Dresden 1946: The Mysterious Case of The Cannibal | Crime in Post-War Germany | Documentary

Germany after the World War II. A country is in a state of emergency. Characterized by hunger and hardship, crime becomes worse and more brutal.
In 1945, the Soviet Union occupied East Germany and divided Berlin into four sectors. Thousands of Berliners ventured into the countryside to find food, but a serial killer in the surrounding forests threatened their safety. In the city, the Gladow gang played a dangerous game of cat and mouse with the police.
But the peak of the crime occurred in Dresden, where one of the most brutal criminal cases of the post-war period caused horror and raised the question of a cannibal.
The documentary sheds light on how people act in extreme situations and how the war influenced attitudes towards law and morality. Overall, it shows how dangerous everyday life was in the Soviet occupation zone and in Berlin after 1945, and explains why survivors of the war resorted to extreme measures.
The documentary Crime in Post-War Germany shows how strained life was between 1945 and 1949 in the four occupied zones. Using the example of individual, particularly serious criminal cases, like in Dresden where a wood collector comes across the severed legs of a person or in Hamburg, where the so-called rubble murders terrify the whole city.
Criminal psychologists and forensic experts set out to search for clues and analyze the brutal crimes. Historians and witnesses describe the state of emergency of the late 1940s which ended with the founding of two German states.

Fascinating !....despite it all ,it remains a miracle how Germany got back on her feet after about ten years. Which might be because of the Germans' inherent industrial "gründlichkeit" . It's a miracle how her society not completely disintegrated after the unprecedented slaughter and destruction. The few cases mentioned here are a pinprick compared to violence and crime in Germany's western occupiers.

Land reform. Has it ever really worked out the way it was supposed to? Here the Russians dump anyone and their dog on a bit of land and say Have at it. Fast forward to Rhodesia, soon to be Zimbabwe. Lots of people got land after the new regime took over. Same thing, different day. Agricultural production dropped into the sewer. The vast majority had absolutely no clue what to do.

Don’t think it was limited to Germans! There was a woman who managed to stay quite energetic and plump through the siege of Stalingrad. How? She took in babies and most of them got typhus or pneumonia and “died.” What about the Uruguayan soccer team in the Andes plane crash? The Donner Party? American soldiers turned to beasts in a number of instances in Vietnam. I don’t know about cannibalism, but there were GI’s who kept strings of VC ears and reports of downed airmen being eaten by VC and K’mer Rouge.
