Summary: In a dystopian future Earth, the area between New York and Boston has become a crime-ridden urban mass of 800 million people known as Mega City. Keeping the peace are combination policemen-judges who make the arrests, determine guilt and then execute the sentence. Judge Dredd is among the best at what he does and he is assigned a rookie, Cassandra Anderson, who did not meet the minimum requirements for the job but who has one talent most do not: she is a mutant with psychic abilities. They soon find themselves inside Peach Trees, a 200 story building that houses among many others Ma-Ma a gangster who produces the drug of choice in Mega City, slo-mo. Ma-Ma shuts the building down determined that Dredd and Anderson will never again see the light of day.

One of my favourite moments in this film is when you can see Dredd deciding to give Anderson a Pass. It's when she let's the Techie go and Dredd calls her up on it. Instead of making excuses Anderon acts like a Judge and just gets on with the job. Instead of overplaying it Urban just gives a kind of half-shrug and follows her. The fact she made a hardened perp pee his pants without laying a finger on him helped. :)

There was a time when three of the driving forces behind 2000AD (writers Pat Mills, Alan Grant and John Wagner) all lived in and around Colchester and, because I worked in the comic book store there, I got to know all three of them pretty well. I always remember bumping into John and Alan as they left the local cinema to watch the original Robocop, "Well, there's no point in making a Judge Dredd movie now," John told me, "because that's the best Dredd movie that will ever exist."

Given how old Dredd is in most of the comics even Karl Urban's age wouldn't work against him if they did a sequel. I'm not saying Urban is old or anything, but looking more aged would be fine for this character.

I remember watching the Stallone Dredd around when it came out, and thinking it seemed stupid in a bad way. But I recently learned that some of the more egregious changes, like Dredd constantly removing his helmet, were not because of, but in SPITE of Stallone; he had done research on the comic and thought removing the helmet was a bad idea. He also liked the idea of not having to put as much make-up on.

@@TheJMPD How about Fergie? In the comics Fergie was an idiot, not a hacker. He earned Dredds respect by sacrificing his life to save the city. And the scene at the end when Hershey kissed Dredd? That should have earned her a trip to Titan. (If she'd been wearing lipstick he would probably have wrote her up for "defacing justice department property" if she'd left a mark on Dredd as well.) I find it a fun movie if taken as "Stallone and Pals doing high end Judge Dredd cosplay", but as an actual adaptation of the source material it's awful.

Still so much better than the Sylvester Stallone version. Karl Urban knew well you just did NOT see Dredd's face!! And the producers knew that Dredd did NOT need a comic relief partner! But then, Urban IS the same guy who played Leonard "Bones" McCoy in the JJ Abrams Star Drek movies, and ... the dichotomy is just strange. /snerk

Just my 2 cents but the best part of this movie was that Dredd never took his helmet off. I've always had a problem where the hero is supposed to be in a mask or something but at the end of movie the mask is gone. The Shadow, Robocop Batman Returns, (both Batman and Catwoman) the first 3 Spiderman movies (why take your mask off in front of Doc Ock?) and to as lesser degree, Spawn, to name a few. I think it hurts the illusion when we see the actor's face when it is not necessary. And it might have more to do with the actor's ego than anything to help the story.

I am not a fan of JD and I hated the SS version so I did not know what to expect going into this one (and did not see it in theaters precisely because of the SS version). I was mildly disappointed due to it being just another drug bust until Dredd actually said this at the end (or something similar). The movie knows it's just a cop procedural so it grew in my esteem a bit. Upon multiple viewings I grew to like it more.

"So, what happened in there?" "Drug bust." "Looks like you've been through it." "Perps were ... uncooperative." I just love how it's such a nonchalant understatement. As a Krill tro Thargo I loved this film. It's pretty much flawless. I must confess though, I have a soft spot for the 95 film. The aesthetics are amazing. And whilst it is a bit silly, plenty of the source material was too. Thats the joy of Dread. You can have something as serious as "letter from a democrat" to something as daft as Dredd busting up a disco to the tune of Anthrax's 'I am the law". What I also find interesting is that, in the first Judge Dredd annual back in the day, he throws the antagonist off of a tall building. I wonder if that was in the mind of the screenwriter?

I finally got to see this film tonight (via streaming). I'm glad I saw it, but I don't think it deserves all the praise that gets heaped upon it by its advocates. I think it did need some of the satire, not just because of the source material, but also because without it it's mostly a bunch of people doing unpleasant things to other people who do unpleasant things. We get tiny glimpses of other people's lives, attitudes, and reactions, but they're mostly just background cannon fodder. However, I did like how they handled Thirlby's character, and I absolutely agree with Robin's conclusion that it feels like there'd be a more interesting sequel to come.

Comics were never really a thing for me growing up, I watched my fair share of cartoons so don't have any issues with the form of storytelling. Because I had to investment in Dredd I actually enjoyed the Stallone version although I will admit that this one is better. They are very different in tone so you could compare The Stallone one to the Burton Batman and the Urban one to Nolan. As with Nicholson's portrayal of the Joker, Assante's Rico was a great villain which is needed to elevate the hero. Urban has the talent and more importantly, the passion to do another dread, caring about the source material and not just the pay check. While I don't think he could do it better I still want to throw John Brolin's name into that hat.

This film does set up the Megacity universe well. The drawback to a sequel is the suffer by comparison from the original.

I thought the movie was just Judge Dredd in a Die Hard clone. It’s no wonder it failed.

Even though the story it was based on predated the Die Hard film by several years.

I'm still mad at myself for not supporting this one in the theaters. While a mild ripoff of The Raid, it's a perfect action film. I've watched it countless times. This one deserves a sequel, and if it ever happened, I'd be first in line.

It's not fair to call this even a "mild" ripoff of The Raid, Dredd may have released later but it had finishing filming and was in post-production before The Raid even STARTED filming.

Dredd was based on a script started in 2006 and based on a comic story from 1982. The director of The Raid was working on a script (that became The Raid 2) when the script to Dredd was leaked onto the net in 2010.

I feel like the oddman out, because I enjoyed the 1995 movie. Then again, I always had an issue with the overt racism of the comic, and thought the 1995 film was a step up.

Racism? Dredd cares not about colour, creed, religion or species. If you break the law, he breaks you.

@@HappyCynic I have several books that feature some horrifically bad racist stereotypes about asians, italians and anyone with dark skin. Admittedly, almost all of them were written by Alan Moore. I don't think I have a non-moore collection.

I didn't like this one at all. Felt like a Mad Max/Die Hard hybrid more than anything. The Stallone version is at least enjoyable as a so-bad-it's-good film. Harlan Ellison trashed Robocop as a Dredd ripoff and even suggested the creators had grounds for a lawsuit.

I did not like it, right from "the perfectly cast Karl Urban". "We're here to see him not change, to see him not be affected by the story". Keep trying, you're almost there. "It helps to have the other one there to go on an emotional journey"... on the brink of an epiphany... "But we're here for Judge Dreed." Is it the franchise, is it the pseudo Fascism? What about this IP makes smart people dumb? I WAS ROOTING FOR LENA HEADLEY.

@HappyCynic less supercop, more slasher villain? Then shouldn't Dredd be going after residents? That would make more sense as the movie was a home invasion plot.

We're meant to take this seriously but there's a character who's psychic. She works with a character who is every dirty cop/militia member/war criminal's wet dream. I'm guessing without what made Robocop great. Thanks anyway.
