8:53 actually, for Sweden the winters practically only helped the Swedish against the Russians. Being able to use the snowfall to cover their charges, advances, and their generals using their faster armies to outmaneuver the Russians pretty easily. They were defeated mostly after their King (whose name I forgot) peered his head over a trenchline only to get shot.
@hejsanhass5565
@hejsanhass5565 2 жыл бұрын
That is mostly true for the first part of the war. It shifted when Charles the Twelfth invaded Russia. The winter/muddy spring slowed down the swedish army and it was weakend by starvation, sickness and harrasment from russian troops. This meant that the swedes were forced to take battle at Poltava when oppurtunity was given, even thought the Russians had more troops and were fortified. It is the largest military defeat in Swedish history and basically meant that the war was lost. However, Charles refused to see reason and continued the war even though Danmark once again joined the war and Russia were pilliging the Swedish coast. It was only when he was shot in that trench that the war could be ended. Resulting in Sweden losing livland (most of todays baltic countries) and starting the end of the Swedish empire.

@crimson1453
@crimson1453 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mirya_ne_Sero-Kizuru_han Most people have no clue about history. I see a lot of people in the US think the Spanish just arrived and started killing millions somehow. But truth be told it was diseases, and sadly no matter if it were the Spanish, British, Chinese, whoever as long as there was some type of prolonged contact the same thing was gonna happen. Then I also see a lot of ignorance for the actual conquests. First of all I see a lot of Mexican Americans especially take pride in the Aztecs as their "ancestors" and their culture before the bad Spaniards arrived and ruined it. But this completely ignores the fact that there were a ton of other tribes who HATED the Aztecs and allied and won the wars of the conquest with the Spanish against the Aztecs. It's also funny to hear it considering the Aztecs themselves were colonizers since they weren't native to the region and had only established themselves a couple centuries before the arrival of the Spanish. But then you also have the idea that the Spanish went to massacre, while it's true there were atrocities committed no doubt. The intention of the Spanish wasn't to massacre the Native population. Heck to this day here in Spain one of our noble houses (yes we still have nobles) is the descendant of the Moctezuma royal line. The tlaxcalans who were the biggest contributors to the conquests, and before the arrival of the Aztecs the strongest tribe in the region were all granted lower nobility titles and given the autonomy of leading their own regions. Later on the Aztecs and other tribes helped conquer the surrouding areas for what would become New Spain and later Mexico, the Southern US and Central America.

8:26 I'm really tired of that one. No one remembers that Thomas Jefferson spent his entire political career after the revolutionary war to abolish slavery in Virginia and it almost worked. It was heartbreakingly close 😔 He couldn't just free his slaves because Virginia law forbade that and had closed the loophole of an owner releasing them after the owner died because George Washington did just that. The founder's weren't perfect, but virtually none of them wanted to keep the institution of slavery.

Thomas Jefferson was our third-richest president adjusted for inflation, it seems pretty disingenuous to pretend he's some poor victim who was subjected to laws at the time. If he wanted to do it he could have found a way, it just would have put a dent in his wallet. Also pretty disingenuous to point out that society at the time had a vested interest in protecting slavery and then conclude that "virtually none" of the founding fathers wanted to keep it. So who was making the laws then? The Virginia legislature doesn't count as "founding fathers"?

@logitimate
@logitimate 2 жыл бұрын
The actual details. An American battalion succeeded during an assault while the units to both their right and left failed to make progress; as a result, they were surrounded by the enemy and attacked repeatedly. Two days into this, they began to be killed by an artillery barrage that was intended to *support* them, due to friendly forces being confused about where, *exactly*, they were. They released their last homing pigeon, Cher Ami, with a message reading "WE ARE ALONG THE ROAD PARALELL 276.4. OUR ARTILLERY IS DROPPING A BARRAGE DIRECTLY ON US. FOR HEAVENS SAKE STOP IT." Cher Ami was wounded by either a fragment from a shell-burst or a grazing blow from a rifle bullet (accounts vary); in either event, he fell to the ground, but subsequently managed to take flight again. He flew 25 miles back to headquarters in approximately half an hour, arriving blind in one eye, wounded in the breast, and with one leg - and the critical message capsule - dangling by a tendon, the muscle and bone having been completely cut through. Army veterinarians managed to stabilize him, he was officially awarded the Croix de Guerre, and he was sent back to America with a wooden leg. He ultimately died of his injuries a little over half a year later.

6:18 As a Brit, I always questioned this lol. People pretend England just magically popped up then started invading 1/3 of the world. In reality, early Britain was under constant invasion by the French and Vikings.

9:39 I don't think india industrialised under the British, some facts I found are - "Jeffrey G. Williamson argued that India went through a period of deindustrialization in the latter half of the 18th century as an indirect outcome of the collapse of the Mughal Empire, and that British rule later caused further deindustrialization"

That seems to be a simplified view tho The UK itself deindustrialised under Margaret Thatcher. Other countries to deindustrialise have been Germany, Japan, France, USA etc. pretty much the entire world. Britain had to be the ones to industrialise India because otherwise that means they coincidentally discovered industrialisation just after Britain and implemented it themselves even though the East India Company held power over India. The way your comment sounds as if India was industrialised before anyone else, but England and then the British Isles was the first to ever industrialise for about the first 30-40 years.

@@mr.waffentrager4400 the colonization of the Americas & Africa and their subsequent discovery of gold and diamonds were what brought such wealth of India and China down tho… they began measuring things differently too. Common misconception that it was all Britains fault but the United States, Japan, and Germany all arrived with larger industries (all these countries had deindustrialised too btw). Otherwise, Britains wealth would’ve risen, but between the beginning of the Raj and WW1 it plummeted from 37% to 7% of GDP world shares. China was also wrecked even harder than India by Britain yet they are richer than both India and Britain now.
