The recent bans on ripped jeans and directives from colleges enforcing a dress code in colleges has left many students fuming. We went to SNDT women's college to speak to students about whether or not they supported the ban on ripped jeans.

Our college also had a rule that girls could wear only salwar suits but there was no such dress code for guys and all the girls and also guys protested and the day the ban was lifted it was such a powerful feeling ! It was 10years ago and it's sad that even now the same problem . Dressing decently and professionally has nothing to do with wearing jeans or skirts.The problem lies in the perception of our society and we have a lot of issues that authorities should focus on instead of wasting time on banning jeans! In fact I think saree is the most revealing outfit and I am most uncomfortable when I wear a saree ! But the decision of what clothes a woman wants to wear should be her own and not what society or authorities impose on her. Regardless of what one is wearing it may be saree ,hijab, salwar, jeans, skirt , dress, bikini etc etc woman should be treated with respect!

DISCLAIMER I am not against girls/women wearing anything of their choice in public. Now my opinion Colleges, schools, offices etc. are all institutions. Once you're in an institution, things begin to change. There are proper uniforms in schools and a proper dress code in offices (In my father's office, having a shaved face, a proper haircut, and a tie is a must). These things change with institutions and are only present to show a sense of respect and uniformity towards the institution. I don't think there's anything wrong with this. Once you're out of the institution, you can wear anything you want. Just to give an exaggerated example to bring things in perspective, Imagine what would happen if police started demanding for the same thing.

There's also a big difference that you missed. In schools and colleges, you pay them whereas in office they pay you. When you are the one giving them money, they can not control you in any way. If they are paying you money, then they can still control you or else they will fire you. Police are being paid by the govt. So, the govt. decides what dress code to give in the police department. You can not compare an official dress code with a college, private tutions or even IITJEE coaching centers!

Harshajyoti Das - Its not about who's paying whom. As per you they are paying the college so they can wear whatever they want? Is is so? For your information my friend, they are paying the college to get themselves educated not to wear whatever they want. The fact that they are paying the college does not give them the right to wear whatever they want. What if tomorrow students want roam naked in the campus? As per you they shall be allowed to do so as they are the one who is paying?? :P One of the rationale behind uniforms introduced at workplaces/schools was to implant a sense equality and stop discrimination/Team building. Which was further liberalized, evolved and that is what we have today in the form of dress codes.Discipline and decorum comes above all; and shall be applicable to both the genders.

If you are fuming over this, then what will be your reaction to uniforms in colleges? Many colleges in Andhra Pradhesh, Telangan and Tamil Nadu have UNIFORMS at UG and even PG level. And this has been the case since 2007.

No you idiot! Respect for institute is NOT a must. Remember that the MONEY to institution is coming from the STUDENT. If institute imposes these types of horrible policies, then students will no longer provide any money to the institute....not even a single rupee. The institution will fail and go out of business if students do not attend the institute.

Tech Tips In India we want to roam in the clothes we r comfortable wd so that our clothes don’t distract us n we focus on what we go there to do, yeah right that is studying. Coming in a jeans in a women’s university In a urban area of Mumbai(Santacruz) should not b a problem. People who have always worn clothes of their brothers or dad( basically tomboy chicks), we don’t feel we will b comfortable in kurta or some think like that carrying containers, drafters, bags, sports kit n what not n travel in the office hours through trains. We think comfort should b our priority as we r working on our personalities n exploring our choices and not restricting them
