Making a yew branch bow: from wood piece to finished weapon. It ended up a bit light (25lb) but still I'm happy with this bow. Just after unstringing it comes back to nearly 2" of natural reflex.

Never have I made a bow from a blank of wood in the round. But I have built things relying a lot by eye, simple measurement & hand tools. It is most satisfying and most modern people will find it so because these procedures have become so rare

If you put some sand or maybe even some gravel in your tillering pulleys and salt up the internal mechanism of your tillering scale you can have a nice pleasant experience tillering while being driven to deafness by all the jarring screeching and grinding of your equipment. So nice, you'll want to do it twice.

Once again a beautiful bow! Did you choose the light draw weight because of the snakyness of the Limbs or because of the overall small diameter of the stave? Thanks!
@DreamcraftBows
@DreamcraftBows 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you sir! I was aiming a bit higher - for 30-35 lb but due to overall stave character and my mistake (I removed too much wood at the single spot) it ended up 25 lb. Still happy with it!

Nice snaky bow. Shoots well. I made a similar yew bow, shorter with recurved tips. It has a sinew back and pulls about 45#. Yours would increase if you shortened it and added sinew, should you want that. It would shoot much more harshly, though, and the draw length would decrease. Good seeing you wearing a mask, yew dust is toxic!

How much sinew to back a 65 inch bow? I have four short cords from a blacktail doe, would i need a thick layer, or just strands?
@dooleyfussle8634
@dooleyfussle8634 2 жыл бұрын
@@totallylegalshit7579 by the time you pound up those tendons, you will have a lot of thread like strands, maybe a paper grocery bag full. They should be 4 to 8 inches long. Then you need some hide glue, I used Mrs. Brown's Cold Hide Glue, from Lee Valley. It doesn't require heat. Then, starting at the grip, layer the strings of tendon across tbe back of the bow working your way up the length of the bow and overlapping each section. When you reach the tip, start on the other end of the bow, working up to it's tip. Once you're finished, allow it to dry/cure for several days. If you have more tendon, start over with another layer. Do as many as you have tendon for. Three or four layers will make very powerful and resilent bow. You can use a file, sandpaper and hot water to smooth and finish the backing. Once the glue has cured completely, maybe three or four weeks depending on the humidity, carefully begin stretching the backing, taking several days to condition it to full draw. You may have to re-tiller the bow depending on how much stronger it gets. I have even used sinew and hide glue as patches to reinforce weak spots/splinters in an otherwise unbacked bow. Have fun.
