Great video, I have few questions.. 1. Is that Dremel flex shaft that you are using? 2. How do you control the burrs in here so that it doesn't shiver(hope that male sense)? I work with Dremel flex shaft, I have tried engraving on a metal but it's just I can control the movement, it tends to draw unnecessary lines in different directions even though I try on a minimum speed. Your movements here are like you are drawing on a paper..

Hey Criss, thanks for watching my video. Yes I am using my Dremel flexshaft in this video. Dremel is rough running tool to begin with and sometimes I tend to death grip the handle in order to make sure that it doesn’t jump or shiver. Type of bur that you’re using can also be the culprit. I used to use Diamond burs to engrave metal water bottles and such and I found them to be the smoothest but not long lasting. I found Fox Germany Tungsten Carbide burs to be the best on metal cups and I’ve been using them ever since. What types of bur are you using in your projects? My speed is always set to around 25k and I don’t go over 30k. Although faster you go the smoother the cutting should be, slower you go the jumpier it gets. Keep in mind that at higher speeds burs tend to heat up faster and wear out at a faster rate as well.

Thanks for all the videos. I finally etched my first tumbler! Do you take lots of breaks? I haven't found the proper position without having my neck and back sore all the time.

Congrats on making your first engraved tumbler Meigan! It can definitely get painful after a while, I take a few breaks here and there. I might do one side and do another the next day, all depends on the timeline and when someone wants it done by. Sometimes I’ll power through and get the whole cup done in one night. As far as neck pain, maybe try using a pillow to support your arm as you’re engraving, any little support can go a long way. Funny enough, I think I grew my trap muscles over time because how I had to hold my arms up and hold them in position for long periods of time.

I am a calligrapher and have an engraver that is not a Dremel. I have only used diamond burrs. Would they work for this application? Thanks!

Hey Amy, as long as the cup is painted you should have no problems engraving. Check out my Diamond bur cup engraving video, I show different types of water bottles and how Diamond bur reacts to each one.

The burs I have are the diamond ones that come with the dremel tool thing. What speed should I go and another thing I'm trying to do it free hand since I don't have a way to transfer drawing s..

I typically stay around 25,000 rpm for diamond burs because it’s basically sandpaper. As far as using transfer paper, you don’t have to use it if you cannot afford it. I started out by drawing my images on the cup by hand with a pencil then engraved it after. It’s all up to you on how you want to do it. I have a video on diamond burs engraving, check it out for a reference if you haven’t already.
