In this video I discuss some stretches you can do to help you improve your range of motion in your ankle to allow your heel to naturally drop lower in the stirrup.
When we have stiff ankles and muscles around this area it can create a blockage, that blockage then affects how well your body is able to absorb the horses movement.
So try these simple exercises out to help improve your ankle range of motion and ultimately notice how it impacts your heel position.

So helpful, my biggest struggle is trying to keep my heals down and my instructor said “ I don’t know what you did from last lesson to now but your heals are perfect and keep doing it”

I don't do dressage I jump But this will still help me as I use my knees more than putting weight into the stirrups so I go flying occasionally as its not centering gravity so Thanks x

I started riding 5 months ago, and the only thing that is holding me back is my heels. According to my instructor, everything else (posting, planning, reign work, leg work, steering, etc) is perfect. I will definitely start doing this every day. Thank you so much!

I just started riding at a local horse therapy center and this is this is one thing I struggle to keep during the sessions. I will definitely try doing this exercise

Update: After doing this exercise for a few days, I already see a lot of improvement with me being able to keep my heels down without having to force them. So I would definitely recommend trying this exercise if you’re struggling keeping your heels down while riding. I have also found it nice to play some music while doing this exercise too

My trainer suggested that I put my toes on the edge of my stairs and let my heels drop, it’s actually my favourite calf stretch since it allows my heels to get deep and fall low
