oh my god this era was hell for me as a child with chronic migraines. My school friends would invite me to a movie and I had to make sure it was 2d otherwise I couldn’t go and I always felt like garbage and would get made fun of. I cannot overstate how excited I was when the 3d cinema experience obsession ended. I remember the dread I felt when I arrived to a screening I assumed was 2d, only to be handed those god awful “real D” glasses at the entrance.. never failed to make me sick

God I remember watching the One Direction movie in 3D in the cinema and it was really weird because all of their on stage segments and live performances were edited so obviously to work for 3D (the moment when the red and white balloons were thrown out during WMYB is seared into my memory) but the rest of the time when the boys went home and we just saw their off time, it was really weird since there was no point in it (although seeing Niall Horan on the tour bus in 3D mesmerised 9 y/o me)

One of the weirdest, most unnecessary 3D releases for a movie was Step Up 3. I still don't understand why a dance movie was released in 3D. There were a few gimmicky shots with balloons and bubbles but that was about it.

I remember really wanting to see Spy Kids 3D, and one day at Wal-Mart I saw Spy Kids 3 on the shelf for VHS. I begged my parents to get it for me, though I found it very amusing that they forgot to put the D on the box. We got home and I put it in my bedroom VCR and was shocked to discover that this version wasn't 3D at all! Apparently only the DVD version was in 3D. So came the point of begging my financially secure but stingy parents to buy a DVD player in the year of our lord 2004. Well, one day it finally happened and we got a cheap little DVD player and Spy Kids 3D. But alas, I was barely 7 years old and had never interacted with a DVD player before! I can't remember what it was, but I had trouble getting the movie to play. My older sister saw my frustration and responded with "Maybe God hates you for buying the same movie twice." For some reason that memory has stuck with me my whole life and I needed to share it.

3:05 So you're saying we're no more than a decade from another 3D movie trend? And God, Black Ops 1 always made me want one of those 3D TVs. Also on the 3DS, Metal Gear Solid 3D had a neat usage of 3D (spoiler warning for a 2004 game). The exact moment when Naked Snake gets his left eye shot at the torture scene near the end of the game, the 3D feature just straight up stops working for the rest of the game.

I don’t see 3D making a come back any time soon. We are finally in an era where innovators understand that convenience trumps all else for most people. Since the 60s companies based their innovation decisions on many things but one key one was science fiction. This belief that people in the world wanted to see a world closer to science fiction. A world where innovation for its own sake was king. When In reality people just want something that works well, is affordable, and convenient. Technology that makes things convenient, from the CD player to the smart phone, wins in the end. TV manufacturers are now concentrating on making more affordable TVs that introduce technology focused on improving user experience without sacrificing convenience. So they are focused on producing high contrast images(what is most pleasing to the eye). Things like advanced upscaling, HDR, OLED, mini LED, QDOT, local dimming, and the new MLA technology are what consumers want. Not gimmicks like 3D. This is also why VR will never be mainstream.

Watching this made me wonder, whether the current state of 3D movies varies from the country you are in. Because after watching the video, I got the impression that movies in 3D are generally less popular nowadays. Maybe I misunderstood, however here (In Germany) the reception of 3D and 2D is almost equal. Most people don't care whether the movie is 2D or 3D. Usually the time when the movie is shown is way more important. And all movies are usually shown in 2D and 3D 50:50 of the time. Would be interrested in knowing whether this is different in other parts of the world.

I hated how the 3D fad ruined The Hobbit by prioritizing the gimmick over the filmmaking. The Lord of the Rings movies were so creative and timeless in its techniques. But fast forward to 2012, you have Sir Ian McKellen crying alone in a green room. I never watched it in 3D either. Films that actually used 3D immersively were Coraline, Rango, James Cameron's Avatar and Martin Scorsese's Hugo, The How to Train Your Dragon Trilogy, Rise of the Guardians and the first Croods. Some of these had a great director at the helm while others on top of animation had the great Roger Deakins as a visual consultant, helping the films hold up visually both regular and 3D.

I wasn't allowed to watch Coraline as a kid (which I now understand) even though it came with my dad's blu-ray player. As an early 2000s born person, it reminds me of the time when I was a kid in the late 2000s to early 2010s after Avatar became the most financially successful movie of all time, every movie company forced this 3D stuff on us for the next few years, even going as far as to make 3D BluRays and the 3DS as you have iterated. Interesting, as your comment unlocked a similar memory for me. I had watched a limited subset of that at an amusement park while on holiday in the Gold Coast (probably WB Movie World) in 2010, that I believe was a 4D experience instead of just 3D, and that was the first time I learnt about the existence of different editions of books, especially famous ones that would get reprinted many MANY times. There was also a tiny element in the film that I wouldn't have thought about if I was just watching it in 2D, but in 3D, that got engrained enough into my mind to mix with a couple other figments to create a little element for an animated series idea I was inactively working on around that time, that element being an object or character which would later be scrapped a couple of times and have some elements carried over to a graphic novel idea I've been inactively working on since 2018. Edit: I had never watched the full film, only that limited 4D experience.

The “new” 3DS greatly improved the viewability of the 3D, where as long as it’s properly calibrated, sensors on the device will track your face and know where to angle the 3D. You have to do an initial calibration when setting it up, and then you can go back to the settings and redo it if you notice issues later. Certain games use it in really nice ways, like many games having their cutscenes animated in 3D, so while playing on my new 3DS LL, I like to turn it on for that spectacle at times, but it gives me a headache if I turn it on for too long, sadly. The face tracking makes it very usable except for that.

I remember when 3D movies started becoming extremely popular in the 2010's and people were doing the nerd glasses thing. I was one of those kids who loved mustaches, nerdy glasses, and poop emojis so I can totally relate to that era XD. My dad thought the idea was so cool, that he actually got a 3D TV that we had for a couple of years before he sold it to get an OLED TV that we have now. We still have two copies of avatar because one of them at 3d capabilities and the other was a regular bluray XD. I also remember how cool my 3ds was when it could do a 3d affect without glasses, and I actually still have my 3ds xl from 2012 that I play on. The 3d affect now hurts my eyes on it so I rarely use it. I know the new one has a better one, but I never bothered to upgrade because I really like my original one. 🥰

really wish they would toy around more with 3d i always found it interesting as a kid especially my first experience with avatar and always having trouble keeping my glasses on cuz theyd just fall right off but after that i had a short obsession with 3d to having my older brothers friend collecting 3d movies and glasses always hearing about how much he wants to experiment with 3d to wanting a 3ds for chirstmas and finally blessed with one on easter out of all holidays which i still have and always remember i have once a year thinking about how cool it was having a strange period in time that i got to experience first hand. lets just hope were still alive to see if 4d can be a real thing lmao

Yes for me it was the best period...I was in my early 20s and started earning some money which I saved and bought 2 of the first 3D TV's... A Sony for myself and a Samsung for my sibling... Super expensive at the time, but the craze was worth it. Had to also purchase a slim PS3, and a glasses kit.

I’m just popping in to say that the “New” 3DS had a much better 3D screen that could be viewed from any angle and didn’t give me headaches or eye strains like the original did. The 3D on the OG models did suck though and I never used it but I used the 3D on the “New” 3DS quite a bit.

I'm actually glad there's not a lot of 3d anymore, since I cannot see out of my right eye, resulting in 3d just not working for me. Since I can't see 3d, it makes me feel a bit left out. I wish someone could create a type of 3d that is all digital, and does not require 2 eyes in order to see it. When I saw star tours at disneyland, it wasn't as impactful for me as it might've been for other people, but I did notice something. When I looked at it without the glasses, I could see 2 images, but with the glasses, I only saw 1. 3d glasses do have an effect on me, and seeing star tours with the glasses was better than without, but I still couldn't see in 3d, since I was only able to see 1 image.
@wiquid

That’s how 3D glasses work. There are 2 images; one for each eye. The lens ‘removes’ the right image, and vice versa. That’s what gives it the 3D effect.

I can see out of both eyes and I still couldn't notice the 3D effect that much in movies... It always felt like an experimental gimmick, I could see a bit of 3D but it wasn't really impactful.

In the late 90s/early 00s, there was a weird scratch and sniff fad that literally no one talks about. There were tv events that you could get these scratch and sniff cards for. I think one of them was on Nickelodeon and rugrats was on the card? It’s such a vague memory at this point but I’d love to see someone do a deep dive on that

I got really severe migraines as a kid so a simple headache escalated quickly. I wish there had been some kind of warning on the box of 3DS's because I couldn't figure out why my head hurt so much and why it was hard to see. I only put the pieces together when I played for a long period of time and when I looked up everything was blurry and I had a pounding headache. It's safe to say I avoid 3D things like the plague now.

So my mom and I just watched the new Little Mermaid in 3D, we didn't know it was a 3D showing until we got handed the glasses. Thankfully it wasn't too jarring, I actually forgot it was a 3D showing halfway in. Sharkboy and Lavagirl was a trip to watch in 3D, but the Dark Knight Rises in 4D? With the moving seats and whatnot? That was wild

I remember going to see Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over in theaters with my family when I was little. This was back when 3D glasses were still the classic blue and red tinted kind. Like 2/3 of the way through the movie (pretty sure it was during the buildup to the fight scene at the end), Floop appears on screen and instructs the audience to remove their glasses. Confused looks all around, but when we took them off, our vision was "stained" in blue and red, so we could experience the 3D effect without glasses. That was pretty mind-blowing as a kid, perhaps among my favorite ever theater experiences, even if the movie itself wasn't great.

I wonder how much of this 3D stuff is going to become lost media. I'm sure the TV stuff already has. I believe there is a way you can view 3D movies through VR. But a lot of home releases used the Red & Blue glasses. I like to think there's some rich 3D enthusiast, collecting the film reels for these. I really liked 3D in this era. Particularly when movies didn't shove it in your face. And I love my 3DS!

Any of y'all remember when Nickelodeon made "smellovision" movies which were just scratch and sniff cards that came in the DVD case of the movie, and a little symbol would pop up on screen to tell you when to scratch and sniff a particular spot on the card? I only remember it coming with Rugrats Go Wild and being very disappointed that the "Phil's Feet" scratch and sniff section only smelled mildly bad. There was also a jar of jelly or peanutbutter I think, and that one was also disappointingly mild.

Omg, I just felt the nostalgia really hard. This was exactly my childhood / teenage years. While I'm from Europe, the development was almost the same as you described it in the video. I went to the cinema a lot with my parents and I think there were a few years where I only saw films in 3D. I still have a bag full of 3D glasses that I need to recycle, but I somehow missed the point a few years ago when I had less time and the pandemic came up. (We kept them after the film as I think our movie theater charged like 1€ for a new pair. Obviously we still always forgot them or went with friends so now I have like 20.) The 3DS was sadly out of our budget, but I remember that my cousin got it and I wanted it so badly - but only because it was the most gorgeous metallic blue🤣I played some Mario Kart on hers but I think I might've broken the record for the person with the fastest time to give up due to feeling sick because of the 3D, I didn't even make it through one round I think. The 4D cinemas I also remember, if in 30 years or so people look back on this decade they won't believe it. These are the weirdest stuff ever, not to mention the places you could find them. I was a very anxious child (and still have anxiety issues, look at that, how surprising), so everything that was that unpredictable and made to catch you a little bit off guard was the true horror to me. Yup, that's right: a normal 3D movie was fine but the pure thought of a movie theatre with moving seats scared the sh*t out of me🤣 Anyway, this didn't add much to the conversation but I just wanted to share my experiences and help the algorithm. Because I think your videos need more attention😊

I hated the 3D trend lol. Maybe most of that is attributed to having to wear prescription glasses underneath the 3D ones, but also almost every movie had a ham fisted 3D option and my groups of friends would always opt to go to the 3D one despite 3D not really adding a whole lot or much at all to the experience and also costing more

Come on y'all! Why so sad on 3D! Being born in 2005, this is what I remember; 1 OMG, those white 3d glasses in the background. Me and my sister had one of them, no idea where we got it, in our 'junk drawer' with all those other stupid toys from the early 2010s. 2 3D didn't die in the 2010s! I can vividly remember commercials saying "Now streaming in 2D and 3D in a cinema near you". For us Dutchies, going to the 3D version was paying a little extra for a little more, so culturally it always felt 50/50. You didn't really have to go to the 3D version, but it'd be better. For example this advertisment for the Dutch version of How To Train Your Dragon from 2014; kzbin.info/www/bejne/faHXlKatmbmif8k&ab_channel=DreamWorksAnimationNetherlands Or The Secret Life of Pets, I remember going to that in 3D in 2016 in a cinema in a town nearby. Movies were still expected to be in both 2D and 3D, at least here in the Netherlands. Basiclaly, being from 2005, I always thought that during the 2010s we went from 2D to 3D to 4D without ever having a drop in popularity.... Although for most cinemas 4D is too expensive, so I can understand most didn't adopt that, but most cinemas did adopt 3D though and kept using it far into the 2010s.
