Omg this video helped me a lot! I’m coming to Fairbanks this coming week and I’m terrified of not being prepared enough. Coming from the east coast and having never experienced below 0 temperatures, I’m overwhelmed as to where even begin at. I wish you had shared the specific brands of each item you shared to give us a better idea. Thanks a lot!
@AshleyRoberts803 жыл бұрын
Happy to hear this video helped you! A good place to find these items is REI. The Smartwool brand has wool/synthetic blend socks, base layers, and neck warmers. The Kavik brand makes heavy duty parkas. My white puffy parka is by Northface, the lighter one is Columbia. Boots are by Kamik and Baffin. There are two stores in Fairbanks that I recommend: Big Ray's and Prospectors. They will have all the items or similar items listed above. I've also linked to a few specific things in the comments below. Enjoy your time in Fairbanks!

Hi can you help me where to buy for one time use good jackets and boots , does our normal boots from timberland works or we need specific boots ?
@Jess_Smith09033 жыл бұрын
@@anshulgupta9203 i was there in the beginning of this month and I wore Merrell snow boots but my boyfriend wore waterproof hiking boots that’s in no way rated for snow. The most important thing is the socks you wear! He wore wool socks and did just fine! I believe if you invest in wool and take a couple packs of feet warmer you will do just fine! Just take the best pair of boots you own, but after being there I’d say to not drop a bill on new boots just for one trip! The only part he was afraid of, was when we went to the Castner Glacier, because we had to hike 1.5 mile in deep snow and his boots were low cut, yet it worked! So...

Hi. Great video. How do you keep your wool from shrinking? and any recommendations on non itchy wool? TIA
@AshleyRoberts804 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Great questions. I wash my wool clothes in cold water and then lay flat or drap over a bar to air dry. The REI Co-op and Smartwool brands make clothes with Merino wool. Merino wool is the soft kind of wool and is not itchy against the skin.

Hi there! I’m coming to Fairbanks in November this year… my husband and I were thinking of purchasing heated gear… do you think it’s necessary or no? We are from California and aren’t used to cold temperatures lol 😂 please let me know. We found battery operated heater jackets and thermals… just curious of what you thought about it. I haven’t seen anyone in Alaska advertise that they wear it.
@AshleyRoberts803 жыл бұрын
Hi! I don't think battery operated gear is necessary. I personally never used it and I don't know anyone in Alaska who has either. I have used these hand and foot warmers and they worked well if I needed something a little extra. www.amazon.com/HotHands-Hand-Body-Warmer-Variety/dp/B004R1J464/ref=zg_bs_14332911_25?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=6RSRCN3WX0EVEMXKXM70 Just make sure you bring synthetic thermals (polyester or wool is good/ no cotton blends) and layer up 🙂 Enjoy your time in Fairbanks!
@vernishahymon53053 жыл бұрын
@@AshleyRoberts80 thank you so much! This helps a ton! And your video helps a ton as well! Yes I found all synthetic/polyester material as a base layer and also found thicker insulated snow bibs from refrigiwear… so that should keep us nice and warm… I did also get some snow bibs (ski outfit) that are thinner and insulated in case it’s not too cold and we need something lighter… we are coming the end of November from the 18th-24th what’s the weather usually like around that time? Everything I’ve found on KZbin shows below zero. I really appreciate your help!
@AshleyRoberts803 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! I'm so glad the video was helpful for you! Your clothing options look good. The temperature in Fairbanks area during the day in November usually ranges anywhere from 20°F to 0°F. The low temps during the night may dip into the negatives.

The lighter gray boots rated to -20F are Kamik brand. I got them over 5 years ago, but here is a similar boot: www.kamik.com/collections/winter-boots/products/hannah-mid?variant=34323732496521 The heavier black boots rated to -40F are Baffin brand: Jess boot - www.baffin.com/products/litew016?variant=8584565915699

what is an extended period of time? e.g. 1 hour or 5 hours
@AshleyRoberts803 жыл бұрын
Personally, if it's around -15F to -30F and I'm wearing all the layers that I showed (and I'm not moving a lot, then an extended period of time is about 15 minutes. If I'm moving a lot, then I could be out just a little longer. I could stay out for maybe an hour or so if the temps were around 15 - 20F. If you need to be outside at -20 or below for longer than 30 minutes, then I recommend buying (or renting if you're just visiting) a heavy duty parka like Kavik that has a fill of 550 or higher, or adding more layers.

Hi! The fingerless flip mittens are Smartwool brand. The fleece lined mittens are Gordini brand. The neck warmer is Turtlefur brand. I got both of the mittens at a store in Fairbanks called Prospector Outfitters www.prospectoroutfitters.com/ The neck warmer is from a store called Big Ray's in Fairbanks www.bigrays.com/ You should be able to find any of these items or something similar at REI or any other outdoor clothing store.
