I’d love to see more films like this on eels and other species well done

Me and my 10 year old son have caught some cracking eels from the river Esk, here in Whitby over the years. Nothing over 2lb but we remember catching them thats for sure! It is absolutely mindblowing to know that there could be some monster eels such as shown here, further upstream somewhere........ This video is masterly in its delivery and shows that patience, skill, experience and the desire to be fishing has its rewards eventually...............;)

As a teenager growing up in west London in the 1970's I used to fish the Grand Union Canal all the time. I will never forget one particular night fishing session when I caught a big eel by design, pigs liver on a light ledger rig !! 4lb 10oz it weighed and what a fight !! I returned it successfully without harm, but I wish I had a camera/smartphone to record it !!

I've been fishing for eels for 48 years now. The largest I've landed is 6 3/4 lb on a drain just north of Cambridge. I fish Hunstrete for them in late summer and have had a few results. My favourite place was the tidal Thames from Teddington down to Chiswick. In the seventies we hooked a couple of monsters but the biggest netted was just over five pounds. This guy is a delight to watch and learn from. It's never too late to pick up new tips. It's a shame that eels are now classed as endangered, I believe that is down to elver fishing.

Fantastic piece of film. Absolutely boils down as to why we get so obsessed with fishing. It's just not so the catching but everything entailed in between. I’ve always had a negative attitude to eels … like a lot of anglers…. They are slimy and they ruin your rigs as they twist and knot everything up … it was only when for some strange reason I just typed in specimen eel fishing on KZbin and seen this video that made me realise that not everyone feels the same and made me Think why many people don’t like them including myself … watching this video has certainly made me see things in a different light. What an amazing video and what an amazing passion he has for this remarkable fish…… I salute you sir and thank you for making me think differently about this fish. Many years ago fishing the Colne Valley pits for Tench with short rigs and an in-line feeder with maggots told me everything I needed to about lip hooking eels. Every bite was self hooked on the bottoms lip. A few pints of dead maggots a day or two before fishing was deadly, no more deep hooking or missed bites. Been trying ever since to spread the word . Good video.

I remember seeing one in Windermere, when I was leaning over to pull the anchor up out of a gigantic bed of elodea canadensis one morning. I could only see a foot of it through a hole in the weeds and it was so huge it took me a few minutes to figure out what exactly it was, even though it was only a few feet down in gin clear water. It was a good three inches across its back! When it snaked off I could only guess at the length of it. That was over thirty years ago but there are some sights you never forget. I never told anyone at the time because I wouldn't want to be responsible for a creature that age ending up gut hooked.

Eels are a wonderful species, I remember as a kid they were so common, I do not know about everywhere but where I fish now compared to all those years ago, they are non-existant :o(. Even here where I have now moved to Germany to explore un fished huge woodland lakes here, the eel numbers are apparently much lower than years ago. I have had two amazing fish in my life that stood out, one was a 4lb13oz perch and one was a 13lb 11oz tench. I've had carp to 81lb all over the world over the last 40 years or so but those two again from my childhood are the ones I will never forget. To see a 10lb eel would blow my mind, such an amazing creature. Their life is amazing

There was a Massive clay pit that was part of the local angling association Which seemed devoid of fish apart from carp that were notoriously difficult to catch. Apart from carp anglers one old boy fished it for enormous Roach every week of the year (His worst run was 18 blanks in a row).I put some time in at the venue trying for the fabled big Bream.During my many sessions I got to know Frank and we would chat during the many countless hours of inactivity. One time we got on the subject of Eels and he said he hooked one and nearly got it to his net that was the biggest Eel he had ever seen and he had caught a lot of specimens over the years. In all my sessions I managed two big Bream, a handfull of small perch and a few Eels.Even at dusk or dawn you never saw a fish rise. The other weird thing was we used to do a lot of plugging for pike in winter and decided to try the pit,I wasn't hopeful as it seemed to have such a small population of fish, We ended up having a great session with loads of jacks and a couple of decent ones?
