I’ve been lifting weights / building muscle for 18 years and the last 2 years I have been using resistance bands only, and have put more muscle on in the last 2 years than I did in the previous 17. I don’t have Dr Jacquish’s equipment but use something similar (a bar, resistance bands and a base plate). I used to do up to 2 hours per workout lifting conventional weights but now I spend no more than 30 minutes, one set per body part. I’m far stronger now than I was. So to all the haters, try it before you knock it.

John is a real PhD. Meaning Piled high and Deep in BS. It's shocking how much nonsense this guy can spew with no push back. I can only think the reason she didn't push back is because the things he was saying was so embarrassing that she just wanted the interview to end. The guy actually said in 20 years of weightlifting he only put on a pound of muscle. As a retired strength and conditioning coach who worked with Division 1 athletes, I can assure you everything this guy is saying is an absolute lie and he's just trying to sell his products. DO NOT STOP TRAINING WITH WEIGHTS!! “stupid people. “”Dog in heat” is this how a reputable PhD conveys their ideas?

I was recently diagnosed with severe osteoporosis, and, really uncomfortable with the pharmaceuticals that are being pushed on me, I've been looking to see how else I can support bone strength/health/suppleness. I actually had an appointment tomorrow to check out his technology, but after listening to the COMPLETE, unexpurgated, entirely unedited 2-hour+ interview this is excerpted from, I was so shocked at the lack of professionalism and variety of dissimilations he threw out that I've canceled my appointment.

I agree that he can come across kind of like a jerk, and maybe he is? Never meet him. I’m also not a fan on some of his dismissals about people who wear a mask… But I will say that his X.3 product is very high-quality and I love it. Can’t speak to whether or not it would ever replace weights but I do like his products.

I agree 100 % weight training is the only way to build strength. When you get strong you're automatically building muscle.The rest is what's on your menu. It's a tried and true process.

I can put on 25 pounds of lean muscle in less than 3 months, weight lifting. I've done it around five different times thru my years.

I think this guy just called me stupid. At 65, on an extremely restricted diet, due to complications from a full jaw replacement, I gained 25 pounds of muscle in 6 months. My RHR and vo2max are now athletic level for my age. And I can complete an ultramarathon with minimal preparation. ZERO steroids, diet gimmicks, special equipment, etc. Just basic science, hard work, and determination to be a role model for our unhealthy senior population. I agree with most viewer comments here. He was not a good guest. Some people at the gym aren't the most intellectual individuals. And some may have an inflated ego, or be overly vain. But the only stupid ones are those who pump garbage in their body to look good. If you are at the gym, and at least making an effort. I would never call you stupid. I suggest the next guest be someone who makes your subscribers feel good about themselves. Not question their intelligence.

I asked because when you mentioned the jaw replacement, I had wondered if you had experienced jaw necrosis as a result of osteoporosis medication side effects. sounds like what you had was even worse than that. I'm so sorry that you lost your beloved partner. And I'm so grateful that you've got your life. You have inspired me today. I am a couple years younger than you are and dealing with some very significant degenerative illnesses along with the osteoporosis and just trying to find my path. Thanks for helping give a light. Best wishes to you.

@@tannsoloThanks, I wish you well in dealing with your health issues. Glad you saw my reply before I deleted it. I don't think I could have accomplished what I did, without the tragedies in my life. The obstacles were actually an advantage. I try not to dwell on them much. I'd like to stay positive going forward. Incidentally, that jaw replacement bone, was taken from my scapula. So I have numbness in my jaw and other areas,.More importantly, a skeletal imbalance, and stability issues when lifting. I replace higher weight, with increased repetitions, and intensity.

I read his book. There is real research involved and my personal experience is that using resistance bands as he recommends really works. He’s only saying weight lifting is a waste of time because he’s promoting training with resistance bands, because it’s safer for the human body and more effective at building muscles quickly.

Nobody can put on no 25 pounds of muscle in 6 months at any age without steroids. 25 pounds in a year maybe if your training is on point, bulking the whole year, you have good genetics and below 40. Maybe you put on 25 pounds but most of that was fat and water weight but no way that much muscle.

My story. Started resistance training for the first time at 70. I weighed 148. I was losing lean muscle mass for sure. I started working with 20-25 dumbells and different resistance bands for one year including one mile on a treadmill, (20 min) from home, for a total of 90 minutes every other day. Faithfully! I started drinking a quality protein shake after every workout mixed with creatine. After one year I now weigh 162 and I can assure you that 100% of my weight gained is muscle. In closing, I look more cut at 71 than when I was 30. I feel GREAT and extremely confident that my decision to take action has delayed the ravages of aging. Total cost of equipment less than $100.00. All things are possible!

From what I understand, this guy got his Degree online, originally built his muscles using traditional methods and seems to be on a heavy doses of Testosterone.He also doesn’t seem to have any idea about biomechanics in terms of resistance training. No, bands are not optimal in any way shape or form. In fact the resistance curve of bands is the complete opposite to the strength potential of the muscles ie. muscles have more strength potential in the stretched position

Let me spoil this for everybody… It all works… Everything works, a mixture of many different things works. It’s just a matter of how much you use them when you use them and how you mix them up. Genetics and nutrition matter, but almost everything has a time and place.

100% right. That’s why it’s so confusing in the fitness industry. Everything works and nothing works at the same time. You have to find the truth somewhere in the middle and actually put things to the test.

@@lorenwest6305 Right. What I really mean is everything can work to one degree or another and has its place at a given time or another. There’s just a lot of other factors that would dictate what you choose and when. Bands work. Weights work. Bands and weights together work. Chains work. Body weight works. Something can work amazingly well, but if you’re on the same exact program 5 years later, you’re probably doing yourself a disservice.

I agree. However, I would say that there isn't enough attention given to mindsets behind the physical requirements. You can try everything out there. But if you don't have the mental focus to execute any of it properly. You never discover what's best for you. I created my own routine, based on varied research, and feel, during workouts. If I had adhered to what most trainers preach, I would never be performing as well as I am. I would have placed limitations on my peak performance. For example, most of the industry says it's dangerous, or not possible to maintain zone 5 cardio for more than a minute or so. I have some workouts where I maintain it for an hour continuously. I built that endurance up with a mindset, that is all about pinpoint focus, symmetry in movement, efficiency, and absolute control of the activity. I intend to "bully" that treadmill every time. It would be difficult for me to teach the mechanics, or routine I used. Because it is so varied, and instinctive. However, the mindset part might be easier, if you had a truly serious student. Most people want to achieve athletic level. But in my opinion, most don't, because they expect others to provide the game plan. The first thing would be to find the mindset that truly motivated you. Then use a combination of routines, in conjunction with what you feel comfortable with. We need to look at ourselves first. Then we can incorporate what others teach.

I'm 65 and started lifting at 14. I competed in Olympic and Powerlifting from 16 to 21 years old....won states and placed in New England and Teenage Nationals. I kept lifting through most of my life, though not as intensely. I also ran 3 marathons and many other shorter races. I started cycling at 50 to ease my arthritic feet. My point is that I've remained healthy, strong and energetic because of it. This guy's video's talk a lot about putting on muscle weight. For me, that is NOT the point (I competed at 123 and 132 lb weight classes and weight 137 now) Weights DO make a difference (check all the comments from older viewers on this video) and they have kept my body from aging as quickly as many of my friends.

I'll keep myself open to any train of thought. But as a 67 year old who just started weight training about 5 years ago, I can tell you that with fairly traditional static weight training, I've put on about 25 lbs of muscle. I wasn't that weak to start out with, but my deadlift doubled (from abt 200 to 400 lbs), squats and bench presses went up well over 50% during that time. I'm experimenting now with BFR, so I'm pretty open. But the blanket statement that static weight training doesn't put on muscle doesn't seem correct to me.

@@StarvingMyselfToLIFEThe answer to this question is obvious. Getting stronger makes you healthier. You feel better, life is easier, and you have an overall better sense of wellbeing. The old saying is true, add years to your life, and life to your years through exercise.

The point was missed. Exercise is simply keeping the body in motion. Building muscle is different. Do bigger muscles equate to greater overall health? Doesn't seem like body builders are at any less risk for disease as non body builders.

I have just recently started watching a few of your videos. I am having a hard time understanding why you would have this person on. You seem to be a reasonably smart person. tldr: resistance training aka as time under training is what they are talking about. Medium Weights, long reps, like 5s rep x 15-20 reps to reach faster Hypertrophy. You no longer need to push 100kg+ for chests when you can destroy the fibers with 50-60% of your max 1 rep.

@@franciscrocombe looks like i did a typo. Time Under Tension. Lower Weights is different for each of us. 20 reps, 5s each rep. You should not be happy at the end of the weight. Start low and add some kgs each until you will fill sore at the end of the sets.

In my opinion, Dr. John Jaquish is wrong, lifting weights is not a wast of time. However there are people in the "history of physical culture", that got in great shape with a set of 5 pound dumbbells and a good chest pull. And the right diet for them. I think the legendary George Hackensmit would not agree. Who's theory is to lift weights in "progression". Thank you Dr. John Jaquish for showing what you don't know!

He's clearly jacked up on HRT and a flat out liar if he says otherwise. I'm not opposed to resistance bands and/or any form of resistance training that may work for someone, but until someone promoting a products or form of exercise for results outlines in full (honest) detail there nutrition, workout program, supplementation (with or without Rx's or peptides), then it's misleading at best.

I stated bodybuilding at age 14 i weighed 55kg I competed in the teenage nationals at age 17 my body fat was around 6%. and i weighed 91kg the day of the show.Weight training only builds muscle if your diet is right.The people that never change are the ones who dont eat the right amount of protein and calories.

You can build muscle as long as your protein needs are met along with other parameters. Yo say it only works with a good diet is absolutely wrong

@@K_j_M Depends what your definition of a good or bad diet is. You can build muscle eating enough protein as well as junk food 6 times a day however you will build plenty of fat as well in most cases. I was speaking from a bodybuilders perspective obviously different sports would use different diets and different ratios of protein carbs and fats. Im 49 and i have been bodybuilding since i was 14.I have been around and trained with many top level pro's and amateurs and we all pretty much do the same thing when it comes to diet. Im not a Dr however i have roughly 35 years of experience in this field so i definetly know what works a what doesn't work.

He strikes me as a timeshare salesman or a MLM guy who succeeds through sheer force of his commitment to tell people they are wrong/stupid. If you call him a snake oil salesman, he leans in and becomes MORE engaged. If you don’t turn, you “just don’t get it”. Guys like this require the oxygen of attention to survive. Stop giving it to him. Ignoring him is the antidote. As an aside, I am a NASM Master Trainer. I started my career working in an 100% Nautilus gym, so I know all about variable resistance/cam training. He has taken bits of pieces of lots of things and made a BS casserole.

Six minutes to even mention the answer to the title of this video, Variable Resistance Training. What is that? Rename this video, One Thing That Doesn't Work to Build Muscle. I've learned so much from Dr. Lyon's KZbin, but this interview was a waste of time.

I started weight lifting as a 90 pound teen and am a muscular 195, still at age 52. Nothing out of the ordinary with my average genetics. I guess if I had used bands I would have weighed 295. Darn!

I'm pretty happy with my kettlebell and heavy club momentum exercises, which are improving my core strength. I've mostly stopped doing weight lifting, although there are some exercises I continue with weights for connective tissue therapy.

@@TheBlueskyson Yes, I do a variety of classic movements with both kettlebells and heavy clubs. I follow Mark Wildman of Wildman Athletics for guidance. Compound dynamic movements are better for whole body and core strength and not very useful for sculpting.

It works for everybody every time. Everybody at my SS gym, man or woman, has put on way more than a pound of muscle in a short amount of time and gotten stronger. The weight on the bar doesn’t lie.

Enjoy Gabriel's channel, but this is a poor guest and episode, much of what this guy is saying is complete rubbish and goes against much of the evidence and common sense. The reason that no one else is doing and saying what he is, is because it is rubbish. He should have been challenged on what he was saying. Though I'm sure his response will be those studies are biased or those people are stupid. The arrogance of the guy is amazing.

I put on close to 25 pounds of muscle in my 40's from lifting weights. It took me a few years, but weight training combined with proper nutrition definitely works. The key for me was compound lifts like squats, bench press, rows, etc.

I like the X3 system , however it's an addition not the only thing I'd use. In Canada I can have access to a whole gym for a year for the same money and that includes massage chairs, BMI machines plus everything else. It has it's place though.

Yes, he is. This is old science recycled in a new way he is pretending to discover. Item of note, Nautilus through Arthur Jones and pushed by Mike Mentzer came out in the early/mid 1970s. You know who were great bodybuilders during that time who didn’t use it for training? Schwarzenegger, Ferrigno, Columbo, Platz, Robinson, Olivia, etc etc etc. Maybe he should get a Time Machine and go back to 1975 and tell all of them that what they are using to train isn’t working.😂

The best, most productive system of exercise is the one you can stick with and that will be the one you enjoy. I look at the X3, working out alone and at home...boring. I'm sure it works for those that like it and stick with it. So does my routine in the gym lifting weights. Why? Because I enjoy the gym and like lifting weights. He has a decent sales pitch for the uniformed.

There is a video on KZbin where a German sports trainer did some research and said that he got his degree from a diploma mill. I have no idea if it is true. But, that is what the KZbinr said. I would like to see what school he actually went. Also, tell all the millions of body builders around the world who have built up their muscles and strength that weight lifting is a waste of time. I think not.

I'd have thought any form of exercise or resistance training is good - doesn't matter if its bands, weights or body weight (sure, might to be more specific at advanced level). Not saying bands are bad (I use them myself for some exercises) but saying the other stuff doesn't work is obviously nonsense.

Writing a book called "Weightlifting is a Complete Waste Of Time" is a click bait title that opens up a very large can of worms. So, apparently what he is saying is that the Champion's like Sandow, Charles Atlas, Vince Gironda, Dave Draper, Steve Reeves, John Grimick, Frank Zane, Bill Pearl, Brad Harris, Gordon Scott, and quite a few other's wasted their time in the weight room? And would have made their strength and fitness goals, including for some, bodybuilding contests and titles, using rubber bands? That is laughable. And besides how laughable it is, the claim that "weightlifting is a complete waste of time" HE HAS NEVER PROVED THAT! And the claim runs against a whole history of bodybuilding and physician culture. Oh, and by the way, the people I mentioned were not on TRT.

I really like Gabrielle and have followed her for years. However, I didn't understand what John was trying to say - it made little sense. I have coached for years and as someone who trains hybrid - style lifting is key for strength, performance and longevity. Just listen to Peter Attia 🙂

I feel bands can help as an adjuvant to weights. Especially for burnout sets. I feel his product is good quality but over priced. Saying weights are a waste of time is a poor marketing strategy. Even if it were totally true. I’ve added bands recently and they are effective. They can also be useful for rehabilitation of injuries.

I've been using the X3 for over 3 mo. now. It's a great system. It works the full body to failure without joint pain or stiffness. If done right with slow motions, the muscles will feel heavy post workout. Highly recommend it for anyone, especially older people who can no longer do weight training.

I have an X3 bar and it got me into the best shape of my life faster than anything else by far. I followed many training programs, college lifting programs, bodybuilding and powerlifting programs and nothing worked like X3. I also take it on vacation and can work out in a few minutes, and go back to the gym just as strong under the bar as I was prior. Say what you want but it works for many people

I appreciate Dr Lyon & I use the X3 system. That said, in this short outtake video, Jacquish didn't do a great job in explaining his approach, why/how it works, and didn't say anything at all about his dietary approach which is basically keto/IF. He would do better to deliver a clear, positive message, rather than just trash free weight lifting. People judging resistance band training based on most of the bands you can buy are using a straw man. X3 bands, the bar, and platform, allow for a serious amount of resistance, which most of the others don't.

Actually, the idea of variable resistance training is well implemented by Arthur Jones and his Nautilus machines. Probably much better than rubber bands. Although not as portable. Personally, I think rubber bands are clumpsy, except for warm-up.

@@larsnystrom6698 you make a very good point about the Nautilus system. The cam is designed to solve one of the same key issues that the x3 system is dealing with, which is the initiation of the movement at the weakest point of your muscle & tendon strength. The cam is designed to lighten the load at that point, but after that, it's a constant preselected weight. The X3 system is continuously variable which admittedly is more a function of the system itself than of your muscle strength curve, although a fair approximation. Both are compromises. But talking about "rubber bands" and the X3 system is apples and oranges, or at least Fujis & Pippins. With the bar and base plate, the X3 system is solid & consistent & well-designed & can be used in a disciplined program. It's not "clumsy", though, I'd agree, typical cheap bands, with or without handles, are. I used Nautilus machines for years & like them a lot, but had to quit several, as the adjustments available weren't sufficient to tailor to my body and I had some injuries using them. I haven't had that issue with X3, though some very tall guys wanted (& got) a wider bar. I'm 6'1" & have no problem with the system as-is. YMMV.
