The Federal Government needed a way to get Michigan to stop fighting, so they promised to give Michigan the upper pennisula as compensation. Michigan took the deal because they realized if they didn't they would have a much harder time achieving statehood (at this time Ohio was a state, but Michigan was still a territory) as well as the fact that the upper pennisula was full of many natural resources.

Uhm... Greece is literally on the opposite side of Europe whereas France shares a border with Germany. Of course its going to take longer to invade. Shipping troops and supplies down there takes longer and is much more difficult. Not to mention that the Balkans are in between which were crawling with partisans. And have you ever seen Greece's geography? It's all mountainous and hard to traverse. The crazy thing is not that Greece held out longer than France, it's that Greece was ever captured.
