Hey guys! I made it all the way to the most remote state in India (Arunachal Pradesh) way up in the Northeastern part of the country. I came here with one goal: to meet the NOSE PLUG TRIBE and tell you their fascinating story.
Back in the day, the humble ladies of the Apatani tribe would plug their noses with thick pieces of bamboo to avoid getting kidnapped (by men from neighboring tribes). Then in 1975, the Indian government banned nose plugging, and today, there are less than 500 women remaining. You will get to know several of them in this 20-minute documentary.
I learned a lot about Northeast India while shooting this story, and I hope that you feel inspired by this incredible region. There is still plenty more of India to explore, as you will see in my next 2 videos!

The shaman at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="403">6:43</a> is from my Village. His name is Mudang Pai (you can see we have the same surname), he is one of the few remaining shamans in our tribe. There are lots of families who don't have a shaman anymore, and while performing any traditional rituals they will play the voice recording of the prayers/chantings. (As they don't have a priest anymore) Fun fact: Mudang Pai has played a role in a Bollywood movie "Bhediya" 1 more fun fact: While Aate(Brother) Pai is a priest for our traditional indigenous trbal religion, his wife is a Christian, but they live peacefully together. Both of them respecting each other's religion.

Being an North-East Indian, I always suggests foreigners and tourists to visit this region of India. Most of them stucked in Delhi, Mumbai and Rajastan and some of them travels to South India, but never to NE India. Do visit us, it's really beautiful.

My favorite musician from Arunachal Pradesh is Taba Chake. Also I am addicted to music of Mizoram in India. These are some of my favorite musicians from Mizoram: 1) Saiwanah 2) K Hminga 3) Kimkima 4) Mami Varte 5) C Sanga Mizoram has one of the best music industry in the world and nobody has even heard of it. Sangtei Khuptong's song Di Ruk Te is one of the best songs I heard in 2023/ Unfortunately, there is a section of tough backpackers who visit India and they are only interested in staying in hotels costing US$ 5 to US$ 15, eating street food and roaming around in street markets and slums. Then some of them have bad experiences and they say India sucks.

Fantastic video! It was so interesting to see a little bit of how these lovely people live. :) It does make me sad thiugh that the origin of the nose plugs for the women was to make themselves "ugly" to avoid kidnapping... it's very sad that the women were desperate enough to mutilate themselves so they could try to be safe. At least now it's something the ladies seem to be proud of.

I was born in INDIA in 1971 my father was in the ARMY over there my parents are white and so am I obviously but I left there when I was 2 ..So I haven't got no memories of that beautiful country and I've always wanted to go and visit and explore all of the Indian continent . But I just haven't had the time but now I'm getting older I can finally go "HOME" so to speak and travel around for a couple of months..🇳🇪

I appreciate drew for your work but the thing that irked me is the music playing in the bg very typical indian classical music but as this video is about Arunachal pradesh you should have choose music related to the tribe something representing the tribe as you are in a big platform, you have viewers worldwide and people barely know about our place, culture and KZbinrs like you is really a big deal for us so we do expect for better insight, coverage or more efforts from your side, although thank you for your visit hope you will come again soon!!

Hi Drew, I’ve been following a few of your channels for awhile now and I decided to subscribe. I absolutely loved it all these different places different tribes wherever you go you find something different. I used to go to Fiji a lot and I always bring food to the house bread e.g. butter, jam, tea, milk, powder, sugar rice Flour, Dahl, etc etc in the best thing of all you’re always have heaps of fun in the village. I’m a Christian and also a Pastor and always someone will bring a guitar up and praise and worship God and singing. Fantastic songs. Keep up the good work. Love your videos but this was so intriguing, breathtaking, fascinating..... I'm so at loss to describe how mesmerizing it was. This deserves an award for the research and time spent interacting with this little known tribe.... they do seem to be indigenous to before India or china were countries. It seems like they are a little of each, not just by looks but their culture and dialects. It would be interesting to see if the closest Chinese region to where they live, shares some of their traditions and culture.
