In 1941 I was evacuated from London to the countryside when our countries were in conflict. I was taken along to the harvest where a traction engine and threshing machine was used. I was sun burned, ate cheese and bread for lunch and a sneaky swig of home made cider. What memories. I love the video

I do like watching your videos. Coming from a family of farmers I still fondly remember as a kid going to numerous steam and antique tractor shows. But, it's really the sounds always take me back and what I appreciate the most. Your videos capture the imagery very well and are amoungst the best a recording the soundscape. In listening I can recall the not just the sounds but the smells of diesel, belt dressing, the scent of fresh straw.... the itch of the wheat chaff on the back of my neck. The cool feel of the wheat in the bin and how it tasted... Thanks for providing the touchstone back to past memories.

@@jonk0186 Das waren die ganz alten, die entweder kein Getriebe oder keinen Rückwärtsgang hatten. The rims aren't flat, they are slightly curved towards the outside. When the whole thing spins and because of the belts tension, the belt automatically moves to the rims largest diameter, so into the very middle of the rim.

It's not possible to control the movement of such a machine with sufficient precision to tighten the belt by driving the machine. I'm a farmer, and although I have never used any machinery as old as the ones in this video, I have newer ones, MODERN ONES, and you simply cannot control their movements so precisely. So you position the machine, and try to fit the belt. Getting it to exactly the right spot might take three or four tries. That belt is VERY heavy, and long. Putting it on is EXPECTED to be a tough piece of work for a couple of tough men.

From what little I've learned watching these, it's heating up the 'hot bulb' which apparently then ignites the mixture during the compression stroke, kind of like a model glow/nitro engine's glow plug. Once the engine is running, the 'hot bulb' is kept at temperature from the engine's own combustion.

I remember these threshing machines in the '50s, very hard, dusty, and noisy work but I was always fascinated by them. A very exciting day on the farm when the machine and all the workers came around. Grandmaw and Mom would cook for as many as 20 people. The wheat was cut with a binder and placed in shocks, when the threshing machine showed, we gathered the wheat on wagons and hauled it to the machine. The straw was just blown into a stack rather than bailed and sometimes fed to the cattle when they would eat it. There was not a viable market for straw at that time.
As usual, your videos are crystal clear, steady, interesting and informative!
