I appreciate the most Michael Lee's version in English, classic but strong, with a special "what you started, I didn't start it!" Nevertheless this version here is so fresh, so good.

I feel like this is probably the best ACTED Gethsemane I've ever seen, which is impressive given the fact that one of his hands is taken by a microphone! I think Drew really takes us for a ride here, hitting all the points of weariness, to questioning, to frustration, to anger, almost to terror, and finally back to this heartbreaking sadness. His gestures and use of his eyes are amazing. His choice to go to the floor and delivery on "where and how" gets me too. That's why I like it, at least!

I think this is so out of the ordinary because most Jesus's are much more content and Drew decides to play out the emotions to highest degree which, I think, embodies the song very well.

Wow, I totally adore him!! It's JCS "in concert" but he really breaks down on stage - even in concert. He doesn't play Jesus, he IS Jesus!! I love his interpretation of this very aggressive Jesus who struggles with his father and his mission! when I heared this song sung by Drew the first time I finally understood it - understood the fight Jesus was in during this situation / song, that he was afraid of death like any other human being and I really felt the desperation! Bravo, Drew!

I like how Drew approaches the song very in a very unapologetic manner; he's singing to God, but he comes off as seeming as though he sees himself as God's equal, which is good, considering the character he's portraying. At the same time, the emotion, passion, and anger in the song reveals his humanity, making Drew's Jesus a complex one. Honestly, I prefer Drew's Judas to his Jesus, but I think his interpretation of Jesus is interesting--maybe a bit arrogant for me at points, but interesting.

i like this because he doesn't follow the original, he puts his own syle on it which works better than most because it has emotion not just a guy following the band and singing about something than doesn't fit how they sound emotionally.

As much as I like and appreciate his great voice and technique, I really get quite annoyed by the fact that he keeps changing the melody, to the point where good part of the song doesn't have anything to do with the original score anymore. Just because you're able to do certain things, doesn't mean you have to do them. He should stick more to the score and keep the other stuff for his own, original projects. Taking liberties is a good thing and helps interpretation, but this is frankly way too much.

Been a fan of Drew Sarich for years and just now finding this performance of his. As always he does a great job. But this performance of Gethsemane is very unique. Technically in a lot of ways he makes mistakes, but they seem on purpose. He has a way he's rehearsed this song and has chosen to perform it and it deviates greatly from the norm, and I absolutely love that. What a great showcase of his vocal talent as well as his acting ability.

@MrVictorPhineas Training. He has worked very hard like every other vocalist to train his vocal mechanism to do exactly what he wants it to without creating any tension. The tension in ones voice is what causes strain, pain and in the end ruins the voice. So in the end it is his intense physical willpower, hours of training and the fact that he was born with such a magnificent vocal mechanism. All I am saying is you can't buy a sound like that. In the end it is God given.

not necessarily "better", but definitely a far more original take on the song. I like them both almost equally as much because they are so vastly different. It shows how two completely different actors and voices can slip into the role in their own way. That's part of what makes it such a good rock opera.

What I love about drew when he plays Jesus is he treats him like every normal person, he has feelings and cares for the people he is guiding but also is creating his own life whilst showing with way of God towards his followers. But Drew gives Jesus the only time to scream and let out his fears, because ultimately, he doesn’t want to die and is questioning his father’s word but why should he die if he sees no point to his death. He has come to his crossroads, he’s so sad here Jesus but drew plays him so aggressive that conveys that he’s scarier, to me anyway, than Judas and is filled with much more rage he just wants to know why should he give his life when he wants to be alive like every one else.

Amazing range and emotion! What a wonderful live rendition, but my go-to will always be Ted Neeley's original from the film. (Personal inflection is great here, but it is not what the composer(s) put on paper.) Hitting the notes is easy for some. Hitting the notes as written, is another story and level of skill all together. Drew is a brilliant singer non the less. I'll share this one.

"now listen, I remember when this whole thing began - no talk of god then whe called you our man and believe me, my admiration for you hasn't died but every word you say today, get's twisted round some other way, they'll hurt you when they think you've lied." taken from "heaven on theire minds". In my opinion this shows, that judas did care for jesus and therefore wanted him to don't attract attention as they will get harmed if jesus can't keep to his promises.

yeah but this guys interpretation is that Jesus is angry. The whole point of the musical is that Jesus was different to what people thought he was, the interpretation is that Jesus is questioning God, here the artists interpretation is that Jesus is angry because he has been chosen to die for our sins, even though he has tried his best. Other artists playing the part might have different versions?
@garlichotdog
@garlichotdog 16 жыл бұрын
Just because Sarich takes a different interpretation doesnt mean he needs acting lessons. Look at Sarich's other performances, In my opinion I think hes better than a lot of the Musical Theatre actors out there. You say that you do not think that anger is appropriate throughout the whole song, which is very valid. Look at the content of the song, Jesus is talking about his death which he doesnt understand, Id be angry. Anyways, Sarch isnt mad the whole time really (watch the end a bit closer).

well, judas isn't all that bad, he only had doubt in what jesus really aimed for "Listen Jesus, I don't like what I see and all I ask is that you listen to me and remember I've been your right hand man all along. Now you have set them all on fire, they think they've found a new messiah and they'll hate you when they find they're wrong"
@TheWildManEnkidu
@TheWildManEnkidu 15 жыл бұрын
i agree with what your saying, but the point of the musical is to show a more human Jesus, rather than the all knowing, meek son of God. He is human, he is afraid to die, hence the point of the song. I think this is a good portrayal of how Jesus would feel if he was more human rather than a messiah. But you are right.

Really? I thought his rage was pretty brilliant--nobody reads Jesus that way--he's always so weepy and pleading. Drew Sarich is the first actor to make me believe he was actually having a fight with God and not just begging for a way out. I don't see his anger in this clip as "easy" anger, but full-throated and well-earned.
