it the same way again. I love the more rock/metal songs, but I truly love OOTD now and the rest of the mini album. As you mentioned, the girls stayed true to who they were, even with a slight change in style, and it's really fantastic to see. You can't say the same about all groups.
