If you're thinking of taking up Architecture, think twice, maybe more. If you're really passionate about design, then go for it. If you just wanna take Architecture because you can't think of anything else and it sounds cool, then save yourself money, time, and effort and go find something else. Honestly, if you're not down to spend ALOT of all nighters in studio working on your projects and getting ripped apart by your studio crit, then it's not worth it. But if you really love designing and being innovative, then this thing is for you no matter how hard it is you'll still enjoy it. FYI. You don't need to be GOOD at math, but you need to have some knowledge. Also, you don't need to be a GOOD drawer. Everyone in architecture school has their own techniques of showing work, drawing is one of them. If you could talk about your project through digital stuff and photography, then do that, but in my opinion, drawing and sketching are some of the strongest methods of visual communication. Plus, you'll pick up drawing skills along the way - that's if you choose not to dropout ;) - Architecture student

First year it's mostly theoretical where you learn the basics of architecture and how to get design concept and develop it further. You'll also learn technical drawings and some maths. Second year it gets more technical and you have to learn how to conceive spaces and how to work with your design to meet the requirements depending on the brief. You'll also learn structures and building materials etc. You'll learn the history of architecture and how it developed and all the styles emerged in different eras. Then you have to practise everything you learnt. Theres a lot more to it but that's the basics. It's not impossible to study but you have to expect yourself to work ALOT. More than engineering or medicine or any degree. But you can do it!

Ok, now here goes my story, I’ll be a senior on August so I want to have a better idea of what I want to become. Since I’m a 7th grader, I thought that Architecture would be a good idea, i liked the way it sounded, how architects dress and mostly the important they are. I started low with the idea, then I thought that I wanted to be the best architect in all the American continent, I told my mom and she said, your dreams are to high, my dad also told me that I should be more humble and conform myself with less. I would get very upset about it, I wanted to prove them wrong, that i am capable of becoming whatever I want. Last year I did research about the salary of architects, architect experience and more, I was very disappointed to be honest, I really couldn’t understand that despite all the years in college you would invest more than the money that you would actually make. Then I divided that I wanted to talk with a real architect, to one that actually owns a company. Today I have three months in USA, my parent are in Mexico, I decided to come because I want more opportunities for myself and, I still don’t know what I actually want to do, I always thought about architect as an option without really knowing what they do, now that I have a better idea, I’m not so sure about it. I really want to be very happy with anything I do, for me, I don’t think it’s worth it if you have to be unhappy like for 5 years, I’d rather be happy all the days of my life, what’s the point of doing something that you don’t enjoy? I know that things have their sacrifice, but why not doing it for something that you enjoy? I wouldn’t like to go for architecture and be stressed and depressed 24/7, without having time for me, go out with friends, go to new places, go to the gym, do yoga, sports or some other hobby, I want to be happy and enjoy life, I really want to travel, meet new people, have new experiences, be the best in whatever I want to do! But I would also have to work part time, an other thing I need are scholarships of something to help me because I’m not with my parents, I want to make everything I do worth it, I don’t want to disappoint my parents and I don’t want to disappoint myself. The month and a half that I went here for my junior year I was struggling, back in Mexico everything is different, the main difference is the schedule, I know how to speak English because I’m originally from here, but my parents are Mexican and we moved to Mexico when I was 9 years old. Since not all my transfer grades transferred as they should of, next year I’ll have 7 classes, and I have my fist SAT on August 24th. I still have a long, very long story but I will get to the point. What advice would you give to me? What can I do if I’m not sure what I want to do? I consider my self a very social person, I can talk with people of all ages, how can I discover what I want to do? I really don’t want to be unhappy? Do you think I can link business with architecture? An other thing that I’m sure of is that I want to be a recognized person. I really hope you can replay, I would be very thankful.

I definitely do it for the love of it and not for money, and you need it in this field because they will be days, especially after being crushed after a crit you'd wonder why you still doing this but the love of architecture will bring you back stronger and much more confident.

You should check the school you plan on attending for the classes required for the degree. They should have it on their website if you look deep enough. But in the profession we have to do a lot of LOGICAL thinking about how the building will go together and the drawings. That's different than running equations all day. And there will be some days when you have to calculate some stuff...but if you plan on doing any kind of business ever you will have to calculate your money-in money-out and track your hours if nothing else.

Hey Paul. Great Videos btw. im a 20 year old university dropout. i went to university in Canada for a degree in automotive engineering right out of High School. I went through my first year and it was ok, failed and dropped some little courses but did them again with decent marks and went to the 2nd year. thats when i started getting lazy, slacking off in studying maybe i was loosing full interest in it or somethng. idk. but i messed up and 2nd year went by in dropping and failing courses and i went in probation and decided to give it another shot by taking some easy courses, but that didnt workout either. So as of now i have decided to take sometime off, get a job and decide on what to do. Architecture always seemed interesting to me but i never really payed much attention to it till now. i was and am always passionate about design. every single thing i see with my eyes, i always pay attention to its design, how its designed how it could have improved or be different or what not, may it be a house, a building, cars, furniture, u name it. i could imagine alot of designs and always wished i could put it on paper but i was never a good drawer. since i was little, i did used to draw cars, (like only 1 dimensional design) and i still draw it now. the detailing of it has improved but i was never good at drawing 3d. i had really good marks in art in highschool and design class in engineering because of what i had designed (which was a computer table) but it never got me anywhere. but in general i love designing. i do feel like i have wasted my last 2.5 years but i wanna make it up for it and am thinking of getting a degree in architecture. and when you talk about math, i wasnt always best at it but im not bad at it either. in university, i didnt get good marks but got passing grades and didnt fail it. i know its me who should answer my own question and know if this is a good path for me but i wanted to know from someone like you and get a good opinion. Thnx

I'm really good at drawing, designing, and for the most part, I'm decent at math. but I'm really nervous about the workload. does it get really overwhelming when you have projects assigned at the same time as you have work for other core classes? is there time at all for a social life? how much time would you say you spend on average working on your projects? Listen, it is perfectly normal to be hesitant or scared about pursuing an architecture major. Hell, I'm in my 3rd year and still want to quit after all-nighters and huge, tedious projects. But, no one is going to have their life planned out. No one expects you to know exactly what you want to do. Life is about trying new things and learning and growing as a result. Try architecture out and stop letting the advice of people online in threads, comment sections, or forums make decisions for you. They could've absolutely hated architecture, but the other guy could've absolutely loved it; you might be the other guy. Give it a shot, life is short!

I'm a sophomore and I am taking geometry, and I really want to be a architect when I grow up, but I'm not doing good in geometry. architecture deals with a lot of geometry obviously. Should I be worried? Do I still have a chance at being an architect even if I'm getting D's in geometry?
@johnpark4650
@johnpark4650 8 жыл бұрын
It depends, because somophore geometry is slightly different from architecture geometry class (with less number calculations but with more studies on forms themselves) and there are several other aspects of architecture you can excel to make up for (like theory, structure, physics, etc). All the same I recommend you to grasp the basics of geometry. They are pretty useful, if not important, when it comes to designing buildings, and architecture schools will still give you geometry exams at one point of your college life.

+Sergio martinez I don't know what you mean by saying you're "not good at geometry," exactly. Do you struggle to think about shapes and imagine things spatially? Legos, Minecraft, and Sims would be good choices. Maybe encourage him to take art classes, whether that’s electives in school or lessons on the side. And a good architect always has a sketch book - just having a space to draw when you need it is good to have. And everyone’s different, but personally I think it would have been cool if there had been a few architecture books lying around the house when I was growing up. Nothing too dense, but just a few coffee table books.

I don’t think being in a wheelchair is a good excuse to give up on your dream of becoming an architect. Architecture is a desk job. You may go on site visits once in a while, but being in a wheelchair won’t hold you back unless you let it. Look up the work Michael Graves did from a wheelchair. I generally don’t like his design style, but I respect him as a successful architect. Maybe you could find some inspiration by looking into his story.

Computer science would be smart. In architecture we are starting to use coding to do some of our work (producing drawings, schedules, itemizing and automating drawing sets) and they don’t necessarily teach you that in architecture school. Computer science would be helpful but not mandatory. Other than that, art classes would be really beneficial.

harder than civil engineering or computer science?
@DrewPaulBell
@DrewPaulBell 8 жыл бұрын
+Fung I don't know. I didn't do those things... I imagine it would depend on what you are good at already, and what you are the most excited about. For example, I took an accounting class in college, and objectively it was not difficult, but I really hated accounting, so it was difficult for me in a way, even though I'm more than capable of doing that stuff. I really enjoyed architecture, so even when it was hard, it was easy to motivate myself to work at it and get it done. For someone who really struggles with math, architecture would be way easier than civil engineering. But architecture majors have to answer the open-ended question "what are we going to do?" and engineering majors have to answer the yes/no question of "is this going to work?" This example may be an over-simplification, but my point is that creating something new is a multi-dimensional challenge and very different from analysis. A lot of computer scientists are creating apps, video games, and websites, and a lot of civil engineers are actually creating infrastructures. I don't know enough to compare professions, but I know making things is harder than verifying things, whatever profession you're in.

let's say I got a U.S state certificate in B.arch and I decided to work abroad in Saudi-Arabia. They accept my certificate, right ?

Roy Francis No. Licenses are regulated by individual governing bodies. You might be able to apply in Saudi-Arabia for a license, and some jurisdictions may say that since you have a license in another country, they will let you get one in theirs. But you would have the check individually with the particular place you want to go. I've done a video on the way this works in the US: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2SYhYV5h9Rlf68 Even within the U.S., if you have a license in New York State, you have to jump through hoops to get a license in California.
