Where I work, the lowest floor - the first floor - the ground floor - is labelled "lobby". The floor above that is the "ground floor", and then there's the second floor. But below the lobby, in the basement, is the "lower level", but the elevator from the lobby to the lower level just lists them as "1" and "2" respectively. So if you're upstairs and want to get to the first floor, which is technically at ground level, you hit "G", but if you want to go to the lobby you hit "L", but if you're at the lobby and you want to go even lower, you have to hit "1". A lot of people take the stairs.

1:32 a lot of times in like the north east youll have a building where its halfway in a hill so theres the 1st floor which is level with the top of the hill and the basement to that which is the ground floor and is level with the bottom of the the hill. This also works if the 1st connects to an overpass but that might be called a 2nd sometimes. And then sometimes like drew is saying ground floors can be just basements entirely below ground. Basically its all anarchy here in the states.

So in other words, a basement is a potential underground floor and a second floor is a potential ...second floor. I think this has demonstrated the main point. The ground floor is also a floor thus is the first one. An above ground floor is therefore the second floor. So, as an American at least, if someone said something was on the second floor and they meant the third story I'd be real confused.

G is always ground, as in ground level. Many buildings use G in the US but floors go G-2-3... rather than G-1-2... like in other countries. It's most often used when there are “negative” or basement floors, like B3-B2-B1-G-2-3-4… even though it would make more sense to do it the (European? IDK) way and use G as 0 in that case. When I went to Turkey I saw basement floors marked as negative numbers on the elevator, that was interesting. Sometimes (but not always) tall buildings don’t have a 13th floor marked (jumps straight from 12-14). I wonder if other countries with different number superstitions "jump" unlucky numbers as well.
