Thanks for watching!! This video took a long time to make, basically requiring me to work long days the entire week to get it up in time. If you want to help me keep going, donating to my Patreon is a great way to do so: www.patreon.com/dreamsounds I also want to clarify something: at the end of the video, I quote Gilbert Baker, the designer of the original Pride Flag. However, in all of my thumbnails, I use the Philadelphia Pride Flag. This is a deliberate choice, as I like the quote about the original flag, but agree with the activists who say that the importance of the latter design extends far beyond Philadelphia. Here's a paragraph from the creators of the flag to elaborate: "In 1978, artist Gilbert Baker designed the original rainbow flag. An iconic symbol of LGBTQ+ unity. So much has happened since then. A lot of good, but there’s more we can do. Especially when it comes to recognizing people of color in the LGBTQ+ community. To fuel this important conversation, we’ve expanded the colors of the flag to include black and brown. It may seem like a small step. But together we can make big strides toward a truly inclusive community." morecolormorepride.com/

@J R we're not negating what the song is *supposed* to be about. Undoubtedly, the writers didn't want her to be read explicitly as gay or trans. We're discussing how additional meaning is given through coding. Yes, it's about her failure to conform to social expectations of womanhood, but because of the coded language of repression/disconnect between the public and private self/not recognizing one's physical body, it carries additional meaning for gay and trans people.

@Jazmine Parrott whoever's telling you that is wrong and not worth your time :) Art can be interpreted in so many different ways. If the song means something to you as a cis (I assume?) individual who doesn't wish to be hyper-feminine, or if it means something to you in any way, that's a valid interpretation. I don't think anyone in this comment thread is seeking to take that from you. Queer readings of media are difficult because the creator rarely comes out and says "oh yeah this is definitely queer coded," but when we see ourselves reflected in media it validates what so many people have told us we're wrong to feel. I think people can be a little defensive of media they find to be inherently queer. Media should be enjoyed by everyone, though, so don't let a few gatekeeping grumps keep you from identifying with a song that means something to you.

This isn't an "I Want" song, but one Disney song that's always sounded queer to me is "I See the Light" from Tangled. It gives off that vibe to me more than any other Disney love song. I think it's because Rapunzel sings about "watching from the windows" and "never really knowing just how blind I've been". To me, it feels like an allegory for a queer person growing up in a less accepting area, and then when they leave, they realize that all this time, there's been an entire world of people out there who will accept them for who they are. A world of people who will love them, and one person who's just for them. It really just hits me a lot harder than any other Disney love song because of that.

I don't know why but I find "show yourself" kind of a LGBT Anthem I Am I crazy?
@AllyGrac34 жыл бұрын
@@rim_on7362 I agree! "Show Yourself" is definitely an anthem and, as a bisexual woman, it honestly makes me tear up every time I listen to it or watch the scene. If Elsa's storyline in Frozen and "Let it Go" are about self-acceptance, then her storyline in Frozen II is about self-love. Not just accepting yourself, which she did in the prior movie, but loving yourself and being confident in your identity and abilities. Honestly an underrated song; I wish Disney marketed it more.
@oliviaruggiero9474 жыл бұрын
In all honesty, Tangled seems to be kind of a coming-out story (not just for Rapunzel getting out of the tower). When we meet our Adult Rapunzel, she’s asking about when will her life begin, something that many LGBTQ+ kids and adults often ask while stuck in really bad situations (i.e. bad home life, dangerous parents, unfamiliar territory). Mother Gothel sings to Rapunzel that she doesn’t need to be outside, because she’s not meant for it, while she goes out freely. A mother keeps her child from experiencing “the gays” and such, not realizing that her child should be loved for who they are. Flynn comes and takes Rapunzel away into the outside, and she has a realistic freak out moment: going back and forth between “this is great” to “this is horrible” and back. Wondering if this was the right choice. In the end, Rapunzel finds her family (real and found) and gets away from such a toxic life, which actually is her life just beginning. Can you tell this is my favorite Disney movie?
@taifal-ali51404 жыл бұрын
Rapunzel is Pan and nothing can change my mind! I kinda didn’t like her relationship with Eugene because when the movie came out I was already a teenager and I felt like the movie could be so great if she was gay since she doesn’t have the same outside homophobic influences that other people have

Makes sense; you would expect lesbian Dorothy to appear in darker settings first before entering the OUATverse some years later as the theme becomes more acceptable to audiences. I suspect that the intent in Supernatural was to deconstruct the Oz story, while OUAT builds a mythology of its own MCU-style. Something may be "edgy" in the former show and become a natural extension of the Oz mythos in the latter.

@Star_Rattler3 жыл бұрын
@@taniahylian3799 for sure I can understand that. for me the song is more about being left behind and being slower than others despite being "capable and smart" and of course dealing with having an absent or barely there father. so many songs like this I feel are either coming of age songs or neurodivergent/queercoded because all those things go hand in hand typically with lots of overlap. I love Jim's "I'm Still Here" because of my late ADHD diagnosis (at age 22) and having a lack of father so the whole movie really speaks to me, and also being behind my peers and being an outcast. neurodivergent and queer folks tend to be outcasts together. coming of age stuff really moves me especially because although I'll be turning 24 in just over a month, I still feel very young and childish and much less mature than my peers due to my ADHD. my emotional maturity is that of like a 17 year old and won't be fully developed until I'm like 38. so I really relate to stuff about struggling with responsibilities and opening new chapters and going on adventures that change you for the better and you grow from it. I could rant for a while longer but yeah.

as someone who most resonated with Beauty and the Beast growing up and especially Belle's "I want" song (and later on when I saw Mulan she became my n2) I can say that the "I want" songs are just that, longing for something you're yet to find and yet to achieve. I want something more than just my small hometown, I want something more than the world I grew up seeing. And I want to find the me that's inside of me. And I want others to see it too. I might have grown up with so called "not-like-other-girls syndrome" but I understand now that most of it was just me not hiding my insecurities like the others and marching to the beat of my own drum. I'm exploring my queerness now that I can and I'm just happy to be alive... and maybe I'm really not like other girls.. I'm experimenting with they/them pronouns and I think I like it honestly. Show Yourself from Frozen 2 is so underrated and that entire scene and song was my favorite.

The explanation is pretty much I'm the intro. They're songs about isolation and I want songs, those types of things resonate deeply with the somewhat isolated and wanting LGBT community.

Currently, I've been connecting to "Reflection" from Mulan. Not in the sense that I'm trans, I'm not, but in the sense that I've been questioning my sexual identity ever since I realized I had feelings for my friend who is the same sex as me. That's also why "I won't say I'm in love" from Hercules also resonated with me. Now, I'm standing at being Bicurious.

Thank you for this incredible video on this super important topic!! I think one of the frustrating things about Disney trying to claim so many ‘first’ LGBTQ characters is that they’re often so tiny and minor, that it feels like going backwards from the history talked about in this video. Like, maybe none of those video ‘I Want’ song protagonists were LGBTQ, but they were such an inspiration to the community, it feels like a step back with the kinds of ‘advances’ Disney would like to brag about today. Why not main characters in the community signing these types of songs? Anyway, again, thank you for this!

This isn’t really an “I want” song but Show Yourself is my absolute FAVORITE; from it being an answer to Let It Go where Elsa is comfortable with herself and her powers and finding her true self in Ahtohallan, with her mom singing “You are the one you’ve been waiting for” makes me cry so much any time I listen to it. :’)

"A part of your world" I'm still finding my identity but the song has always resonated with me because I've always related to the idea of feeling like others expect me to fit a preconceived idea of who I should be.

I'm a little bit late to this, but my *I want* song was Go the Distance from Hercules. Something about that song always gave me chills and a type of inspiration I've never felt before. It made me feel like I could have a hopeful future and how I could better and improve myself to be the person I've dreamed to be. Over the years, I realized that hoping to achieve a new sense of self is unneeded. As i grew up, I had different values, morals, even sexuality, music taste, etc, but I was still the same person deep inside. Hoping to be someone I knew I would never be hurt me mentally and physically, however I have been trying to better myself in ways that stay realistic and true to me. Go the Distance reminds me of all of these feelings I have stated. It reminds me of my childhood and the sense of love I got from the people around me. Now that I am older, I might not have that love as much, but I can reminisce in the memories of it while still being in the present. Thank you for making this video. It helped me analyze myself and think about things I have not talked much about. And thank you for reading this, as this is a very long response.

For me my biggest I want song is Go The Distance which still gets to me today. I like that it has an element of self confidence to it- like I know I can go the distance and I don’t care how far and when I get there you’ll see what I already know. It’s not the only one that does that or the only one I like but it’s definitely my favourite

Appropriately enough, the I Want song that always hit me the hardest was Part of Your World. I'm trans and the longing for a life on "the other side", so to speak, always clicked. It's a trend that I'm glad is continuing within musical theater. (Listen to Pulled from the Addams Family musical and tell me it isn't a coming out song)

I always felt that there was something more in Mulan's song than just wanting to save her father and express herself, I felt that she probably felt off with her body at some point. (Using She because that is what is used in the movie.) Btw your voice is so nice and soothing ;w;. I love the queer videos you do.

Mulan is more likely more of a tomboy then a trans or really just a active woman
@sullendragon89002 жыл бұрын
Oh, oh! Hi, I'm super duper not Chinese and have never studied enough to know when real Mulan might have lived or what differences in language there might be between now and then, BUT neither did Disney probably, lol. But my point is that in Mandarin, she and he are pronounced exactly the same, you can only tell the difference from context and/or when it's written down. So that might be a fun fact to stick in your brain and percolate around with genderqueer Mulan headcanons! :-)

May be worth looking at the music in Tangled the Series, specifically now that they completed Alan Menken’s EGOT. Specifically I’d look at anything sung by Cassandra, or in the case of I’d Give Anything, about Cassandra.

Howard Ashman helped write alot of Disney’s best songs and he was a victim of the AIDS crisis. It just makes his songs that more emotional and impactful for me to know when Ariel is singing about how she doesn’t belong and wants to be accepted it was really him saying those things. And although Let It Go and Show Yourself were not written by him it makes me feel the same way. As an LGBT person who loves musical theatre these songs made me feel more seen than any other. That’s why I will not tolerate any Ariel or Elsa slander they are my favs.

I didn't know I was bi when Frozen came out, but I always related to Elsa and her journey, including the song Let it Go (before it became ridiculously overplayed) Since the song was so overplayed, I hadn't heard it in awhile. My first listen to it post realizing I was bi and coming out to some people really resonated. "I'm never going back; the past is in the past." I saw Frozen 2 in theatres with another friend who's also bi, and we just about lost it when Elsa took her hair down. Iconic.

It doesn't strictly count, but there are two pop songs in "Treasure Planet" one plays over the credits, but the other, "I'm still here" functions super well as an I want song, even though it isn't sung by the character, and plays over a montage, it's actually quite touching.

I don’t know if many people know the song, I think it’s just in the stage adaptation of Aladdin, but “These Palace Walls” could be Jasmine’s want song, if you consider her the main character of Aladdin.

"Show Yourself" sounds so much like a self discovery of trans identity to me. She was hearing a voice that was telling her she isn't actually comfortable where she is in life and needs to learn something about herself, and through those discoveries was happier with herself, the voice was INSIDE her the whole time, LITERALLY transformed her, and she stayed living with people who understood her. "I have always been a fortress, cold secrets deep inside"/"I have always been so different, normal rules did not apply"/"Are you the one I've been looking for all of my life?"/"You are the one you've been waiting for (all of my life)"? LIKE C'MON. *C'MOOOON* try and tell me that doesn't sound like someone realizing they're trans and learning to accept themselves!
