The story of the Hawaiian flag is quite Interesting. A British ship landed on the coast of Hawaii and gave the king of Hawaii a plain red flag with a British watermark. The king liked the flag and flew it outside his house until his advisers told him it would make people think that they were part of the British empire so he added some multi color strips and called it a day Edit:Wow didn't expect this many likes

The reason the King Kamehameha I of Hawaii added the stripes to the flag was that due to the British ensign, his kingdom could be mistaken as a British colony and be attacked by American troops (Note: This was during the War of 1812) He was worried his homeland would be turned into a battlefield. Therefore to prevent being mistaken as a British colony he decided to make a hybrid of the British and American flag. (Reasons why the Union Jack and Stripes are present on the flag)

The UK watermark is not just the top left, it is also the background colour. The flags derive from the ensigns of the Royal Navy which back in the day was divided in to 3 (or sort of 4) squadrons each with its own flag. The white squadron, red, and blue (and sort of a yellow (possibly unofficial)). Each flew a flag with the UK flag top left then the rest was the squadron colour. for much of the 19th century the white covered Europe and East Atlantic (aka Home Waters), red the Caribbean and west Atlantic and Blue the Indian and Pacific Oceans, hence why you find those background colours prevalent in those areas. There was however some overlap, and also earlier the squadrons were not so geographically defined, hence there are anomalies. Note these flags are still in use today but now represent: white the Navy, red merchant ships, blue the Naval Auxiliary (think Navy National Guard in US terms).
