This is my remote cabin in middle of the Alaska Range. It is completely off grid. This video shows the routine of arriving at, and opening up this cabin during the winter months.

Just an idea: In Germany some restaurants have a semicircular heavy curtain just inside of the door to keep the cold from entering during the cold winter days. This curtain is hung from the ceiling on a strongly fastoned rack, and works great to keep that chill out. Might work well in your cabin there.

Reminds me of the life I had up in the Carpathians mountains in an old log cabin where i didn't had not even a fireplace or stove. Had to prepare my food outside using an old barrel in which i used to make fire. Inside the cabin was cold as heck. Showers were with cold water or snow. But guess what? Didn't even had a simple cold, or a tooth ache or anything. I moved back to the city after my training session, found hot water and gas at my reach and i started to have cold, flues, tooth aches, knees problems. I know that living up in the mountains is tough (even a nightmare for some people), but its all so dang beautiful. I miss that time, so next year i'm gonna move to an old friend's farm up in mountains. And i'm gonna take snow showers again :) God bless you, my friend :)

Good evening Radu. Well this is wonderful. I almost want to go with you, and could not agree more with your sentiments. I have a dear old native friend here that lives with his wife in a shanty on the bank of the Yukon River, hundreds of miles from the nearest town. He is also very wealthy. Last year I asked him why they didn't move to some tropical beach and this was what he said, "We have traveled all over the world and could live anywhere we wanted to, but there is simply no better place than here on shores of the Yukon River." I love their view of life. The things they valued were not associated with money at all. Peace to you from Alaska.

I saw a comment about shoveling snow. When I lived in Alaska I found it very therapeutic to shovel the driveway. I had a snow blower but often I shoveled it. It was magic. The cabin you see here is luxury and looks very new with all the mod cons. Would be ideal. Even a more modest place is still heaven. What you are not seeing is the wildlife that passes by. Moose, birds squirrels occasional bear. It is heaven on earth.

I know this looks like a very idealistic life, so peaceful and serene and away from the rat race. However, in reality, I think this would be a very hard life to be so remote and dealing with the harshness of choosing this life style, especially for a long time. Most people are not really cut out or would know how to live out there, the eveyday things you bave to do to survive, etc. Yes, some people could, but in reality most could not for very long.

@@MakeB711 Hello my friend. I would be happy to discuss your questions and try to provide some answers. There are resources I would direct you to in regards to finding and purchasing remote property. This particular property does not have property tax but many other pieces will. There are few rules for construction of a single-family homes built outside of the cities. Building a cabin takes a time commitment and a some money too. There are lots of things that have to be purchased. That said, I think it is a middle-class kind of thing, a dream in reach of many people if they want it bad enough. Good afternoon Debbie. I love those stories. I grew up on the outskirts of Nenana. We hauled our water from the creek, a mile or so away, we heated only with wood, and our only "plumbing" was an outhouse. My dad dug a 10-foot-deep hole down into the permafrost and covered it with an insulated cover. He put a ladder down into it and built shelves down there. That was our freezer during the summer months. I remember when we got our first generator. It was a 4-kW Witte. My mom was so happy. Of course we didn't call it "living off-grid" back then, it was just "living". Over a half century later I am still trying to get back to that simple way of life and I believe I will make it. Thanks for the memories. Peace.

Whatever you do, stay away from Haines, Alaska. The worst place I've ever lived, by far...and I grew up in south Philly.....in fact, I'd stay away from all of southeast Alaska and start off in the Anchorage area. Especially around Palmer and Wasilla. Alaska is NOTHING like the lower 48. Also, it's full of EXTREMIST Republicans, just FYI. Not the friendliest place I've ever lived, that's for damn sure. Lastly, be prepared for NONE of your friends to come see you more than once because travel to Alaska from the lower 48, SUCKS HARD!!!! If all you're after is life off the grid like in this video, for the love 9f God start out in the Anchorage area first, spend a few years there and become accustomed to the different world that Alaska is, THEN decide if this is what you want. I lived MANY years of my life across all of Alaska and to be perfectly honest, aside from not having the northern lights, you're WAY better off building off grid in one of the mountain states like Montana or Washington. I spent years after my Marine Corps tour was up, in Washington and boy oh boy was that a great place. Great mountains, plenty of off grid opportunities and best of all, always still close enough to hop in the car and go to the ocean or whatever floats your boat and several big airport opportunities for your friends to use when wanting to visit. Just my two cents.... good luck and I hope you find what you're looking for. Also, just remember, if you think you need to move to find happiness, you're not going to find it. You must be happy first then find a place you love to settle in. 🙏🖖✌

hey there Ron! Hello from Durango, CO. My Filipino wife ( a science teacher) and I live in the South Western Colorado mountains. She's always cold, haha. We're not off grid, but we enjoy the self sufficient life style of hunting elk, turkey, and deer, spending time cutting our own firewood, and we heat only with the wood stove to cut down on winter electric bills, and operating a saw mill so we can add onto the cabin as we want to. Green house will be complete soon. Got chickens and ducks, & 5 big dogs. haha. but the best thing is being away from people and the hustle bustle of city life! (mostly that is, we still have a few crazy neighbors, as one would expect living up in the hills)
