Is Prague all there is to Czechia? Of course not! But if you're American, you've probably never heard of Czechia's 2nd largest city, Brno and historical capital of the Moravian region. Think of it as Prague's little sister, with aspirational dreams to out-"hipster" her big sister. We spent 24 hours in Brno to get a taste of Czechia's second city.

Jsem z Prahy, kde mám i rodinu :) a jsem odstěhovaná dobrovolně do Brna. Čelím věčným srandám ze strany Prahy na Brno a opačně jsem zatím neslyšela ani jednu "vtipnou" poznámku na Prahu. Nelituju a naprosto souhlasím, že jde o místo pro lidi, kteří v něm žijí. Pražský cirkus jsem si zažívala 27 let a přišel čas, kdy jsem toho měla dost. Brno mám jako přestupní stanici než se v budoucnu posunu ještě kousek blíž k vinicím, ale nemůžu si stěžovat. Klidnější tempo, mentalita lidí uplně na jiné úrovni - ochotnější, přátelštější. Centrum a obecně město je pro mě krásné a dostatečně velké... nemůžu si to vynachválit. Do Prahy jedině za rodinou a při odjezdu mám Prahy zase až až. Každého věc :).

Just an explonation for non-czech viewers. D1 highway, I/43 road (Svitavy-Brno) and the Brno's main railway station are integral parts of modern Brno's fortification. It's much more effective than the former medieval walls.

Vtipy se přece vyprávějí křížem krážem celou Republikou. Myslela jsem to tak, že to nevypadalo, jako by ty vtipy psal Brňák, ale kdokoliv z jiného města. YES, I'm from Brno and that's exactly what I love about it! The city is very authentic.. as we have almost no tourists here :). On the other hand, we have tens of thousands of students, so all the fun things - bars, cafes, restaurants, hipster places... are rampant, while the prices are still low. Also, the quality of your videos is amazing and you are very fun! Stay safe and thank you for your positive attitude :)

I think you got the point, Brno is really much more authentic in the sense that it is made for people that live there, not for tourists. I think you can apply that to most of the Czech towns (except for Karlovy Vary and Český Krumlov :))

Wow. You are the first person (who is not a native czech) that I know who actually learned to pronounce "Brno" absolutely correctly... I am amazed. I got to know a lot of foreigners/outsiders from all around the world who live here (in Brno) who never achieved that. :DDDDDD I was born and raised in Brno and I love the city. It used to be very boring and empty city when I was a kid. Somehow, it has become overcrowded over those 30 years of my life. Lots of people from whole southern-moravian region come here daily to work. That is also true for foreigners (mainly Slovaks and Ukrainians) who live here in great numbers. There is huge demand for workforce in Brno in all areas and it is typically easy and quick to find a job here... The problem is that central governments have been neglecting real property investments for decades. No new buildings, appartments or neighborhoods have been built as a product of some national housing strategy. The result being real property prices are now much higher than they used to be decades ago. I dare to say that number of people who move/work around the city throughout the day nearly doubled in last 30 years but urban area of the city is still identical (more or less) which can be easily seen on Mapy.cz when comparing maps from different time periods.

D1 nebude zcela opravená nikdy - je to jak s natíráním Eiffelovky. Jen co se skončí na jednom konci, začíná se zase na začátku. Zkrátka kontinuální proces.

@@minduton No, těch problémů bude povícero. Například v době projektování D1 nikdo nepočítal s tím že po ní budou denně jezdit tisíce přetížených kamionů. A taky na tu dálnici pořádně nikdo nesáhnul přes 30 let a s opravou se začalo až už se pomalu měnila v tankodrom...

Your comments about Brno at the end of the video were absolutely spot on. Prague is wonderful but it can sometimes feel that the tourism has overwhelmed it. That obviously hasn't happened to Brno. Most of the people on the street and in the bars and restaurants are locals and visitors are mostly like you from other parts of Czech Rep or maybe from neighbouring countries. I went to university in Brno so I'm a bit biased. I love it.

Also Brno is kown for it's statues like the Astronomical C(l)ock on náměstí Svobody, the statue of Jošt and the "Exekutor odnášející pračku" you've filmed. The analogy of older/younger siblings is actualy pretty accurate. While I enjoy all the tongue-in-cheek humour and teasing going both ways, deep inside we love each other (except some idiots on both sides that take it too seriously of course). So, as someone born and raised in Prague, I never miss the opportunity to go to Brno for a weekend, because it's simply so chilled and nice city with nice people in it.

I lived in Prague 4 years and than 3 years in Brno, and I have to say, that Brno is really amazing city, you have to live here for a few months to feel it. What I love was a lot of nice restauratns and cofes where is standard - nice and interesting design interier, nice food, many types of restaurants vegan, gluten-free, vegetarian ... Another thing what I loved "Zelny Trh" - a lot of vegetables and fruits in top quality, very interesting events, slow pace of people, people do not walk fast, often sit down for wine or coffee, and a lot of people here took care of their mental, spiritual world, and that also seemed very timeless to me. I think it's very good that the people of Prague are making fun of Brno, because if more people knew how great Brno was and there were even more people, it wouldn't be so unique.Sorry for my not best english:) Petra

Ona to není tak zcela pravda, pozice hlavního města se střídala a to mezi Brnem a Olomoucí do třicetileté války po ní vyhrálo Brno. Koneckonců Brno bylo sídlem markrabat (Jan Jindřich, Prokop, Jošt), Olomouc byla sídlem biskupa. Zemský soud a zemské desky byly vedeny v obou městech a stejně tak Moravský zemský sněm zasedal střídavě v obou městech...

Mám Brno a vůbec Moravu moc rád.Ale vzhledem k tomu,že se nevyznám ani trošku ve víně(jsem pivař z Plzně),působím tam trošku jako buran:-)Často si říkám,jak asi muselo být hezké žít v Brně za časů Franty Kocourka,Rudy Kovandy,mladého Polívky,Goldflama,Donutila.....Moc hezký díl Jen.A do Brna jedině vlakem.

@@jansejak1977 Jendo,dělal jsem několik let po sobě přechod Pálavy,z Popic do Mikulova a pak jsem vlakem popojel do Valtic a navštívil Lednicko-Valtický areál.Jednou do mne ve Valticích v hospodě místní staříci začali lít nějaký jejich lektvar zvaný višňák.Do té doby jsem vůbec netušil co to je,od té doby to už vím:-))Prostě z návštěvy areálu už nic nebylo.

You should visit Olomouc, it was the capital city of the Moravia before Brno and it's a quite nice and authentic city too. And to clarify that Moravians doesn't use work "Šalina" for a tram, only Brňaci does.

Looks like you were really having fun! You might wanna consider visiting Olomouc, metropoli Hané. Moravia has little sub-regions with different dialects like Valašsko, Slovácko a wine region (not to be confused with Slovensko), or Haná known for its rich dark soil, flat land scape and dialect where almost everything ends with "é" 🤣

Hey, Jen, next time visiting Brno, you should definitely try to take a train. I'd recommend Railjet „Vindobona“, one of the Czech flagship express trains, it is WAY faster and more comfortable than by a car. You're in Brno directly from Prague in just two and half hours and you can have a good breakfast or a proper tasty dinner in a buffet car, the meals are similar quality as even in many restaurants. You should definitely try! Btw love your videos 😍😀

the dragon of Brno is not exactly of Brno, but dragon of Trutnov (my hometown(I live near the dragon valley)). This dragon was sent as a present to coronation of the moravian prince Jošt from my town. Later Brňáci wanted to have it as their own.

As a Brner/Brnian...jesus, Brňák :) I absolutely love this. Especially the Brno Dragon story and sarcasm about the wheel! :) You got it right with the College Town feel, that's exactly what it is, the largest university population in Czechia there. That's why it's full of pubs, cafes, clubs etc. It has changed in last 5 years, got really a lot hipster, loads of new cafes and so on, getting more touristy as well, but nowhere near as Prague. It's cheaper too, more relaxed and more authentic than Prague. And the best thing is that you're in the middle of a forest or in a lovely hilly terrain in just 15 minutes by tram or bus, or 10 minutes drive. You can't do that in Prague really.

Hello. Really nice video (yes, I'm from Brno). First rule of travelling into Brno is never use car. Especially from Prague trains are going often and it takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes. You wouldn't look for šalina then as most of them have stop just in front of main train station and you wouldn't need it as the Liberty quare (main one) is just 10 minutes of walk from there. Language difference is bigger between Prague and Brno and I'm always surprised that I have hard times to be understood in Prague :-D I hope you enjoyed your stay here and that you'll come back to see more of the city. :-) (and if you announce it ahead I would love to meet you and show you aroud :-) ).

Špilas nad štatlem je betelné. Taky prýgl stojí za čučku, je to kousek šalinou. V Oltecu je i špicovní podzemí hned za bukem sv.Jakuba, ale to už stojí love. Určitě si dejte repete :) ale courákem, ne kočárem :)

Yes I agree re your authenticity comment. I found that also say when you compare Colmar in France to the lesser known Annecy. They are both worth exploring and both gorgeous, but for me Annecy is so much more authentic and you get that local feel. So important when you’re exploring places I think! Děkuji, už se těším jak se všechno zase zazelena, máme to tu prostě krásné. A jak říkáš, byla jsem loni v Praze a centrum mi přišlo jako parodie pro turisty, vůbec to tam není autentické pro místní, ale přetvořené pro turisty. Tady není moc míst, které by si někdo nemohl dopřát. Vrabec pobavil, jedno z mých nejoblíbenějších jídel. 😍
