Why I wont be releasing my Dremel lathe.
tl;dr, a dremel has to high RPM, to low torque to be good for wood turning. I felt very unsafe using it.

My name is Chris, I am a 3D printing hobbyist from australia. I dont really specialise in anything specific, but 3D printed tools and tabletop accessories are some things youll probably seen quiet often. I do all my 3d printing on a Ender 3, which I highly recommend as a budget printer. Currently I only run 1 printer but I hope to expand that in the future. Recently acquired a photon 0 to do resin printing with. I like to share all my 3D printing ideas for free although I do plan to sell stuff in the future. Most of my projects will be mostly 3D printed with a few non printed components included, these can often be found on ebay. I actually use the cheapest filament I can get for all my projects, again I hope to change this in the future.

I guessed that would be the issue when i saw the title :P You could adapt the way "Flap sanding attachment for rotary tool" on thingiverse attaches to the rotary tool to be a drive pulley, then do a 1:25 reduction to get a top speed of 1400rpm before going to the lathe. Should gain more torque on the low end as well and might useful since i think more people have rotary tools laying around than have the type of motor you are using normally.

@@Borgedesigns Very cool! I dont have an area where i could use a lathe since i live in an apartment without a workshop room but im still following this development with interest :)

I have a full-size wood lathe but would like a small desktop version, I have been looking at the small ones used for pen turning, it will be used mostly for turning fishing floats from Balsa wood using sandpaper, I currently just put stock into my drill and turn it that way but would prefer a fixed solution

I was thinking of doing this but my idea had a pulley to remove a lot of the stress from the shaft and to make it spin with more torque

But how would this work as a mini metal lathe, shaping rods a few millimetres wide?

Safety first👌🏻 the eta of my Chuck is around half January. I’ll be almost finished with the build belt driven version by then. Where do I send the pictures? :p

thingiverse has a built it section where you could send them, or something like twitter perhaps?

Completely understand being spooked off of this. I do wonder if the speed and fast disengage concerns could be worked out with a belt or gear 10:1 reducer. The linkage could only engage to turn the headstock when the foot pedal/lever/etc was engaged. Bonus points if it could also control the power coming to the Dremel. Either way, thank you for giving this a shot and discovering this!

Yeah im experimenting with using the dremel through a belt atm, I just wanted to try out this version because its so popular on thingiverse

Add planetary gear boxes reducing rpm and increase torque.

Or even a belt and pulley system.

what if you made a gear box to reduce speed and increase torque? Very new just a question from a noob :D

Sorry for late reply, I could do that but I feel it takes away from the benefit of using a dremel, that being that its very easy to setup since it already has the chuck on it, with a gearbox and another chuck it make the project way more complex than I think it needs to be.

Put the dremel on the side with a 8:1 belt reduction

Why don't you 3D print some gears and gear the RPMs down to a reasonable rate?

Printing a 43mm neck holder and body support for a cheap corded(15-20£/$ chinese or a 30-40£/$ ryobi)drill could make a machine like this a much more viable proposition...
