Honda CX500 Cafe Racer Build 29 - DIY carb manifold boot fix and clean

So we all face that problem that when we get old things break, that's no different to a motorcycle manifold boot, cracks appear and if it's not too bad we can try to avoid them getting worse. Here I see if a heat shrink rubber & gasket sealer will give me a little longer with these carb boots.

I work in the automotive world with a focus on electronics. So I use a LOT of heat shrink and I had no idea that you could get heat shrink that large. Thanks for sharing with us. Now I know how I'm going to "repair" my intake boots.

OK,I'm happy to be called an idiot, where did you get the rubber from? Lots on the Web but mainly for wiring, when I find one for fuel its either 50mm,too narrow or 60 mm too wide, help!

I really like your videos. I am acutally a bike mechanic, currently working on my own BMW K100 (well, for the last 4 years now). Some things I would never do as you do, but as long as it works, its good. Your videos are really well made! I've repaired many carb intake boots and I've been using this omnivisc silicone stuff to glue the cracks, you might want to give it a try next time, it's transparent but pretty expensive. Anyway, keep up the good work!
@forthebold
@forthebold 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. That silicone is expensive. Nearly the price of new manifold boots.

I know, but even in the shop one tube is enough for a few months and I use it on many bikes for everything, like oil pans etc etc. So for someone with only 3 or 4 bikes it's probably gonna last years :D

The shrink tube is a grandiose idea and seems to work just fine (even improves looks). With the hairline crack you're dealing with I was a little worried about you taking a heat gun to it. Excess heat isn't optimal for aging rubber parts. One of my friends religiously cares for his rubber bike parts by coating them with DuPont Teflon Silicone lubricant (treating everything once a season; small bottle sells for $7 here in the US) which really works wonders maintaining rubber in good condition forever. I'm sure some silicon lubricant treatment will save the rubber hose if it's not totally cracked open.
@forthebold
@forthebold 6 жыл бұрын
The heat gun is minimal heat to get this rubber so luckily the boot wasn't heating up at all, this stuff reacts amazingly. I'll check out that lubricant

Here in the US we have a product called liquid tape. It is a rubberized coating used for sealing electrical connections, is black, remains flexible and useful for high heat applications. Would make a good coating to bond to and seal the intake boot.

Cool and ingenious solution for a tiny but costly problem. Really curious if it will be durable. I really hope the GS and CX will reach completion soon, would love to see them on the road. There are still some lithium battery vendors offering batteries without a built in BMS (Battery Management System) or any internal safety protection devices. Batteries that do not include inbuilt Battery Management Systems and protection circuitry have unfortunately tarnished Lithium batteries reputation for reliability and confused customer expectations on what life span that they should expect from a lithium battery. Hopefully batteries without inbuilt BMS systems will shortly become a thing of the past.
